I don't watch build videos anymore as this hobby has gotten way to serious. The idea of just having fun seems to have been forgotten. Model builders have become part time engineers and rivet counters being to worried about producing museum quality piece's. You on the other hand seem to be having fun. Keep it up.
Nice update, looking really good! 👍 I have loads of FUN with the hobby!!! That's probably why I have so many "started" kits. I want to build them all.... Start one kit, then see another I want to build... Fun, Fun, Fun!
Sky undersides, tsk! Great looking model Jason. I completely agree with your philosophy. Trying to get something 110% right can suck all of the joy out of a build. Instead of a relaxation it becomes a slog.
Hello, and cheers from Florida USA. Thank you for sharing your great skills in modelling. The Spitfire is my all time favorite piston engine aircraft. Please, if you haven't seen it, The movie"Spitfire." Great documentary with beautiful arial footage. Thanks again Mike
A splendid build, as usual. Not a criticism, but just one extra touch anyone might consider trying. I like to rub a bit of pencil graphite over the exhausts with my finger, just to give them a bit of a burnished metal effect, and maybe add some bronze and gun metal to the mix. They're essentially discoloured steel and not really 'rusty' or matt, although that's how they're often portrayed - there's always a bit of a shine. Anyway, that's a lovely Spit!
Yes for the exhausts that works well, but staining on the fuselage is a "missed" art and can make a model. I see Champion has used a dark smoke stain, whereas the slate grey of burnt petrol deposits is what I see most in photos (like the upper wings of a Lancaster) and in modern warbird shots. The two rear stubs of a three stack exhaust often exhibit this. Difficult to get right and often over or underdone. As per his philosophy...its whatever works for you! Great job.
Great Video. I am building the same a/c AB509 JMC but in D Day markings , the personal aircraft of Wg Cdr Johnny Checketts DFC DSO, CO of 142 Wing based at Horne Airfield in the run up to and on D Day. The aircraft is a Vc rather than LF Vc. The engine determined the LF rather than the clipped wings. The engine mark is Merlin 45. LF's had the 45M.
In days of old (i.e. far longer ago than I care to remember!) it seemed we only had Airfix (maybe Revell, or even Matchbox) - primarily 1/72 scale and I used to make the best job I could. This was before the days of aftermarket features, etches etc., or washes/weathering. I'm enjoying getting back into the hobby at the larger scale. I'm not skilled enough to hyper-detail a kit and have often stepped back if I've felt I'm getting a bit OCD about something. I try not to obssess about historical accuracy. I've just ordered the Eduard "The sweeps" dual pack and was interested by your comments about decals. There appears to be an art to applying them these days! Looking forward to looking at previous vids
With the stencils and the silvering, you could try giving them a light spritz withe the surface colour. It helps make the stencils look like they were sprayed on and also covers the decal film, just don’t overdo it. Love the videos keep, it up.
I think you've missed the point of the video. Not every kit you build needs to be at a competitive level. Sometimes it's fun just to do a slammer build
It's like companies are not bothering even putting a gun sight in the kits recently so good to see! They are very nice always catch my eye! I need one for my stukka it's Missing!
@@ChampionScaleModelling yeah I'm more the armour modeller but been switching it up abit buying aircraft kit's I got the Trumpeter 1.32 Dauntless and 1.48 TBM 1.53 hobby boss storch and IL2 1.35 hut starting with the Airfix stukka! Wonder what borders will be like haha!
You are supposed to peel of the carrier film on the new Eduard decals, but they are quite specific on using Mr Color setting solutions ie (the blue and green bottle) for the decals to work the way they should. They have a nice matt finish as opposed to the typical glossy finish other decals typically have and they bedded down quite well on my Bf109 F-4 kit. But that was my experience, everyone's mileage will vary of course.
Absolutely agree. I have completed seven kits with the new Eduard decals and not had a single issue and they look amazing - just another skill to learn. I really don't know what the problem is. Most people online say negative things about them and then admit they haven't tried them.
Decals - Runaway or unleash the holy hand grenade of Antioch😉😉 my observation with the wing root fit issue - glue the cockpit in last and don't squeeze. nice job by the way.
Great video. I can hear you clearly, explanations are clear. And I want to start a build, my first and can't make up my mind which aircraft yet. Spitfire or Harrier
I agree with the eduard decals! Iv had hit and miss with them on some i have just done. Though (in some cases) iv had happy little accidents when pealing off the carrier film, been as delicate as i could some of the decal came off by the time i had finished it was like a pre weathering/chipping and for me it worked well but of course this isnt great for every one! Great kit and excellent execution !! Love it mate!
Supposedly the carrier film can be removed with mineral spirits and gentle rubbing with a moistened cotton bud on Eduard decals. Of course this doesn’t work if you use enamels… but it might help with the silvering.
I was super sceptical about the new eduard decals but I was really impressed with them tbh. They worked very well on my Saudämmerung-109-kit and I really didnt expect that. Used them with Tamiya Adhesive Softener Type to prep the surface and let them sit for half a day at least. They do need a coat of varnish afterwards but I found them really sturdy to work on, even polished a bit over them (without varnish. I wanted to get rid of a little bit of visible residue from the decal adhesive. Was gone after varnish). I tested them before on a paintmule but now thinking about it I will test them again without the Tamiya Adhesive. Maybe *that* stuff is just very good? Now I'm curious. Not using glosscoats. But on the topic at hand: Fun really has been a decreasing factor for me often enough as I develeoped a competetive mindset while building which on the one hand drives me further but on the other I never find satisfaction with my work. Well, at least it has been that way but recently I more and more liked what I did. Maybe 'cause I'm getting older?
Interesting, I will add I think the Wilde Sau boxing would be from the ‘good’ eduard decals, these new ones came in from the Mustangs and on, before that they’re some of the best I’ve used.
If I remember correctly, Eduard stated that the new decals were introduced in June 2020. It seems that Wilde Sau Episode One was released in July. So hard to know if it has the old or new decals. You can distinguish the new ones from the thick carrier film, which is very uneven and patchy. I have had similar looking techmod decals, I accidentally peeled off the carrier film of them.
Nice simple build. I agree, sometimes it's good to just get a nice model done and built simply for the satisfaction of completing something. Even if you know that you have the ability to have made it "better". If by making it "better" you spoil the enjoyment, it's probably not worth it.
A really nice build and I like what you did with the clipped wing nav lights……….however, Eduard do include other clipped wing caps on their clear sprue to avoid having to fashion your own lights . I am building the 2 Spits from the ‘Eagles Call’ boxing which just happen to be the ones on the box art . I completely agree about the decals , the stencils were a challenge and I have strived to paint on markings where possible on both builds, sadly I couldn’t locate masks for the squadron codes of the 2nd build so I will hope for the best. Such is my distrust for the eduard decals that I have even masked and painted the walkway lines on the wings successfully! Loving the content, keep up the good work 👍🏻
It looks like fun to me!!! 🎉 I have this kit to build. I’ve not upgraded to an airbrush yet. Will brush painting look good on this finer detail Eduard kit?
Hello, I’m a little worried, you’ve gone on about the difference between the different models of Spitfires. When do you have to become a historian. I’m really new to the hobby and I enjoy learning new techniques so I watch your channel, but in all honesty I wouldn’t know MK1 or MK2 if they landed in my back garden. So I find it a little daunting. So do I have to do a lot of research on the model or just learn from the builds. Sorry for sounding a bit naive. Nice model though.
Just have fun mate, I like Spitfires so I learn stuff about them, If I wanted to build an F15 I wouldn’t know who flew it (🇺🇸 almost 😉) let alone anything else but I’d still build it if I wanted to.
Hi, I'm about to start an Eduard Spitfire and would like to ask where I can get better decals, this will only be my third model so very new and learning. Thank you
You could of avoided clipping out the wing light by using the clear version of the wing end cap which is usually on the clear parts sprue. Eduard have always done this with their Spitfire kits.
Im not a huge fan of weathering, yes for some tanks i love weathering on my jagdpanther i know it will look awesome same with all my desert vechiles, but i generally prefer the clean finish
