I'm having trouble with the hard to reach flange bolt on the drivers side. If I take off the front drive shift it would be cake. But that's alot of work
This video really helped me out! I had both drivers side and passengers side rear bolts broken when removing stock manifolds to install long tubes. Using the broken stud as a guide was a great little trick for the install. Don't know where I'd be without y'alls videos! I've saved thousands thanks yo y'all!!

This is a great method, I used it to remove 2 on my truck. Another handy tool that works really well with this method is a tiny plumber's pipe wrench, like 6" long. It can grab onto the bolt and can be easier to lock it on and turn, readjust, and turn. Using vice grips only killed my hands, you only get like 1/8 of a turn and have to relock them tight every time.
The original type bolts at 4:18 shows tapered bolts (on top) which are ALOT better to guide the exhaust manifold back into place than those straight ones with no taper.
I'm a weekend mechanic really is very helpful keep the videos up because no matter what the price is I'll pay it just to get the information but you are reasonable in your price also
I had the same bolt break as you did but you just had the head pop off, my bolt broke off half way down and there is nothing to get a hold of. Is there any way to get it out without pulling the whole motor because I don't think there is any room to drill it out.
+Mel Hardee We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
It did on my truck...if your exhaust is leaking, it can cause the O2 sensor to be slightly thrown off and signaling a computer code. This results in the check engine light coming on.
Why would you want to skimp out on a $20 gasket? After spending hours of labor removing and reinstalling the manifold, the old gasket should be replaced. Otherwise, you may find yourself doing it all over again.
I have that same broken drivers side bolt that's hard to get to but it broke off in the head. I guess I'll have to use a screw extractor with a tiny right angle drill (ebay). Any comments or anyone know someone who has done that?
Go with metric Grade 10.9 (English grade 8) manifold bolts. They are stronger and will hold up better. Try not to skimp and use the softer grade 5 bolts, otherwise, you might find yourself replacing them again.
@@1AAuto so i wanna do a gasket replacement so these are basically the steps right?and one more thing i have a ticking maniflod sound is a gasket replacement the rignt job to solve that?
why no use a spray to help ??? liquid wrench i have... vice grips to loosen broken stud then pliers to unscrew it out maybe ???... now some say to remove exhause manifold off to sand flat or check for flatness. then no use gasket just use a high temp silicone glue... just say`n
They look like APDTY Zinc plated bolts. They are metric grade 10.9 (English = grade 8). You can use the lighter (grade 5) bolts, but I would personally go with the stronger bolts. GM LS engines are notorious for their exhaust manifold bolts breaking off.
OVI-Wan Kenobi. You are right. But I guess if someone is lucky enough, the bolts will have broken leaving enough to grab with vice grips. Most of us are not so lucky
TELL ME, HOW DO YOU GO BOUT GETTING THEM OUT WHEN THEY ARE BROKE OFF FLUSH WITH THE HEAD, IN OTHER WORDS YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOCK YOUR VISE GRIPS ON???????
MAJOR PROBLEM: On the REPLACEMENT manifold bolts they thread the full length of the bolt. **The factory bolts do not** If you check, the new bolts will bottom out much sooner, and in turn be barely contacting the manifold and gasket. Its one of the biggest over-looked issues that leads to more Exhaust manifold problems because they're basically loose. To see for yourself, test the bolts and see how far they screw in. You'll find they hardly touch the manifold before bottoming out, if at all. Conclusion: Cut the bolts shorter or remove the first 3-threads with a grinder. Fixed it for me, so I could then properly torque the manifold to 18lbs. Hope this helps.
Nice but useless when all my broken bolts are broken inside the hole in the head. I need to extract them out ! No the same easy job since you need to remove a lot of stuff like complete header, wheel well plastic etc.
+Frmsanjosecalifornia Search our RUclips channel, should be a video showing the removal if memory serves. Good luck! 1aauto.com?RUclips&CTA%20Comment&ATony 866-403-3393

with the help of your videos you can make almost anybody a mechanic of course nothing experience but its hard to explain experience
Check out the Kral auto parts brackets. Used for a bolt broke in the head. Much easier. Doorman and others make a similar bracket as well.
I really appreciate your videos, I’ve saved 💰💰💰doing it myself.👍🏽👍🏽

This is a great video. I want to do this. But I’m nervous about snapping a bolt. Is there a risk of snapping them when taking them off?

What's the first bolt with the connector attached at the front of the manifold that goes to the power box
Very good video only difference with my 03 Sierra 1500 is my bolts are 9/16
I recently found two bolts broken off in my 2013 GMC Sierra, will this cause the check engine light to come on if not replaced soon?

Do you have to replace the gasket too? Or is it recommended?

@@kramerflamer you don't spend hours.
20min Max!
the manifold reminds me of a Ford, 289 V-8 the long bolts then the short ones ford had very Good design.

I have the same problem. Has anyone responded with any help?
I'm about to undertake this job, were you guys able to fix it?
The big question, are the New bolts better, or will they break in time as well?
they will become more brittle after a couple of years
Go with metric Grade 10.9 (English grade 8) manifold bolts. They are stronger and will hold up better. Try not to skimp and use the softer grade 5 bolts, otherwise, you might find yourself replacing them again.
So would this apply to the 5.3 2005 envoy xl?
+Jr Beina Yes this would also apply to the 2005 GMC Envoy XL 5.3L.

NO!
Of course it will!
It's the same engine you domm
So what's the trick to keep these bolts from rusting out and snapping can you just put WD-40 or transmission fluid on them?
What are the chances of the other bolts breaking when removing?
50 50 my friend
Either you take it out
Or you don't.
Which way does the gasket go in, one side is bright and one is gray
how much does this repair usually cost on a 2001 chevy 2500?
Shoeb Fasih my local oil change place gave me an estimate for 540 bucks lol
$20 a per stud at the Mufflerman shop, last time it was done, had 13 broken out of 16. Then add the gaskets
@Future house cleaner how much did it end up costing you afterall?
So there is no bolt tightening sequence for exhaust manifold
nice i was wondering how i goint to do this sweet vid.
Same thing happened on my 01 1500HD. I'm afraid to try and remove the other bolts in fear that they will snap at the head. :(
What size pipe fits exhaust manifold pipe before catylatic convertor? To run straight pipe
very good video
mine snapped flush with the block tried drilling them out but could get a bit to cut into the bolt what do you suggest
Buy a clamp

Shouldn't you use some never-seize on the bolt threads???
+kevino25701 That's up to you, if you do, make sure it's the high temp copper version.
Excellent
Great vid. What grade are these replacement bolts? Thanks

A small pipe wrench works better than vise grips, for me anyway.

Yes
Good luck doing this when the bolts break off off below flush.

thx sir
And what are factory radio wire colors so I can connect radio to wires directly
Why do they break to begin with?
Exhaust manifold bolts weaken over time because of all the heating and cooling cycles they go through.
MAJOR PROBLEM: On the REPLACEMENT manifold bolts they thread the full length of the bolt. **The factory bolts do not** If you check, the new bolts will bottom out much sooner, and in turn be barely contacting the manifold and gasket. nice, you didnt do the passenger side so you didnt have to explain how to actually remove the dipstick line that goes through the manifold
I’m about to do both of my sides on my 99 Silverado. I didn’t know you had to remove a dipstick.
Forgot about that trans line
