@@WJ6FRadio Greg, have you tried programming the radio via the computer software and SD card? I have my radio now and can't get the radio to read the card after having added repeaters to the SD card.

I've had mine for several months and it seems to be a pretty good radio. I like how the radio can be removed from the bracket without having to unscrew it. The GPS receiver sometimes takes 10 minutes or so to detect the GPS signal. One thing that confuses me is that the box contains a longer cable for the control head, but the microphone still needs to be close to the transceiver. I had to order a microphone extension because I have the transceiver mounted under the passenger seat in my car. One little quirk... when I am in APRS mode and I go into the menus, if a signal/data comes in with a station's call sign, location, etc the radio will still show me the APRS screen. It would be nice if the radio would hold off showing the APRS screen until I am back out of the menus. Not even one month after purchasing my radio, my water bottle slid off my car seat and hit the display. Now there is a nice blotch in the center of the display.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. I wish they would have made it so the mic plugs into the head unit. I too do not like getting kicked out of the menu when in APRS. Hopefully with some update they will fix that.

Great review, is this transceiver a full dual band receive or only receive one frequency at the time?

OK I figured out how to make an equivalent to the "banks" that we are used to (FT 7900 radio for example), bu ton the FTM 300. The Advanced yaesu PDF is minimally helpful. Steps: 1) put the group you want to scan into the regular memory slots (there are 999, so spread them out in groups for example). Then go to the "limit memories" tab in the YPS m300 USB software from rtsystems. If you want to scan stations 300 to 315 for example, you must put channel 300 as a lower limit, and 315 as upper limit, in a limit memory pair. Then in memory mode on the radio (V/M button) put the station to 300 and click scan, either from the mic or the scan menu on the face. It will scan just 300-315. So it's not as easy as banks in the FT 7900. but it's better than just one bank. The secret is in rtsystems software, using the limit memories tab. I hope that helps. KE0RRN

Very clear video. One question, if you push and hold the A/B button will the display go to a single frequency display mode like the FT-3DR handheld? That makes the display larger and shows better view of the tag line. That would help me with older eyes. Thanks.

In my truck I have the ICOM 2730A mounted with the T Head power cable run from the battery. After my last overland trip I now know I need APRS function on a mobile unit and not the HT I have. WOULD I BE ABLE TO USE THE 2730 POWER CABLE FOR THE FTM-300? THEY ARE BOTH THE T HEAD STYLE? I just hate running wires through the firewall!

Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. If they both have the same T connector I don't see why it wouldn't work. I have used the same power line for an Icom IC-5100 and a Yaesu FTM-400.

in your video the tranceiver goes from digital mode (bar above the FM sign on the screen) after inputting and reset your call to analog mode ...(the bar above the fm sign is disapeared) when you go further. can you tell me how you did this? i'm looking for days to get my tranceiver in analog mode but can't find how tho do this...
so, out of the box, put in my call sign and reset the tranceiver, the 144 MHZ en 440 MHZ are in digital mode (bar above fm) and wil not receive any analog signal. in your video i see that the bars above FM on both vfo's are gone..
    please...how did you do that?

Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. You might be able to input the GMRS/FRS frequencies for receiving, but not for transmitting as they are outside of the 70cm (440 MHz) band which is 420-450 MHz. Plus there are several FCC rules about antenna size and transmit power for FRS and/or GMRS. Yaesu may have blocked anything out side of the 70 cm band.

For me it keep it in my “shack” since I use the FTM-400 in the car. So for me it is only for rag chewing. I don’t use the APRS on it. I am not sure how much the of a price difference nor features the new FTM-500 will have over the FTM-300. If not we’re me I would hold out until the FTM-500 is released.

Yes, it does. But it doesn't support C4FM to C4FM crossband, as the Fusion protocol doesn't allows a repeater to repeat a repeater. But it allows Analog to Analog or C4FM to Analog.

Seems a retrograde step to have only a single user definable memory bank after having liked them and loved them on the FT3D. Also, the QSO recording currently has no option to start a new recording automatically on each QSO as one can on ICOMs. Would be so easy to have the option. Let's hope a few extra features can be added witha firmware update!

    • @WJ6FRadio

Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Personally I haven't found a reason for wanting to record, unless it is for contesting and you don't want to miss anyones call sign.

More memory banks would make this a much more useful radio for people who drive between several cities. Scanning just the UHF or VHF or the "group" function I suppose might narrow the scan length some, but there are over a thousand slots on this radio. Nostalgia: my FT 7900 had five speed dial buttons on the front . I used them for near, farther out in city, and then to monitor GMRS/FRS , and one for a city I travel to. No dice with the FTM 300. But, the 7900 did not have digital. So I hope the digital is worth it!.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Functionally speaking they are pretty much the same. I do prefer how your program repeaters in the FTM-300. My old eyeballs prefer the FTM-400 screen size. I also like the touch screen on the FTM-400. Not sure why the FTM-300 doesn't have touch screen especially since it is the same size as the FT3
