I definitely think Sherlock is asexual. I'm asexual myself, and he checks pretty much every asexual box.
Also, we just don't have much (any, really) representation in fiction, and it would be really nice to see some *positive* representation of my orientation, for once.
Well done for pointing out that asexuality and aromanticism are not the same thing, by the way! I don't ship Sherlock with anything, and I mainly see him as aromantic asexual, but I could definitely see him as bi- or panromantic ace, as well (I'm panromantic, myself.)

Just for the record, I see this as a very likely interpretation too. I'm not Ace, but I have a few beloved people in my life who are. I think it's possible that Sherlock *might* have some romantic and/or sexual feelings for a number of people (in the original Doyle canon, the BBC version, and elsewhere) but I also think it's likely that those feelings are nearly irrelevant to his life and interests. I think that things of a sexual nature are usually far from his mind, and he'd feel that the whole thing is "dull." And I'm thrilled to see some asexual representation for a change.

I think that sherlock is asexual for the same reason that I am, because there are subject more important than sex in his mine. the sex distract him of what he really want to do. It's certainly related with the asperger syndrome, well I think it is. But for me he is not aromantic, I ship him with John.
These character is very important to me because he is the only one representation of asexuality and asperger that I know (maybe the doctor too for asexuality).

As an asexual, I'm quite puzzled that anyone could doubt that Sherlock is asexual. It seemed rather obvious to me from the beginning, but then I suppose it's easier to recognize your own and most people are largely ignorant of asexuality and the feelings of asexuals. From an inside perspective, I can say that Sherlock's explanations ("I'm married to my work") are the sorts of things you learn to say when you know someone won't understand if you just say, "I'm not and never have been interested in sex or romance." You learn to say socially acceptable things that will keep people from harping on about a subject you find supremely boring, and YOU might even believe the excuses. Because you look around and see that everyone else is so very interested in this thing, and you assume that everyone has the same "sex drive" you do. Since you can "ignore" it, you look for a reason why no one else can seem to. For Sherlock Holmes, this obviously must mean that you're far too clever, and ordinary folk let themselves be controlled by their own bodies and emotions. It plays right into his superiority complex, and as an added bonus is a convenient way to get wanna-be-matchmakers off your back.

Please.... no Johnlock. I love these characters since I was a little kid and I discovered the books of sherlock holmes in my family home. I fell in love with the characters and the stories. I loved the idea of a strong bond between Sherlock and Watson, the fact of Sherlock opening his arms and accepting Mary (Watson`s wife) in the same level he accepted Watson. I admired the fact that Sherlock could apreciate Irene`s mind and be curious about her without resulting in another F*** love interest. With the passing years, growing up as a writer I realiced how little the media was for people who didnt want a F sexual/Romantic relationship in every movie/book or Show. I am a Asexual (More Demi) and please, cant we just have this?. Sherlock from BBC have completely erasure the idea of Sherlock and Watson having a platonic relationship for most of the people. I just want to let those romantic feelings aside just for one character. Just one. Please.

just cos youre asexual doesnt mean you cant have a romantic attachment.....romance is not sex(something that some guys should get straight) and yes he IS asexual as he is played in the TV show. His response to the characters around him is not sexual other than in an observational way. He develops relationships, but not sexual ones. Both the biggest relationships in his life are due to different drives. his relationship with with John is derived from Johns loyalty, his skills as a doctor and his simple presence in his life as a friend and (semi) confidante. That with Irene is to do with her intelligence and wit. Neither are sexual in nature, tho romantic escalation is not impossible that doesnt mean sex.

I'm also an extreme Johnlock shipper as well, and I often get annoyed with shippers in general that are so smut driven that they forget that sex does not equal a relationship. In the very first episode of the BBC series, Watson and Sherlock have a conversation in a pub. The owner thinks Watson is Sherlock is his date. Sherlock says girlfriends are not his area of expertise. Then Sherlock thinks Watson is hitting on him. I just assumed from all this that Sherlock was gay but that as he says, “I’m married to my work.” That means he is celibate but not asexual. Sherlock finds human relationships daunting and chooses not to engage in romantic/sexual relations. That is very different from asexuality. A person doesn’t choose to be asexual but anyone can choose celibacy.

why are you mentioning irene adler's picture? probably, because adlock shipper's have that as the strongest proof, right? however, holmes only kept her picture because just as the rest of the cases he has, he keeps a memorabilia or a little something to remind him of a case he has solved. the irene adler thing just so happened that he had to keep her photo.

Demisexual is on the asexual spectrum, and I find this to be the closest to Sherlock's sexuality. Though, he is most definitely under the queer spectrum, which includes asexuality, homosexuality, more, and some in between. Demisexual is almost asexuality, but sexual attraction is only seen with people he has a strong bond with. (I.E.: JOHN WATSON!) The asexual spectrum is rarely seen in modern times, and to see it possibly being represented is delightful.

  • @crazykenna

The original stories were written so inconsistently you could really argue anything about Sherlock's character (sometimes he's reclusive, other times he's charismatic, etc.). I think this resulted from a carelessness on ACD's part, but it makes the subsequent interpretations varied and interesting even after all these years. In that sense, yeah, he's celibate, asexual, homosexual, heterosexual, demisexual, homoromantic, and also trans. He's whatever Gotham needs him to be.

He could be aesexual with an exception. I am like this. I am currently 20 years old and I have only ever had one crush on one person. And I liked him because I found him incredibly intelligent and creative. And at the time of having this crush, my English teacher (he freakin' shipped us it wasn't even subtle) decided that, as a project, he would have the students watch one episode of the BBC's Sherlock in class and analyze this very question. And that episode happened to be the one with Irene Adler, who seems to be, canonically, the only person Sherlock has had a clear romantic/sexual attraction to. I know many people ship Johnlock, but I always saw that as friendship and the creators confirmed it as such. Sherlock made an exception with Irene on the grounds of her intelligence. I found this relatable.

If we look at the time, marriage and romance really were completely unrelated. Sexuality in a marriage was necessary to some small decree, in order to produce offspring, but the expectations in that regard were really low. Holmes solitary life more is a sign of him avoiding company.
If we humor the theory that he is sexual, there are two easy ways he could get sex: he either has something secret going with Watson or he normally gets his needs cared for by prostitutes. Since we only really know much about how Holmes acts when his mind is busy with a case, it could be true. It also would make much sense that it wasn't mentioned in the books since Doyle uses Watson as the fictional author. Writing about your friends regular visits to prostitutes would ge beyond rude - and writing about your gay sex would be asking for an arrest. Even in the modern adaptations, it would be very inappropriate.
But really, with this argument, you could say that he had sex with horses. My assumption is that there is nothing until there are actual hints that there is something. That would make him asexual.

Excuse me miss, but if I may, I have 3 different ships that I'd like for you to talk about, please. 🙏
    1) Loki/The Scarlet Witch (Marvel comics/Marvel Cinematic Universe):
This ship especially took off after Avengers: Age of Ultron was released. I believe also large factor was a rumor that Elizabeth and Tom were indeed dating in real life (which they later denied). But other than that, both characters have an affinity for "mind games", with Loki being a master manipulator, and Wanda having the power to see and feel your emotions and/or thoughts. Plus, both of them have a great affinity for magic. Wanda and Loki are two characters that are frequently shipped with nearly ANY character they come into contact with (see: fandom bicycle), so I feel like this is only natural. As of right now, it's a fairly small, low key ship, without a verified name. (Plus, I'd like to point out that green and red are complementary colors.)
    2) Wolverine/Nightcrawler (Marvel comics):
Now, this is one that I REALLY love. The relationship between Logan and Kurt is just so...interesting. Interesting and important for both characters. The two are best friends, and often refer to one another as such. Which is a pretty big deal for the self-proclaimed-lone-wolf Wolverine. The two men hold extremely different moral codes and ways of viewing the world around them. And yet, instead of repelling, they balance each other. Kurt can calm Logan down, and make him self reflect on things that he would have gladly left untreated. Meanwhile, Logan can bring Kurt out of his own head when he worries too much, and give him a confidence boost when needed. Plus, they both love beer equally! This ship has a surprisingly solid fanabase, and goes by the name "logurt".
    3) Blossom Utonium/Dexter (The Powerpuff Girls/Dexter's Lab):
Within canon, this ship is pretty baseless. Considering the fact the two shows take place in separate universes, this is a ship with zero canon backing. But, there are 2 major factors leaving to this. The PPGD fancomic, and Fusionfall video game. Both of these were popular crossovers of various cartoon series and featured Blossom and Dexter as one of the main couples. And it's not too hard to see why. Both of them are highly intelligent, prideful redheads who idolize superheroes. They also both have blonde, pigtailed, ditzy sisters. It's a popular enough ship to rival Blossom/Brick, which may be Powerpuff girls most popular couple and. contains 2 canon characters.
It would be really nice of you if you could do even just one of these! 😆

There is actually another under rated Sexuality called Onanism: A sexuality in which a someones primary sexual practice is masturbation! It's origin is from the arena of a Masturbated Penis but has crossed over in genders as the term Virginity did from the haven't Vagina. If an Adult Male comes out as a Virgin He may either be coming Out as either Asexual or an Onanist. When coming out as an Onanist This may be a foreground reputation for Your sexuality with people who know You. The Religious practice of "Waiting for Marriage" or "The Right One" can be considered overrated. I think with the Picture of Irene being in a Negligee actually indicates He is a Masturbator not necessarily Asexual.

He will always try to rationalize and since love takes delight in screwing with reason he would have tried to distance himself from it all together. I think the only real love he knows to be true is that between himself and his work.

Why no Sheriarty ??? This ship does exist. Jim and Sherly have such chemistry. I also Ship Mystrade (Mycroft and Greg). I also ship Molly and Irene.

I don't think he's asexual, but he definitely seems to be the type who would suppress sexual desire. If anything, he would see it as a challenge.

In the past when Conan Doyle was in his heyday. Some characters were shown as Celibate .Do you think Celibate back then was code for asexual. Because people didn't understand Asexual?

He did used cocain and Morfin not Heroin and in the missing 3 quarter Watson has gotten Holmes sober. The Herion thing is very Amerikan.

I've nothing against the idea of Sherlock being asexual.
But I'd prefer it if he simply saw sex and relationships as the irrational distractions of reason
    that they are.
And since that's how he's basically described by Doyle, I think it's a fair assumption to
conclude that he's simply got more important matters to deal with than love.

I think he's somewhere between grey sexual and sapiosexual, because the only person he ever showed attraction to (sexual attraction) is Irene Adler, which is a very intelligent woman. And I can't help not talking about Sheriarty on this one, right..

I don't think Sherlock is asexual, but I do think he's demi-homoromantic and demi-homosexual. It fits very well with behavior, and most of the canon supports this notion. I also don't think that it's logical to headcanon people as a sexuality, gender, or anything for that matter just because you're desperate for representation. I'm not trying to dictate how people feel towards a character at all, this is just my opinion. Sherlock being perceived asexual is dated by stereotypes, misogyny, and homophobia in the era. I agree 110% with this video. He was celibate because of focus and a overall sign of strength and willpower, when it came to his cases at least.

Well i kinda see Sherlock as an Asexual or a demiromantic for the way he Is, but i think asexual Is way more probable couse Even the creators said "John Is straight and Sherlock Is asexual-ish" un an interview. I like more the idea of Sherlock being demiromantiac tho

He is a human figure - offcourse he is sexual - but a late bloomer. He does not have it in him to relate to other people's feelings - he has to learn that from other grown ups. it was not a part of his childhood. "Alone is all I have. Alone protects me" -
Watson is a Doctor, and as so attracted to people in need. Not sexually - but by heart. By the relationship with him Sherlock matures.
The two figures represent the heart and the brain of a man - the author. Therefor they cannot be parted, but there's certainly no sexual relation between the two. Not possible.

To me, he is not asexual. He doesn't have sex because he chooses it and doesn't understand the needed of it.
He is emotionally attached with some people, like John Watson (To me, their friendship is the most important thing to Sherlock, because he would be alone other way) or Irene Adler (More than romance, admiration).

Asexuals can be deeply emotionally connected to people. Being asexual doesn't mean lacking in emotional, or even romantic, connection. At the same time, a person can be heterosexual or homosexual and engage in sex and not be emotionally connected to their partner, too.
