Tanks are only as good as their operators. If they are used poorly, committed to urban areas without screening infantry, poorly maintained, and not properly supported by logistics system, they are going to suffer. People have been making this claim since WW1 and its always user error to blame for poor performance and not a sign that the tank is obsolete. The Chieftain talked about this recently in a video he did about Ukraine. A tank must be part of a combined arms approach in order for it to perform well.
Finally, a video on this topic without politicizing, or degrading anyone. Good analysis for people who like this kind of stuff and not just one more propaganda piece, it's becoming tiring nowadays I just wanna watch a video about tanks and to listen: they are stupid, and we are smart rhetoric over and over again. So thank you for this video you made my day.
@@ArmourgeddonTanks sorry but i must say something. You so easily say Sadam army, no. I would think ranks will be around for many years to come, one thing thst may stop them is the use of drones, plus of course choppers when tank crews are fighting with hatches down.
The main problem, in my opinion, is the design. The tanks used in ukraine are moslty from the cold war era, and they're mostly made to fight other tanks and most defenses are made to defend against fire from other tanks, artillery, and guided missiles. Drones aren't capable of being made very powerfull, old antiarticraft guns and ordinary machine guns are more than capable of bringing down drones, and I do not doubt that a good point-defense system would be capable of bringing down drones, but modern tanks don't have the required systems to battle against those threat. I don't think vehicles that fufill the role of tans will stop beings used but a SERIOUS reconsideration in their design will have to be made. We're clearly entering a new era of warfare with more Artifical intelligence and electronics and only time will truly tell what will occur.
@ChupacabraRex The terrifying thing about drones is that by the time they're detected, it's often too late. They tend to be small fast and not very loud, packed with enough explosives that they can do a lot of damage. The thing about that that's even more frightening is that these drones are off the shelf reasonably cheap, and gangs can obtain explosives fairly easily. The technology isn't too far advanced for a gang member to set the whole thing up to give to his brothers to use against others. Tanks are going to need a way of mitigating this threat, they need to be able to detect them and pass that information to other units.
@@williambuchanan77 That's something which merits use of things such as Radar and Artifical intelligence, not modern senses of which tanks often lack. Modern(or not so modern, a vast number of coldwar Era tanks are still used) aren't exactly made to deal with things like that; they're primarily designed to defeat enemy Infantry, enemy tanks, and rockets. But drones mean that you cane be much, much farther and even the most expensive drones will succesfully damage a tank. Of course, the tactics used at urkaine didn't help but tanks seriously need defense against aerial targets. Speed, armor, and the power a gun has are important, but the ability to quickly locate and inform about enemy targets in order to destroy them are neccesary. I don't think tanks will become obsolete in and of themselves; but all this needs to be accounted for. Cold War era and Modern tanks will need to get a serious overhaul with new technology is they are to be of any use in this incoming era, otherwise they are as obsolete as a world War One Tank is at fighting a soviet era army. Ukraine should be proving that a new era of war is upon us, and adaptacions need to be made.
Bombs are cheap, rockets are cheap, artillery Antitank shells are cheap ,etc ,etc. Just because a weapon can kill a unit doesnt make the unit useless. For example you will never ever replaced infantry
@@laisphinto6372 rockets aren't cheap. Tank units will have to find a way to deal with cheap drones that isn't too expensive or those little drones will be used to make it too expensive to keep that tank unit on the field. It's possible to win a war by making your opponent spend so much money they have to surrender due to bankruptcy.
Yes, but only if they evolve, in their current state their use is highly limited as we're seeing a surge of cheap disposable ways to neutralize them, they haven't been able to keep up with modern advancements, i think a tank would be the last place i would be in a hot zone.
Tanks are still being used very effectively by both Ukraine and Russia. They're very useful for supporting infantry attacks against fortified positions.
simply but, no the tank is far from outdated. It is still of the most lethal assets on the modern battlefield when employed correctly. Russia simply does not understand this.
4:16, it seems like Russia is doing its damndest to prove your point wrong. What's the tank's job in the Ukraine theater? It's to guide the APCs to the enemy lines. Are they able to do that consistently? No, because they cannot handle minefields or artillery well enough. This observation seems to outline roughly at tanks will evolve into. They should be able to primarily handle mines and navigate mine fields while reporting a safe path to their column. They then should be remote controlled, have some anti-infantry ability, have some anti-tank ability, and be fairly expendable. I'm envisioning effectively an advanced landmine roller with enough armor to be able to take a few indirect artillery hits. The roller portion would be segmented and any segment could be replicable. The vehicle that drives the roller could also be detached and replaced quickly. It would perhaps have a 50 caliber turret and a small anti-tank battery. But it'd primarily be an armored gas can built around an engine with treads.
Tanks remind me of knights in armor, great until the gun arrived. With missiles and drones becoming more advance, tanks are slowly becoming obsolete. Tanks I think will be replaced by drone tanks or AI controlled drone tanks. Or, we'll just shoot each other with long range missiles and drones.
A gun can take out infantry, does that make infantry obsolete? As long as nothing else can fill the niche of the tank better than the tank, it doesn't matter how easily one can be destroyed.
@@andrerobertson3151 It does matter if it gets destroyed too quickly it can't fill the role. Infantry is hard to be killed with a gun it is 100k shots per casualty.

What do you think? Are tanks obsolete in modern war? Comment what you think
Obsolete? mmmh No 🧐🤔
Why say "UAV's and drones?" They're the same thing. It's like saying "automobiles and cars."
Until we have something that can absorb small arms fire and has the firepower to destroy anything on the battlefield we'll still need the tank
Exactly! They definitely have a use still
Interesting lecture sir ,think you need a mk iv in your collection sadly my gonna happen though. Nice to see my T55 again 😂😂
Hopefully one day we will get one!

People will see the attrition rate of tanks and call them obsolete but just wait until they see how many tanks were lost in WW2.
Dont let them See infantry death counts , they want to replaced "useless" squishy infantry immiedatly
the fact is an armored gun wont go out of style
