No crank - No start on my 2007 Nissan Xterra. Diagnosis and Repair.

  • Over the period of a month I diagnosed and ultimately repaired my Xterra to get it back running. This video highlights some of the processes I used along with resources that you may find helpful. If you have any questions that I may not have answered in the video, please leave them in the comments section below and I will reply to you as soon as possible. I understand that this no crank, no start, one click issue can be very frustrating so I will do my best to help you as much as I can. Thank you for watching.
    Total cost for all parts and supplies that I used during this process was between $400-450. I called the Nissan and just for parts, they said it would be $675. I would assume for installation that would take the total somewhere around $1000! Though it took me a while to get the X running again, I will gladly take the savings.

    Thank you for this video. My Xterra needed a new battery. I had ran a diagnostic in my garage on my Xterra’s battery using my multimeter and decided it needed a new battery since the old one was below 12V with the engine off for hours and nothing else using power. Also, it was struggling a little to start with the colder weather. I swapped out the battery, and the positive terminal had TONS of corrosion on it, so I swapped out that terminal also (negative looked great). Xterra started up more beauto fully than it had in months. I turned the car off, grabbed a bite to eat in the house, and then went to run an errand. I went to turn the key and I then started having the exact same problems you described in this video.
    My knee-jerk was it was a starter issue, but decided against buying a new starter initially. I found this video Sunday night after a day of trying different cheap things in my garage (relays/fuses). I went out Monday when daylight was back, sanded the heck out of the other positive terminal leads and then did the key trick in the door. She started up beautifully and had no problems all day. If I hadn’t watched this, my car would probably still be in the garage and maybe even in a shop. Thank you so much for posting!!!

    It worked for me but with locking and unlocking from the inside. Locked and unlocked about four times by pressing the lock/unlock buttons, then tried starting it and it worked! If it does not work from the outside with the actual key, try it from the inside with the buttons and with the door closed. Thank you very much for the tips!

    Great video. You have amazing persistence. I just spent 3 weeks putting a new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel in my 2006 Xterra. Disconnected the battery as instructed in RUclips videos. When I reconnected and tried to start vehicle I got the one click and started to freak out. Hoping it wasn't something electric since I'm terrible at running those problems down I searched and found this video. I tried the door lock/unlock the next morning and still one click. I then discovered that the clutch pedal arm wasn't pushing the pin down on the sensor at the firewall. There was a hole in the arm that the sensor pin was simply going thru, so I quickly put a bolt in the hole with the head facing the pin, pushed the clutch in and she started. I'm not sure if it would have started if I hadn't done the lock/unlock thing first, but wanted to let you manual transmission people know that perhaps the safety sensor isn't being depressed if your Xterra won't start. I now have a plastic bolt in the hole to replace the initial large metal one.

      Thanks for the comment and it seems that you have a lot of persistence as well. I recently replaced the timing chains and guides (video coming soon) and that really challenged me. I'm thankful it's complete and working properly now, but it was quite the job. Thanks for sharing your experience so others can learn from it. It's great to be a part of the Xterra community.

      Had the same strarting problem : on click and nothing... checked and cleaned the battery terminals, still same problem... looked to find the starter but decided to see what I could find on RUclips bofore proceeding to crawl under the vehicule. Looked at this video but was a bit despaired until I read your comment, Jack. I checked your suggestion and found that there was a hole in the clutch pedal where it is supposed to actuate the clutch switch... the plastic plug, that was supposed to be there, was lying on the floor under the clutch pedal... installed a 1/2" bolt (10mm head) in the clutch pedal hole and VOILÀ, problem fixed... Thank's Jack for your suggestion, that saved me hours of fiddling around !

    So, let me add to this great video and thread. I, like all of you went through all the same attempts. Well, I did the Immobilizer key fix. It worked sometimes, but ultimately the problem would come back. Well, I figured it was the fact that I didn’t have my original key and was only using my valet key.
    I got a tech to come out and make me a new key. He programmed it to the car and vroom…it starts. But on my first outting it’s been acting a little funny. I haven’t gotten stuck, but I don’t feel super confident yet.

    I was searching for bad fuses to fix my dome lights... After I got that I tried to start engine with zero luck. Checked all fuses and relays... (the labeling for them on the insides of the lids... Lets just say they could be more specific) anyways, after lots of searing... I pulled the neg battery cable for 30 minutes. After I reconnected the battery cable, it started like a charm. Easy cheap fix. Got to love those.

    Thanks for posting this video. I went through a similar saga of replacing starters only to have the one click issue persist. You mentioned that you were not sure if it was tightening the fusible link or the anti theft. I think it was tightening the fusible link that was the fix. I first tried the lock/unlock process before messing with the battery connection and was still getting the issue. However I noticed that there was a little play in the bolt that attaches the fusible link to the battery terminal and after pulling that off, making sure everything was aligned and retightening the terminal connector my truck started right away. Plus its not the first time Ive had an issue with that part. personally I think that fusible link is a dumb design I wish they would have just kept all the fuses in the fuse box. Once again, thanks for making this video!

    Damn, I commend you for your patience and perseverance. If that was me, I would have had that car "crushed." You did all the right trouble shooting steps. My strong feeling of what happened at end was that it was the self-immobilizer. Modern cars are full of all these bullshit hidden "triggers" - that force people to give up and take it to a mechanic (they hope it will be to the dealership). A final stupid hurdle meant to keep you from succeeding. But good on you.

      @TheNonnell  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you for the comment. My cousin recently had the same issue with his 03 Xterra. It turned out to be his starter. He has over 200k on his vehicle. His starter was stuck and he kept trying to start the vehicle unknowingly draining the battery. I hooked up my Xterra to his, made sure voltage was over 12V at his terminals, and I kept cranking the vehicle while he was underneath hitting the starter. Luckily his starter was stuck, broke loose, and started after a few attempts. He replaced the starter and was good to go. Best of luck!

    I would have bridged the starter with a screwdriver and if it cranks then its something to do with the ignition. If it doesn't crank then, i'd say it's the engine or the flywheel or possibly the starter not aligning properly where the gear is kicked out but it hits the teeth. I have the issue with my 2002 xterra, but my was the head gasket and coolant in the oil. I thought my engine was seizing up, but i will have to upen up the bottom end to check the main bearings

    Good you got it running (those types of gremlins can be very frustrating).
    That said, I crinched in the very beginning when seeing you working on it w/o having first TOTALLY removed the negative battery cable. ALWAYS remove that one first - cause if you slip with the wrench, bright fire will follow. A battery will easily burn off a wrench, leaving a real mess (disregarding the real risk for serious injuries...).
    And if battery posts are a bit 'stuck', try to gently twist them with a wrench, not pry them upwards with screw driver.

    Thank you, great video. I have the same problem but it’s intermittent. I noticed that you didn’t remove the heat shielding when you removed the starter. How did you fish it out? I have a 2007 4x4 and was unable to fish it through the front due to the front axle.

    • @TheNonnell
      @TheNonnell  4 года назад

      Great question. As you can see in the video, there is room in front and around the starter when I am pointing it out. Basically, after all connections and bolts were out, I wiggled it and positioned it to where it would fit down toward where you would have seen my hand come in. I believe I pulled it away from the flywheel and kind of angled it down and did some wiggling. After that it was pretty easy to extract. The shielding was a minimal issue, and didn't interfere too much. So, it can be done, but it may take some tetris skills. I hope that helps some. Unfortunately, I didn't video that portion because I thought the whole process was going to take longer, but surprisingly, I was able to get it out in less than 30min. Best of luck!

      Honestly I’m not sure. Found these two entries on an Xterra forum.
      1. Had this happen to me last week, the grounds for your ECU wire harness are probably loose, corroded or both. Check that and you should be good
      2. I got a U1000 code before my whole incident. It was the start of my transmission catching on fire. U1000 indicate a short on one of the grounds of your wiring harness. Please go see a dealer and have it fix. They will tell you to bring it in "when convenient," but 50 miles later my tranny blew up and now their is over $11,000 worth of damage.

      Yes, it was, but it had a good result in the end. I've learned that a lot of patience is needed when sorting out mechanical gremlins.

      I'm not sure if you watched the whole video, but the Xterra ran. Actually, it still runs. I haven't had any issues after the repairs that I made. Initially, I considered replacing the IPDM; however, I never felt that I truly needed to, especially after talking with the online mechanic. It's been 8 months now and the truck runs great.
