- Demonstrators at the University of Chicago were given a final notice to leave their encampment on campus which was established to protest the war in Gaza. The journalists involved here should be very proud of themselves for going right to where it's happening, reporting what's actually happening on the ground, and allowing the protestor's side of the story to be told, not just the police's and/or university administration's.

This is why we are fighting. For peace, for the liberation of everyone, for children to stop dying. For no more apartheid and no more fascism. We are non-violent and yet we are being harassed, assaulted, defamed, stalked. We are the empathetic side. You cannot be empathetic and watch as children’s bodies are crushed and as old men carry the broken bodies of their grandchildren in grocery bags. There is a reason why educated people are the ones leading this movement, education has been proven to increase empathy, and we have been taught to explore and understand genocides. I toured Auschwitz and spoken to multiple Holocaust survivors and I’ve spoken to Laura Lane who was there during the Rwandan genocide. We know genocide, and we know the patterns. We must prevail. There is a reason the BDS campaign uses focussed, organised tactics and targets specific companies. Because it's much more tactical and effective. @@OhioVworld The University of Chicago has nothing to do with that - what sense would it make to protest it? There is no material effect that such a protest could have. It is the same reason they are not protesting against Hamas - the university does not support them, and Oct7 already happened and cannot be undone. The current violence - paid for by our tax dollars - can be stopped, however, and evidently the student movements are pressuring Biden who has at least felt the need to pretend to answer to it.

Chris' remarks are at once self-aware (3:16) and selfless (2:21, 3:10). Contrast this with Paul Alivisatos, who right after having peaceful dissenters ambushed in their sleep, rushed off to the Wall Street Journal to publish a self-congratulatory and shockingly dishonest op-ed (read it for yourself and let me know if you want support for my claim that it's dishonest). Thank God that there are decent people like Chris in the world, even if it's the self-serving, anti-transparency, serial liars who tend to make it to the top. As a fellow UChicago student, I know Chris to be eminently decent in how he treats people in day to day life, and I commend the reporter for giving wings to his call for transparency and humanity.
Demonstration is the right of students and reflects a democratic society and brutalizing them does not reflect any society. Rather it reflects support for Israel's brutal actions. We condemn this action. And if you think anything related to this encampment is intrinsically antisemitic, I would suggest you read the Chicago Sun-Times article interviewing the dozens of Jewish students involved about why their faith led them to support its cause and participate in the demonstrations. I think the more antisemitic perspective is to deny that one might be led to this cause not by hatred, but by Jewish ethics and law.
