I've watched your video several times and finally brought home a new kayak, loaded it up and took to the lake by myself. I feel so strong and independent! Can't thank you enough. I got a bath mat for the top and a rubber door mat for the ground.
Excellent video. Just bought a new kayak. Lots of kayaking up until 10 years ago. Now 77 years and doing it again😁. Unloaded by myself but wasn't sure about rear loading on my Subaru. You've showed me how. A million thanks for your detailed, informative video.😇
Im 61 and have a jeep grand cherokee so it’s pretty big and tall but it has a rack and my dad had a kayak he used for checking turle traps ..he passsed away several years ago and that kayak is up in the messanaie of his storage barn..its army green and I want to start doing some things fun…plus i love fishing and i could probably fish from it so im going to give it a try!
Run both ends of the strap over the kayak. The strap end laying flat along the car roof is sure to slap your roof repeatedly from wind on the highway. If you center the back end of your kayak to your roof rack before raising the front, it will be leaned up against your car straight and not be at risk of sliding off or needing the end of the crossbar that sticks out to hold it.
Thanks, your video is helpful. You may want to consider strapping it down differently. That strap across the top of your SUV can vibrate in the wind and wear away your clear coat and paint. There are several videos that show the strap wrapped around the rack and over the top of the kayak.
I am so fortunate that I came across with your brilliant technique. The “catcher” rubber mat makes the magic. I love the idea of using a beach towel to protect the vehicle as well. I have a 12-ft/100-pound fishing kayak, and this is the most practical method to mount it on top of my 4Runner. Well done and thumbs up! I can’t thank you enough! 🌷💕🛶🙏😎
New subscriber. Been looking for ways to be more active that i may enjoy. I saw some inflatable kayaks, but im to heavy to trust those.😂 i have to lose 200lbs. Long haul trucking life has taken its toll on me. Luckily outside of my weight and i need to stop cigarettes for good, but im in good health at 34,not on any medications thank God. Actually taking a year off of work to focus on weight loss. No kids for me to worry about yet anyway. GOD BLESS!!!
Good for you! Health is definitely the number 1 priority. And good health allows for more FUN! Best of luck to you on your 2024 health journey, and happy kayaking!
This is definitely a helpful video. I obviously need roof racks and not just cushions with straps. My 13' boat is pretty difficult to put on my roof alone but this technique with the right rack would be no problem. Thanks! I'm closer to being able to go out by myself.
Thank you so much for this video! I am going crazy trying to decide which roofbars, racks etc to buy. I wondered if you have foam pads on top of your crossbars? I guess they might help the stability and stop it sliding? I think I'll just get the basics and if it doesn't suit me progress from there. Thanks again for the encouragement.
Glad I could help! Yes, I do have the foam pads on top of my crossbars, and they are very helpful with stability, and also protect your kayak, surfboard, etc., from being scratched or damaged. Happy kayaking! 😊
Thanks for watching Cassandra! Glad you liked the video. My roof racks are Thule and they were installed by the dealership. It was many years ago, so unfortunately, I am unable to tell you the exact model but if you ask your dealership, or probably RUclips or google, I'm sure you could find a set that works best for you. Hope this helps, and good luck with your kayak search! If you end up with an oragami, please let me know how you like it. Those look pretty cool 😊
This is really good. Thank you for the included link for the rubber mat. I use a padded matt for gardeners to kneel on, but your matt idea is much better. Thank you.
I don't know I used to have a car that my kayak or just fit inside but now I don't and I'm about ready to give up because last weekend I tried to put it on my roof on my roof racks and I managed it but it was so heavy and it's just slid off to the side bang down onto the ground about three times and it was just a nightmare so you make it look easy but I don't know I guess I'll maybe try it again
Really great job. Sadly for me with my 2024 Subaru Outback, the roof rack doesn't have any part of the raft that juts out to catch. So I'm trying to figure this out. At this point. Think I will be leaving my doors open while I load to partially help me
@@ColleenMc-M213 check this out; hope it helps! Maybe just add a towel to prevent any scratches…? ruclips.net/video/Gnu8e9QFJls/видео.htmlsi=_SYBMzpSEqvqDQ-b
I would add if you have folding mirrors fold them in first . When the kayak does slip and fall it will take your mirror with it . A car mirror is from $ 100 to $800 depending on what you drive . I was lucky it was an older Ford truck and was able to find one at a wrecking yard for $65 . And for my 2024 Outback that mirrors do everything you can imagine , , , I don't even want to guess what that would cost .
Thank you so much, I'm kayak shopping so this was really helpful knowing I can load a kayak onto my Jeep Wrangler by myself. Can you please make more kayak videos🙏🏾
I use to have an ascend kayak, very nice heavy duty kayak but way to heavy to load and unload all the time weighing in at 67 pounds. I went with a pelicon sit on top for fishing that weights only 46 pounds.
Question is why you would transport your kayak with the bow facing the rear of the vehicle? Would you not want the bow to face the front to help cut the wind a bit better? This is a serious question... It would appear that the wider end (stern) would catch more wind and put more pressure on the straps you bind the kayak on the car with? Thanks for the video!
Great question! To be honest, I never even considered this, but I think your theory is very likely correct. The stern (back end) is indeed wider, and it makes sense that if the bow (front end) is facing forward, it will cut the wind better. I personally feel that it is easiest to handle the stern of my kayak while loading, and this results in the stern facing forward on top of my roof racks. I suppose once on top of the racks I could maneuver the kayak in the opposite direction, doing something like a 180 degree rotation...? However, I foresee this as being quite a bit trickier to do, and I honestly just found my technique as the easiest way to load this kayak solo. I think that as long as the straps are appropriately attached there shouldn't be any risk of the wind loosening them, and one can also apply bow and stern straps for additional security if desired. All of that being said, I think you can also save a bit on gas if you have the bow facing forward, so the next time I take out the kayak I'm going to try a different technique and see how it works out. If things go well I'll do an update. Thanks again for the great question, and of course for watching! 😊
@@misswandermusttravels640 thanks for the reply! I found you vid very informative and helped me. I am getting a little older and cannot lift the weight I used to when I was a younger lad. Appreciate the video and keep it up.

Just a reminder not to do this on a really windy day because the wind could catch your kayak and blow it off your roof rack, while you are stooping down to pick up the other end.

Ive seen some people use a bathroom mat instead of a towel on their car since the other side has a grippy rubber
Thank you for a no-nonsense tutorial. Rented kayaks for years and have finally bought one.

Those cross bars will dig into the plastic . You should be using some sort of saddle or load upside down
Good point. I actually have foam toppers on my cross bars but forgot to mention that in the video. Thanks for watching!
I load from the back. Your way looks easier. I'm going to give it a whirl. Thanks!

I think its better to flip the kayak up side down for more stability when transporting otherwise its wobbly.
