- Super Simple preservation idea for preserving your Brussel Sprouts.
I have decided I love Pickled vegetables both for their taste and convienence of processing time. In this video I show you how to pickle brussel sprouts with a quick and simple brine.
I look forward to being able to pull a jar of these off the pantry shelf and prepare as desired for a lovely side dish this fall and winter.
If you have tried pickled brussel sprouts leave a comment below and let me know what you think of them.

I’m loving all the preserving videos. I know it’s not everyone cup of tea but it’s all homesteading.
For the purest viewer audience
I love your canning videos. Keep 'em coming, lol. I'm the only one in my family who likes Brussel sprouts so pickling them is a great idea. Thank you❣
Your welcome 😊
Just came across this video cause i found really cheap brussel sprouts in my store. Never pickled anything before, but i will definatly try this with some weckpots i had for years. Thank you :)
I’m not much for Brussels sprouts, but I love your canning/cooking videos. And you look really nice in that sweater!
Love watching your canning videos👍
I'm glad, thank you
Everyone but my husband like Brussels sprouts. We like them roasted and I like them any way I get them. Enjoyed your preserving technique video. Thanks for sharing.
We love them roasted too but carmelized in a cast iron pan in some bacon grease with some syrup!!! Can't eat enough of them
I so wish we had a farmers market like that in our area. My husband is in that area frequently for work so I told him next time he's up there I need him to go to that market and rent a car to come home instead of flying so he can bring me lots of produce 😂
I love videos with waterbathcanning! Very easy, even for me :-) All the best from Norway
To happy you're enjoying them. Waterbath is definitely faster way to do things - but always follow the rules. You can't waterbath everything.
Thank you!!!!❤
Thamk you 👍👏👏👏💡
How much water and vinegar & pickling salt, thank you. I love all your videos🙏🏼♥️
What size jars did you use/
So I can pickle them, rinse when I am ready and prepared them roasted?
That's what I do
Gee Rachel, i cant seem to watch a video of yours without coming back at you with a question. I had no idea anyone cooked their pickled items after pickling them! Can I ask how you would use them in a meal...would you roast them? chuck them into a casserole meal? how vinegary do they taste when you do that? is it a taste you have to 'acquire'? Does recooking them/heating them up 'soften' the pickle flavour?
Thanks for sharing this video. I'm pickling brussel sprouts tonight.
Have you tried them since you pickled these? Any particular way you like them best?
Oh yes we love them carmelized and just as a cold side with dinner
@@1870s can you elaborate on how you caramelize them? This is completely different for me with brussel sprouts. I either roast them or boil them. I prefer boiled. I truly love b.s. and eat them often.
I used 2/3 kosher salt and Himalayan salt and thought they turned out well. What changes with pickling salt?
It’s same as a kosher salt, no iodine.
What procentage is the distilled vinegar
I noticed you placed competed jars in pot to reboil them. Is that last stage necessary? I made a couple of jars of jalapeno with same brine mixture and it lasted a year without it goin off. (The brine being a preservative yes?)
That's called Open kettle canning: involves heating the food to boiling, pouring it into the jars, applying lids, and allowing the heat of the jar to cause the lid to seal. Many years ago, it was commonly used for pickles, jams and jellies, and sometimes used for tomatoes and applesauce. We don't really use that method, because the USDA doesn't really consider it safe.
I've heard but don't know how true it is, so I hope you can answer for me. I was told if you take the first 2 layers off the sprouts they won't be bitter, is this true?
Ola! 😊 Have you ever done Okra?
no, we don't grow that here, we both don't really care for it.
ok its me again... can I can the frozen things... lol SO! do you see any reason I can't pickled the bags of frozen Brussel sprouts in my freezer? Even if the texture is a tad softer it would free up space and I love the idea of having yet another lovely veggie to present when the power goes out in winter. our favorite is roasted but my hubby would love another way to eat Brussel Sprouts!!!
Check out "Our Half Acre Homestead" channel. She has a lot of videos that will show you how to can from fresh and frozen.
You said it takes a long time to pressure can them... Just how long does it take to pressure can them? We pickled some too for the first time this year. We added all kinds of spices to the mix.
I just meant in general pressure canning takes longer, I honestly didn't even consider it or research a process for pressure canning brussel sprouts
@@1870s Oh, okay. lol
How did they turn out pickled? We just got a bunch & was debating between freezing or pickling.
Wonderful, we eat right out of the jar or skillet roast or bake
Is there some way to can Brussel sprouts without pickling them?
I'm sure you can just pressure can them in water, as you would carrots or green beans.
@@1870s That's what I thought. But when I looked at some state extension service websites, they said if you didn't want to pickle them, you should freeze them. Go figger.
what makes pickling salt different to other salts?
Iodine
Try fermenting next time. Just salt and water brine.
I have had much success with ferments yet, honestly they are still a bit intimidating
I just got some pickled Brussels and the inside was pink???
Yes they can turn color mine were a bit purple after pickling
That 1870's Homestead thanks!
have you made a video for cowboy candy jalepanos?
No I didn't 😬
I'll add it to the list for next canning season. All done this year
Unfortunately this link is not to the recipe that you used in your video this one has crushed red pepper and garlic in it which you used none of
You don't have to par boil them, especially since your brine is hot/boiling.
I found the best way to have Brussels sprouts is in trash. Just my opinion.
Celtic Bear I agree! 😄
No way!!!!
That 1870's Homestead lol!
lol I thought you said jelly beans instead of dilly beans lol
There are tons of bacteria in sinks. Almost as much as a toilet. It's sickening. So skip "cleaning" or soaking them in the sink. It's gross. Just get a bowl or plastic tub to do it in instead.
