  • This video demonstrates a variation of long-tail cast on using a provisional yarn. This cast on works well for sideways designs in garter, where you need to graft the cast on and final edge for a seamless look.
This method is also handy when you need to cast on a very large number of stitches, because you don't need to calculate the length of the tail. Use another strand of main yarn instead of provisional yarn and break it when you have cast on all your stitches.

So the scrap yarn will be taken off at a point?

@@evabazan1966 yes, when you're about to graft (seam) your piece. But you can also use this cast on when you need a very long tail. You then use two separate strands of the same yarn.

@@evabazan1966 Yes, that's the idea. You take it out leaving live stitches from your cast on to be grafted together with the stitches of your last row for a seamless looking join.

Does the weight of the scrap yarn and the main yarn have to be the same?
