This game looks absolutely innovative and FANTASTIC (for the genre)!!! It reminds me of games like the open world Zepda games, and the first time I saw Rise. I'd absolutely love to play, and even watch playthroughs of this game. With more polishing and meaningful animations, it could really be something. I just want to know where I can find out more about the developers. The actual game development and care from the developers have become things that make me way more interested in games in recent times
I would say this is more like palworld than MH. It is true that it has gear making system like MH where you have to hunt for material to craft specific gears, but combat wise it is still lacking to be compared to MH. Not to mention that in MH a lot of environment features are there to create the ecology of the environment, whereas this game(like palworld/minecraft) most objects are present to serve a purpose (as anchor for tether or harvestable resource). it doesnt create the immersive experience as a hunter the MH do. On the plus side, there are cool features in this game that MH dont have. Like the tether system, making you able to travel with ease by interacting with the environment, and the aerial attack by using tether seems quite cool too. The glider system seems like they took inspiration from dauntless, makes travelling a lot less of a hassle , especially since this (i assume) is like a open world game where you would potentially need to travel extremely far to reach some objective. Cons wise, this game is still lacking in many aspects. Firstly, the most important part of a (hunting) game (if thats what they are trying to achieve) is its combat system, as it takes up most of the gameplay. There are so many things that are still unpolished in the combat system as shown, like weapon movesets that are more satisfying, monster AI, physics and hitboxing, the monster’s moveset. Mainly, there arent enough emphasis on the impact of the attacks, and the implication when the player gets hit. you kinda just run around, hit , run around again… if you get hit, you are knocked back, screen flashes , hp- , then you just get back up on the spot. it doesnt feel like monster combat, feels more like RPG farming. This brings me to the second point: RPG like features. Personally, the main reason I loves MH so much is because of its non-commital weapon system. All weapons have their unique movesets, and you get to use them as long as you are equipped with them. As seen in the video, the progress system uses XP and lvl for skill point, which gatelocks you from trying out the different weapons, as considerable amount of points needed to be invested to unlock the key movesets that makes a weapon fun. This results in lack of diversity at least in the early gameplay. Another thing to mention is the design of monsters. So far in the video, most monster have the few same general structure, sizes and attack. There is nothing that makes a monster unique, stand out from other monster. In MH, even Rathalos and Rathian, the 2 genders of the same species, have different appearance (color) and movement tendencies (rathalos like to fly and breathe fire while rathian like to run at you or use her poisonous tail). The monsters in this game feels more like mass produced replicas of one another, with slight modification and different habitats. There is not as much satisfaction in taking down a new monster and unlocking new gears, as they are all similar, just with stat tweaks that makes them harder to kill. This also makes hunting less of ‘hunting’ but more of ‘farming’ , like in most other RPGs (especially palworld). Lastly, the game being designed like minecraft and palworld, is unable to have a main story like MH do, this is done so that you can quit or remake a world any time, and not have to sit there watching the same cutscene 1000 times. But this also makes its immersion much lacking compared to the MH series. In MH, you are a hunter who is part of the ecology, and when something is wrong (unusual) , you start to investigate, dig deeper and (always) found out initially what had caused the irregularities in the ecology, you try to do something to preserve the environment in its previous state (hunting the ‘cause’) so that the environment return to its usual state where you are used to living in. But suddenly you realise you have faulted the wrong monster, and another guy is actually the culprit. then you try again to deal with the real culprit. In MH, althought the story always seem to use the same template, but in every section of the story, you are doing what you as a mere human in the great world can do to keep up with the changes, it is sensible and relatable, which greatly boosts its immersion. However, in this type of game (palworld like) you are simply doing things because you need certain components, or because the quest asked you to. There is no relation between you and your character, you are simply gaming. This makes the game’s missions more of a hassle and tasky as you are simply going out to harvest the amount of things you are asked to harvest. In conclusion, although it is true that the game isnt being fully showcased in such a short video, and the game is still in alpha, I think a game like this shouldnt be compared to the MH type of games, it is much much lacking in many aspects and its fundamental purpose of gaming is different. This isnt to say that I think this game is bad. Rather, this game has its uniqueness compared to other similar games like pal-world (like its MH-like crafting system and combat system, as well as the tether allowing for interesting ways of movement), and can still be massively improved throughout the development process. So the game definitely still has potential to be good, just need to be categorised correctly for more fair comparisons and judgement.
Finding the alternatives is quite fun. Wildhunt as a follow up to Toukiden is interesting. I still want to see Soul Sacrifice remastered or get a spiritual sequel. And for my personal janky physics of choice, I'll take Freedom Wars.
There's been MH competitors since the day of ps vita, like Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Freedom Wars. Neither of them able to capture the essence of hunting like MH did.
Wild Hearts is definitely a strong and innovative rival to Monster Hunter. As a MH fan of 20 years, I really hope that WH becomes a sibling series to MH. Keep Capcom on their toes.
I see the optimization issues from Steam Next Fest is still in the release version, what a shame I was really excited for this one too. Hopefully they keep working on it and save it.
These monster hunting games don't get what made Monster Hunter became successful. MH's combat animations have weight in it. MH's environment, the hub, and the hunting areas feel alive. MH's monster designs feels like they belong in a bigger ecological system. I know this is just an early alpha but this just looks like another Dauntless. And that game, no matter how many things they've added since launch, feels empty.
It’s crazy how many devs seem to not understand how much the animations sell the experience. Game looks very nice and has potential but the combat needs a complete overhaul.
Dauntless has its place. I have a disability so find MH games too difficult but Dauntless was manageable for me. Is it MH lite? Yes. Still fun though where MH is an exercise in frustration. I'm sad Dauntless doesn't have all the other wonderful features (the animation weight, the ecology, etc), but I understand - with a smaller audience they couldn't afford all those bits beyond the core "hunt monsters, craft gear" game loop.
Game is in alpha and still looks pretty decent. Game isn’t trying to copy monster hunter but instead taking inspiration from it, along with ark and such. I love MH, the whole series and I feel like this game could really have potential.
Played this at PAX East. It was interesting. A little clunky with the aerial mechanics on the show floor but had some promise. Hoping for some Monster Hunter meets Dark Cloud from it.
