I’ve been in production mode making these box pouches as gifts and a friend suggested that I film a tutorial on how to make them.
There are approximately a bajillion box pouch tutorials out there (trust me, I did the research 🤡), but I I wanted one with very specific proportions and I also wanted to incorporate a handle. Sooooo I came up with my own version.
The finished pouch measures around 4 1/4” x 4 1/2” x 6” and is a great size for holding toiletries, sanitary napkins, snacks, etc.
I use mine to carry a battery pack, chargers, and airpods for when I work at a coffee shop.
If you’ve got a nice stash of bottom-weight fabrics and you need to emergency sew some last-minute Holiday or Christmas gifts, then this tutorial is a good one!
Also, feel free to ask any questions in the comments if you found any step unclear or confusing.
    ✂️ FABRIC & NOTIONS
    • Suggested Main Fabric: Medium-Heavy Weight Fabric (10-14 oz) such as Waterproof Canvas, Duck Canvas, Waxed Canvas, Denim, Linen, Cordura, etc.
    • Suggested Lining Fabric: Medium Weight Fabric (4-6 oz) such as Cotton or Polyester Twill
    • Suggested Binding Fabric: Light Weight Cotton Fabric such as Quilting Cotton or Cotton Poplin
    • Zipper: #5 Zipper Tape with Nylon Coil + Zipper Pull
    • Handle/Tab: 1” Webbing or Ribbon (Grosgrain or Satin)
    • Rectangle Cutting Guide: Cardstock or similar. I cut up a watercolor painting that I was lukewarm about.
📝 NOTES ON FABRIC & NOTION SUGGESTIONS
    • This tutorial is optimized for omitting fusible interfacing so heavier weight fabrics with good structure or body is recommended. If using medium weight fabrics for the shell, I would suggest interfacing the fabric. The dimensions for the fusible interfacing are 7 3/4” x 10 1/4”.
    • For the lining fabric, you can also use quilting cotton or a light-weight cotton fabric. A lighter weight lining means a slightly less structural box pouch. Pair with a heavy weight main fabric or a medium weight fabric with interfacing if using a light-weight cotton fabric for lining.
    • If you plan on making a lot of pouches and bags, I highly recommend getting a length of continuous zipper tape with nylon coil. My secret is getting the version where the nylon coil looks like metal, but because it’s actually made from nylon the sewing machine can generally sew over and through the zipper teeth. Having the continuous length means you can create a zipper of any length depending on what a project requires.
    • For the handle/tab, I like to use a lightweight cotton webbing or a heavy weight satin ribbon. It really makes the pouch look more luxe and extra functional. If you are unable to source 1” webbing or ribbon for the handle, you can either omit the handle or make one using a light-medium weight fabric.
    📏 DIMENSIONS FOR CUTTING
    • Main Fabric: 8 1/2” x 11” (Cut 2)
    • Lining Fabric: 8 1/2” x 11” (Cut 2)
    • Binding Fabric: 1 3/16” x 5 1/4” (Cut 4)
    • Zipper Tape Length: 11”
    • Handle Length: 5 3/4”
    • Tab Length: 2 3/4”
    • Rectangle Cutting Guide: 1 3/4” x 2 1/8”
