  • Hyrule Castle, the finale of the game, is a climactic dungeon that brings closure to the game's plot lines. There's a real sense of rising tension, and a four phase final boss fight!
But is it actually a good dungeon? Let's take a look.

Fun fact many people don't know but Zelda's aim during the horseback section of the Ganon fight is actually directly controlled by the player. Her aim follows your joystick. That's not to say it's well done because the vast majority of the playerbase don't ever figure this out but it's a useful fact to know for replays.

One thing I like about the Dark Beast Ganon fight that you didn't mention is that it brings back a goat mechanic! At the beginning of the game, a goat gets loose from Orson farm. You get the chance to stop it by grabbing it's horns and throwing it to the side, the exact same way you do with Ganon! It ties into Link being a farmhand, and I just like the little details

I actually really enjoyed the dark beast ganon music and I think I get what they were going for. The chanting and almost tribal magic feel to it always reminded me of music from horror films about demonic possession. He had just possessed Zelda and then the “demon” was unveiled as dark beast ganon. The music really captures the feeling of battling something that came straight from Hell.

Fun little tidbit: at the E3 2005 Twilight Princess booth, there was a screen in the shape of one of the windows in Zelda's tower. It game trailer from back then would loop on it, but occasionally it would show a scene as if from Zelda's perspective of Link fighting his way across a gated bridge to the castle. I'm pretty sure that the Eldin Bridge gate seen in the background was originally from this earlier build of the game.
Another feature of the booth were the demos for different parts of the game, including Midna and Link's treck across the roof of the castle. The layout there was vastly different than how it was in the final, released game. The inconsistency in the castle layout likely stems from this major change.
I love the finished game, though I do wonder what could have been if the game had kept the original elements and features into release. I rather liked the original Ordon village, even if it was annoying trying to sneak behind Rusl to take his sword. I guess we'll never know.

Given how careful they usually are about their iconography, I wonder if there's a lore significance to the Twili-like patterns in this Hyrule Castle. Like, perhaps it suggests the Interlopers were originally led by a seditionist movement from within the Royal Family. Or maybe it's just meant to suggest that this Hyrule Castle predates the banishment of the Interlopers, and that they were at one time an integrated part of the kingdom.

I only got the Wii version which is the only version I could get of this, but I have called this game one of my favorites for a very long time just from the fact of how epic it truly is, this is a game I love to revisit every now & then and every single time I am filled with joy as I play through the journey, the world, the companian Midna, the items, the dungeons, even the Bosses, ESPECIALLY ZANT I LOVE FIGHTING HIM, I WANT BOSS REMATCHES SO I CAN FACE HIM WHENEVER I WANT!!
This is just a game I absolutely love and I wish that they just port the Wii U version over to the Switch already since I can't get the Wii U because it was either that or the Switch.
Also since I am so used to that flipped layout since I am stuck with the Wii version, seeing the original version of these dungeons have just left me confused about which way was actually which.

I know im rather late to this video, but i wanted to share that this is my 2nd or 3rd favorite Zelda game (tied closely in 2nd or 3rd with TotK, and then Skyward Sword taking 1st). I absolutely adore the story in Zelda games, making sense of why a heavy story driven game like SS would be my favorite. I love all of your "Dungeon Design" videos on the Zelda games with your own unique take on discussing themes, progression, and history behind each area/dungeon.
One neat thing, that I'm not sure many people know as a running gag in the final boss fights, is that you can actually utilize both the fishing rod and bottle in the final boss fight. During the Puppet Zelda phase, you can reflect her projectiles during the Deadman's Volley with empty bottle, which is a direct callback to Ocarina of Time where you can use an empty bottle in that game to reflect the projectiles that Ganondorf shoots during his own Deadman's Volley. The fishing rod is utilized during the final swordfight to distract Ganondorf to make an opening to strike. Likewise, in Skyward Sword you can use the bug net to distract Demise momentarily to create an opening for a skyward strike or sword slash. In both games Ganondorf/Demise both look at the end of the fishing rod/bug net leading to the assumption it was 100% intended, and programed, to function that way. It's awesome seeing Nintendo take the otherwise useless items during battle and find unique ways to incorporate them into the final fights. Really funny things I realized after the endless amounts of hours playing the final fights to try and perfect them after beating the game countless times.
P.S. I don't think you mentioned a Deadman's Volley in the conclusion of Skyward Sword, but i do think there is one there. During the final phase of the Ghirahim fight with the big sword, he ends up charging up energy and sending them at you, to which you can reflect them back or swipe them aside. Just another neat thing that Nintendo does to call back to the already established ideas of the final bosses :)

If memory serves, Ganondorf mentions that the Twili have interesting spells despite not being as powerful as him and using their spells is why he was able to possess Zelda and teleport around during the Ganon battle. I think they go a step too far by implying that the Ganon transformation is also a byproduct of Twili magic, but I may be misremembering that part.

I love how you also analyse the music of the dungeons. :) I said it before, Iam excited to see how you'll do that with Totk. Some of them seem to be so different within a dungeon (espescially in the lightning temple), but still there is to find consistency, melodies transitioned by different instruments, changing in pace and Volume, building up on each other, its great! Back to hyrule castle: have you played castlevania games before? I really wish... just for one time... that a castle is really designed like a huge authentic castle with all parts being explorable and totally realistic. Botw's did the best job so far, but it feels less logically connected, because of the long halls, mostly located underground of the castle. But maybe that's just me. ;)

  • @RinRin-ge7bq
    @RinRin-ge7bq 2 года назад +2

Hmmm I wonder if the Twilight symbols used in the castle floor have to do with the fact that the Royal Family and the Twili used to be connected? Weren't the Twili banished to the Twilight realm after actually being residents of Hyrule? Or am I getting that piece of lore wrong? Wouldn't be the first time 😂 If I'm right though, then you'd have to question why the Royal Family would keep that iconography in their castle if they had cut ties with the Twili. Unless they are just really all about embracing their past no matter the case. But then you have to think of the Sheikah and how the Royal Family was pretty keen on covering up their bloody past with them! Oof, so much to consider!!!! 😆
I absolutely LOVE your analysis of the music and how it all plays into the rising tension. The Ganondorf theme overpowering the Hyrule Castle theme is so impactful, like you said! It's almost like the Hyrule Castle theme is trying its best to come out on top, but it just can't - Ganondorf's theme is just too powerful! Says a lot about the tone and the story itself, as well as playing into the despair and desperation of Hyrule's people in this time. Like the Ori themes, Zelda's music is, like, PART of the lore, I swear!! 😊
I also completely agree with you about the swordsman buried by the tree! It's honestly the only thing that makes sense - who else would have special treatment like that in their burial? It's so awesome when we get to find these little secrets!
I also wonder if Ganondorf's sudden ability to be able to possess actually came from Zant? Since they were in cahoots and Zant considered Ganondrof a god, I wonder if Zant granted Ganondorf some of his own Twilight magic? Being that Ganondorf uses the Twilight "pixels" (as I like to call them😂) to dematerialize and possess her, perhaps it's a newfound power!
This game is so epic and it has gone down in history as one of the best Zelda games, I think! Midna is my favorite companion (besides the King of Red Lions....Larry!!😂😂) and this version of Epona is really cool too. The darkness of the game is so impactful and memorable. I truly hope they give us a Switch version soon!
Thank you so much for covering the dungeons in this one, Capt! Your vids (bideos) are always so fun and interesting to watch! Can't wait for the next one 😊

I've figured that this is a pretty unpopular opinion, but I just never felt any sort of tension in the final phase of the fight against Ganondorf in this game. Like you stated in an earlier video, there are a lot of dungeons in this game, which translates into a lot of heart containers that you are pretty much guaranteed to get (getting to the battle with less than 14 hearts actually seems like an achievement in and of itself), and yet he does only half a heart of damage... Sure a final boss doesn't need to be difficult to be good, but there is just something about being able to make literally dozens of mistakes in one go and still not lose that just ruins it for me.

After playing both TP and Skyward Sword on the Wii it almost felt like BOTW was a step backwards in terms of controls (same with the TP HD remaster).
I really hope the sequel has the option for both styles, as well as if they port TP to the switch so that the player has the choice to play how they prefer like they did in Skyward Sword HD.
That way it makes both sides happy and the people with accessibility issues or those who just prefer standard controls can have that, and the people who prefer the more realistic/physical style of play are also satisfied.

hyrule castle is a decent dungeon but as an end game dungeon, its navigation and layout feels kind of underwhelming. the hidden graveyard was a nice but the rest of the micro challenges are kind of lack luster. the tower section felt like it was the most developed and a more upscaled ganon's tower section from oot but outside of the darknut, the combat sections felt like a step down. i do like how the dungeon has branching paths, but overall this has a layout more appropriate as the "disc 1" final dungeon. had it included a path to re-explore the sewers and other sections such as being able to reach zelda's tower then this dungeon could have delivered. i argue sky keep is the best of the 3D end game dungeons because the puzzle box nature was a very innovative design feature for evolving dungeons which sadly botw's divine beasts took a step backwards. compared to 2D dungeons, i think the first 3 entries in the series handled end game dungeons in a more appropriate manner by being the longest and toughest dungeons in their entries. overall, i think this dungeon is more middle of the road in terms of navigational layout. it has a nice thematic style and decent navigation but it could have been much more.

my take on the bosses? puppet zelda is an original take narratively speaking but the fight itself is a repeat of oot ganondorf's fight but with rng based stall moves and where tennis was getting very stale; beast ganon has that "puzzle boss" sort of gimmick where the latter half is like performing quick time events while relying on a laggy input. horseback ganondorf again is a first in the series with the epic scenario but the mechanics feel clunky (TP's horseback combat was a first to use swords but have not aged well and the HD remaster seemingly made the controls feel worse) and the sword duel is one of the best final boss fights in the series.

Hi! All the music in my videos aside from game ost is original music that I’ve written for these videos.
Here’s the track for the intro: ruclips.net/video/Bvm5CYmefNM/видео.html

Dungeons were fine but the bosses, while visually stunning, were far too easy when compared to other games in the series. That and the underused items were always my major issues with this game. Zelda herself could've been a bit more fleshed out and I don't think it would have negatively impacted Midna's protagonism. Still a solid Zelda game nonetheless.

I appreciate the efforts went into making the video, but I have to say the title is somehow misleading and I’m kinda disappointed by the contents.
I thought this video would tackle on level/dungeon design but it mostly just a water-down description of the dungeon itself. There’s no focus, and nothing particularly interested to learn in terms of design. I apologize for the negative criticism but I’d love to hear more design perspective if that is possible

I appreciate that your comment is well articulated about your criticisms. That’s rare on RUclips tbh.
I’m trying to wrap my head around it a bit though. I don’t want to have a knee-jerk, defensive response, but I do feel as though I get pretty in depth about level design. I mean, I swear I don’t talk about nothing for 40 minutes haha.
Granted the “progression” section is pretty much a summary or walkthrough of the dungeon, but the themes section before that does dissect the level design choices in detail, (layouts, the three act structure, freedom of choice as to what you can or can’t explore) as well as lore, architecture, and music.
Idk, I have a whole series of these videos, breaking down each dungeon, and when there are concepts are repeated i tend to not go as in-depth on said concept as I did the first time around to avoid redundancy, so perhaps that’s where things are taking short for you. Cheers and thanks for your honesty.

@@CaptBurgerson Thanks for carrying on a friendly conversation. I agree that this is probably just a choice of video style. I’ll check out some of your older videos to see more!

Been getting into the souls series after beating elden ring and it feels Zelda can learn a lot from them. Not since the original zelda have I felt the way the souls games do where your always afraid of dyeing and being sent back. That being said I feel twilight princess looks and feels very similar in some regards.

TP is one of the easiest Zelda games and have no where near the difficulty to create that type of “on your toes” kind of feel.

Twilight Princess hasn't aged particularly well in some ways. It doesn't have the best story in the series, the most rewarding gameplay, the most nostalgic themes, or the most innovative mechanics. Why, then, do click on this one rather than another video for a Zelda game's dungeon design? I honestly don't know, but bring it on.
