This was epic. What another beautiful spot. Both with and without the snow. Am having a lot of enjoyment working my way through your wonderful catalogue of videos featuring our .awesome country. Thank you for taking me and everyone else along.
Thank you for sharing, I'm always thankful for the outdoor therapy, in-between getting out there for myself. When I first started watching I couldn't wait for a new video to come out, now I have to catch up, thanks for all the effort and time you put in, much appreciated.
Oh yes indeed. I am doing something a bit different and unfamiliar on my next trip so there is lots of practice going on for that one. I am reminding myself of the old scout motto 'be prepared', rather than the New Zealand saying 'she'll be right' (which means 'somehow it will work out').
AB Camping has really shown me a New Zealand I never knew. It is such a beautiful country. I came across your posts and fell for your approach to camping. Thank you for sharing your experience.❤
Another classic shot--the trees, the tarn, is that the word, the lichen covered rocks, the snow covered mountain with the accompanying companion peaks, all framing your lovely face.
Yes, tarn, that's correct. Thank you, I have been trying to improve on my thumbnail photos. I usually am so busy I completely forget to stop and take photographs for the thumbnail, so thank you for commenting on the contents and framing.
well, now that was a great adventure . That snow on the grass you were walking through was really pretty. That was some rapid change in the weather from warm to rain to snow. I enjoyed coming along with you very much. Dwayne.
Welcome. Thanks for stopping by to say 'hi'. I agree that it is nice to see other people's experiences across the world. The world is so diverse and it is interesting to see how others do things, or the environment that they are in.
Your gratitude and enthusiasm jump right off the screen, a rare quality, great video. You are so successful in creating a cozy atmosphere in challenging conditions.
I liked your tarp setup Cathy when you finally got it up. I am loving tarps more and more watching your videos. Love tents as well. What a perfect place to set up just under the trees so the snow wasn’t weight the tarp down much. The fire set it off perfectly. Look forward to more winter camps. I love the winters. Well done again. ⛺️🏕❄️❄️
Thanks Caroloum. Yes that spot turned out to be perfect because the trees sheltered most of the tarp and the fire from the falling snow. I had been worried at first about the weight of the snow on the tarp, so it turned out very well.
I so look forward to your adventures and when I knew this was coming on today I couldn’t wait to see it. I love your optimism and your willingness to just go with the flow and make the best of things. That’s what life is all about. You do it well.
Thanks so much. I agree, there is a lot to worry about in life, but there is something about being out in nature that is so therapeutic, and I think for me it is that thing you have identified. It works best if you adapt, go with the flow, remain optimistic. It's like nature is this bigger, stronger power and you can't change it so you have to find a way to be with it.
Great video Cathy, watching from Scotland. Love camping. I’m so envious of your beautiful New Zealand . Well done you for getting out and living life. ❤
Thanks so much Nancy. There are little snores coming from the bean bag, she is just back from a lovely walk with her dog buddy. I will give her your hug.
Always a pleasure and the views are spectacular. Absolutely love your positive look on all things nature. Was tickled to see you have so much fun. Thank you and take care Cathy 🙂 Give Indi a cuddle ❣️
Yip, I think incorporating other people's ideas is great when it works, but ultimately you need to trust your own instincts, and who cares if it doesn't look pretty! Happy camping.
This is my favourite of yours so far. I had to laugh with you when I saw you were just like me sometimes when trying to figure out what to do when setting up the tarp, and forgetting, and changing your mind. Made me love you all the more. So human. Of course, I'm Canadian and used to extreme cold, so I got as kick out of the shorts. Loved it. And the landscape is so beautiful. Love all the snow. We used to get tons of snow here, but climate change has left us this past winter with only 3 days of snow the whole winter. Didn't even need my boots. Lol. Thanks so much for the entertainment, comradery and scenery. Still missed Indi.
Oh what a shame about your lack of snow. I feel that if you are going to have winter it is nice to have snow, especially if you are set up for it. ah yes, being prepared to be honest about getting things muddled, or stuffing up. We all do it but somehow we all think we are the only one.
RUclips just recommended your channel to me and Im glad they did ,as I thoroughly this adventure, now have alot of catching up to do. Live in Nelson, so not far from you, I have subscribed and liked, great editing😀😀
Yay, I love it when I know 'locals' are watching because what I do and how I do it and my humour etc will resonate easily with you. I hope you really enjoy the channel.
I've been backcountry hiking for 40 years now . I see a lot of technical youtube videos - and people doing weird and funny things. I like yours though - I love your authenticity and your transparency - thanks for sharing your thinking and mindset with us - as you fought through the little drama. Nice work. respect.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that coming from someone whose been there done that. ha ha, you are so right about there being lots of funny things people do in outdoor videos. Sometimes I look and think 'no way that's gonna work in a real life situation'.
Thank you Aaron! That is such a nice thing to hear. That is what these trips are for me too, a bit of peace and escape, even if it seems odd that I would be at peace in such weather, I really am. I think it must be that natural human instinct to 'nest'. When I have a shelter up, a warm fire, and a meal in my belly it feels like I have won the lottery of life, it really does, and nothing else matters in that moment.
This was so wonderful! I camp in the Adirondack’s in Upstate NY and I so enjoyed watching this! I thought your tarp set up was perfect 😊 more importantly, setting up in that weather!! Yikes. I long to build up the bravery to solo backpack as a female…not quite there yet. You are an inspiration!!
Hi Cathy ☺️👋, greetings from Canada, RUclips recommend your channel to me and wow you're personality it absolutely amazing, don't ever change please it's very refreshing to see people being themselves 😊👋
You are amazing for keeping it all real in the set up process and including it all in the final video. Trying to recreate a tarp set up under stress and impending weather is a true challenge. Kudos to you for taking a moment to collect and have a cup of hot tea. As an American, I did pick up a few new fun phrases from this one..."bloomin' heck" and "It's a bit dicky"...lol Your fire was a work of art, so warm and cozy looking. Great camp video and thanks for taking us along.
Great vid again, sorry but my favourite bit was when you weren't sure what was going wrong early on and you went and sat under some trees lol. Love your vids 😎😎
I think that is great that you enjoyed that part. Nothing in my videos in 'scripted' and all happens as it happens but to some degree I have pre-thought through what I think will happen.. and then ... something does not go to plan and I have to sit under the trees and have a cuppa. So in a way that was the most natural and authentic part.
Thank-you so much for your wonderful adventure in the snow, look watching your camping trips as they are so full of your love and happiness for nature. Big hugs from Australia. 🙏
First time viewer from across the ditch....really enjoyed this adventure and looking forward to catching up with your back catalogue. What a stunning place and very cool camp setup....can't wait for winter so I can get out and do the same thing - the summer here has been unpleasantly hot and wet! New subscriber 👍
Thanks for stopping by to say 'Hi' Herb. I hope you will enjoy the channel, past and future. Just back from a trip and planning another, so there is more to come. Cheers, Cathy
As an old tramper, my favourite piece of gear is a thin wool blanket. It is sewn up as a sleeping bag, elastic around the top. It's primary use is, of course, a sleeping bag middle liner. So silk liner then wool bag then down sleeping bag. It means I can take a lighter down bag, but the wool blanket is used as a mat for sitting on, another layer under a rain coat if it's really wet and cold and a wrap sitting around. Highly recommend to make one or there are some companies that make wool sleeping bag liners.
Hi Rune. That is a great idea. Nothing keeps you warm like wool! My secret weapon mid winter in a small alpaca wool blanket that is just big enough to roll around myself. I like your idea of making a wool sleeping bag liner. Merino wool fabric is very warm and soft but light weight. I might look at making myself a wool liner out of Merino for this winter. Thanks for the tip.
Awesome exerience Cathy. Thank you for sharing this chilly journey. You are truly one resilient, and very cheerful, camper. A huge thumbs up to all the effort you are putting into this channel.
Fantastic video. My first lightweight tarp & bivy setup just arrived so excited to try it out. Your enthusiasm when pitching the tarp is awesome. Thanks for walking us through your thought process with site selection and tarp configuration. Very helpful. Thanks!
"Blooming heck, it's a bit dicky" I'm dying here hahahahaha!! You're brightening an otherwise awful day!! That is a beautiful place. Ear scritches to sweet Indi.
Haha, that is great. I didn't cut it out as I knew someone would appreciate it. I hope your day continues to brighten! Indi knows how to enjoy the good life, she has moved off to find the afternoon sun. I will go and give her those ear scratches now and I can guarantee she will say "thanks".
Thank you. Yes, I was toying with the idea of a more closed in design myself, but in the end I decided on one that would allow me the most connection with the environment, whilst keeping me dry.
I love that you're excited about the first snow of autumn! Here in the Midwestern USA, we just got dumped with a spring snowstorm! Very little snow when we wanted it, I December/January, but it shows up in late March, after the crocuses and daffodils have started blooming!
Ha ha, I bet it is a bit funny to see someone getting so excited about something that you are quite ready to see the back of as you thaw out for summer. Snow really is a big deal here. I think if you did a poll of NZers you would find 80% had never been in the snow (just my estimate) as you only really get to it if you travel to a ski field in winter or if you are prepared to put your back pack on and climb up high, or live in one of our few towns that receive snow mid winter.
Hi again from Sacramento, California here in California, we do have black bears, mountain lions, snakes etc. But they absolutely do NOT scare me and I LOVE them. It is the humans that are dangerous and scary!!!
I would like to think I would be the same if I lived with those animals and grew up understanding them. On yes, humans, eeeek, so much less predictable.
Thank you. I know, that is the strange thing about the weather, it was all happy and settled, then blasting freezing air and snow, then back to its happy settled self again.
loved the video you are very honest and that's what makes you real. you are such a beautiful person and I love to watch your positive attitude . I am inspired just watching your tenacity to overcome problems. nothing seems to worry you. if i am ever stuck on a desert island and need to survive I hope it is with you.
Thank you. This made me smile. I am imagining us drifting on to the island and I'm like "oh this is so fun, I've always wanted the challenge of surviving on a deserted island" he he he.... until I realise there is no coffee. boo hoo, tears.
Thank you so much. That is one of the reasons I share these adventures, so that anyone, anywhere can get to see and hear and experience what I can. I have a bit of an idea of what South Louisiana is like but I'm going to Google it now out of curiosity for what you do see there, lol.
Thank you for another great adventure!! That’s awesome you got some snow too! Keep all your content and adventure coming. Please and thank you! -Liam 🇦🇺🤙🏿
Thanks Liam. It’s so nice to have people who genuinely appreciate the effort and enjoy the content. Happy to keep the videos coming when that is the case 😁
Hi Cathy, from here in the Netherlands. Yesterday I was admitted to hospital but your video also brightened my mood. Don’t get me wrong, I hate camping in the cold, but it’s so nice to see you being so positive and cheery. I can admire that. So keep going. You probably have bunch of people following you already. I was fun watching you and I’ll follow along too. Kind regards Norman
Nature has this powerful affect on us doesn't it! I am so glad my trip could help lift your mood at a time when I am sure you really need it. Thank you for following. I wish you all the best for your hospital admission.
BTW I had to google "tarn" and I had to watch you in this one again. Love your conversation with us. Don't know how you do it so well but you are better at it than any of the other outdoor "campers" I watch. Thank you so much.
ha ha, thanks James, that is very kind. Oh, and by the way, the auto captions on You Tube also don't know what a tarn is. They always put in anything except t.a.r.n. Makes me laugh.
Hallo Cathy wieder so ein tolles Video. Ich beneide dich, dass du die Möglichkeit hast in deinem Land auf diese Art und Weise die Natur zu genießen. Liebe Grüsse aus Deutschland
Thank you. Hopefully it is nice for others to know that things don't always work out the way you plan them to, but this is part of the thrill of the adventure, rather than some sort of failure.
I am so glad you came along Sandy, and that you enjoyed it. It is such a motivator when times are tough on a trip to know that there are people who will appreciate it.
One of the great things about RUclips is how different things are from one end of the world to the other. Your snow is just coming and ours is just leaving. I’m curious as to what animals might have been up there with you. When you were talking about your channel I kept seeing what looked like eyes glowing in the camera light. They would come and go. Enjoyed the video!
Oooh, exciting, I will have to play it back and see what that was. If it is reflective glowing eyes it is almost always possums. They come out at night and sit up in the trees, as you pass your torch light over them you see eyes glowing. I didn't hear or see evidence of Possums though. Loads and loads of deer prints in the snow the next morning though. Not right by my camp but near. And there was probably a mouse scuttling underneath me as I heard and felt something wriggle and scratch, eeeek. So really nothing scary, just interesting critters.
This is the first time I have watched your channel and I am very impressed. You did a great job with the tarp. It looked really well. I used to camp a lot years ago with my parents and siblings. Now I'm into the American Civil War and I have a period tent which works well along with a period, collapsible bed. Comfort lol. I signed up to your channel and looking forward to more videos. BTW I'm in Northern Ireland - half a world away from you 😂
Hello over there in Northern Ireland. I am intrigued about your tent. I had to Google American Civil War Period Tents. There are some really cool looking ones. Welcome to the channel. I hope you will enjoy it.
I loved this one. I did have a giggle at the tarp building you really make me laugh. I love the new Zealand mountains they are so beautiful. Sending love from Scotland x
I love viewing your videos Cathy. Your setups etc are super cozy. A little chuckle with the tarp setup in this video but you, as always, muscle through the process until you finally had the tarp pitched. Looking forward to viewing your future adventures outdoors. Blessings and hugs to you and Indy from your subscriber in Ohio, USA.
Hello over in Ohio. Thanks, yes that tarp had me a bit stumped for awhile. I'll be practicing the set up a few more times at home before the next attempt.
Another great video loved when it snowed , we are coming into summer over hear in the UK 🇬🇧 so once again we have not had any snow where I live in East Yorkshire, 2010 was the last time. Thanks again for your video,,,, Steve.
This was epic. What another beautiful spot. Both with and without the snow. Am having a lot of enjoyment working my way through your wonderful catalogue of videos featuring our .awesome country. Thank you for taking me and everyone else along.
Thank you so much. That is really encouraging to know.
I love watching you and Indie your dog when you are camping. I think you are fantastic at what you do and the scenery is beautiful
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing, I'm always thankful for the outdoor therapy, in-between getting out there for myself. When I first started watching I couldn't wait for a new video to come out, now I have to catch up, thanks for all the effort and time you put in, much appreciated.
It's so nice of you to say so, thank you!!
This is the example of practice for the field trip to insure it works when needed. Patience and perseverance.
Thank you Rich, that is very kind. Tony goes to some lovely places. We are very lucky in New Zealand.

Healthy trip, even for those who are only watching this video. Landscapes, athmosphere, ... nice.

Impressive, rugged terrain, bottom tropical and above the tree line snowy mountains 👍🏽
Yes you are so right, the Southern Alps in New Zealand have wet forest in the valleys but are rugged and unforgiving on the tops.
Thanks! Always such a pleasure watching you Cathy! You absolutely rock!!

Thanks for sharing the trip - like a fireside chat. Next best thing to enjoying the experience out there in that beautiful landscape myself.
Glad you enjoyed it Christine. That is what I am hoping, that people feel like they are almost there with me.
I Love ❤ Your dog cathy
Awwww thanks. She’s pretty cool 😎
My husband and I had a very warm goose down sleeping bag for two people so cozy lol 😊
Oooh that sounds cozy indeed!
"Create my own design" Wise words to live by. Thank you for showing how you problem solve when you camp. I do this too when I camp.
Yip, I think incorporating other people's ideas is great when it works, but ultimately you need to trust your own instincts, and who cares if it doesn't look pretty! Happy camping.
that tarp setup turned out just fine.
Thanks, yes it was a good set up in the end, once I stopped over thinking it, lol.

One of your best videos Cathy 👍
Thank you for saying so, that’s how I feel too 😊
Hello from Massachusetts. I particularly enjoyed seeing a new way to use my UCO Flatpack Grill.

Fantastic video. My first lightweight tarp & bivy setup just arrived so excited to try it out. Your enthusiasm when pitching the tarp is awesome. Thanks for walking us through your thought process with site selection and tarp configuration. Very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks Rod. That is exciting, I hope you will get great use out of your new gear and many exciting trips out.
Great video and keep up the good work. I would have gone for a much more closed tarp design.
Thank you. Yes, I was toying with the idea of a more closed in design myself, but in the end I decided on one that would allow me the most connection with the environment, whilst keeping me dry.
Amazing
Thank you so much.
Another awesome video, not one to back away from a challenge. It looked so stunning with the snow. Have a fab week🏕️🐾
Thank you! You too!
It is crazy how you were in shorts then freezing snow. Then back in shorts for return to car. Really enjoy you and Indy.
Thank you. I know, that is the strange thing about the weather, it was all happy and settled, then blasting freezing air and snow, then back to its happy settled self again.
Great video Cathy! The views were stunning! Crazy weather with you walking out with snow on the ground in shorts! Have a great weekend.
Thank you John. You too.
loved the video you are very honest and that's what makes you real. you are such a beautiful person and I love to watch your positive attitude .
WOW!!! Absolutely stunning, will never see the at here in south Louisiana. Thanks for letting me tag along!
Thank you so much. That is one of the reasons I share these adventures, so that anyone, anywhere can get to see and hear and experience what I can. I have a bit of an idea of what South Louisiana is like but I'm going to Google it now out of curiosity for what you do see there, lol.
Love your vtdeos, you are a brave woman you should be proud.Cheers from Ontario Canada.
Thank you very much!
❤Love watching your channel Cathy, have a wonderful evening 😊
Thank you Kimberley, you too!
Lovely trip…. I admire the way you adapt to the changing conditions….👍
Thank you so much!😊
Hi Cathy, from here in the Netherlands.
A great vlog and being honest with your set up your vlogs are enjoyable to watch stay safe in the bad weather
Thank you. Hopefully it is nice for others to know that things don't always work out the way you plan them to, but this is part of the thrill of the adventure, rather than some sort of failure.
A bit of ooze especially op shelf is very handy to have for warmth
As long as it’s just a bit, hey! 😂 🥃
I’m enjoying your adventure so much and for longer video I love it ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
Hello from Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. I very much enjoyed your trip. It was nice to tag along on your journey.
Thanks Jackie. I was laughing at myself too. It was a bit comical.
I'll be practicing the set up a few more times at home before the next attempt.
happy like a innocent child, haha.
Yes, that is how I felt.
Another great video loved when it snowed , we are coming into summer over hear in the UK 🇬🇧 so once again we have not had any snow where I live in East Yorkshire, 2010 was the last time. Thanks again for your video,,,, Steve.
You are so welcome Steve.
I love it. Keep them coming.
So glad you are enjoying the videos 🙂
