- In this episode of Crime Stories we sat down with James Seymour and Leroy Smith. The first time they've met was in Brixton in 1993: James was then a policeman, and Leroy was a criminal involved with drugs and guns.
Leroy was stopped by James for a drug search, and fired a gun at him in return. Since then James has gone through rehabilitation over his injury, and Leroy has served 17 years in prison.
Today they meet to talk about James forgiving Leroy for what he's done, their friendship and the future.

After quite a few years, I still can’t believe it’s Lad Bible of all channels putting out such interesting content, some of the best conversations and stories on RUclips.
You can really see the anxiety/ptsd in James. It's heartbreaking to see how even though he survived he is suffering with that everyday.
Guarantee you that Leroy has 100x the amount of anxiety and PTSD than he does
I have SO MUCH respect for that officer. His ability to put himself in someone elses shoes is amazing. A lot of people dont have that in them. Even if they do someone shooting you when you arent trying to do the same thing to them is an unforgivable thing. I wouldnt have forgiven anyone for shooting me. You can tell that the officer is just a good person. I wish that man the best and damn this is a moving video right here. Good shit.

@@imnotavingthat6813when you see it as "it's their life or mine", I think that is a pretty human reaction. Not excusing it of course, but I think it's important to put yourself in those shoes, as the officer said. If you had experienced everything he had, you might have done the same

This is beautiful. I'm so happy James got an apology from Leroy and he understands how difficult Leroy's life was. It takes a very special person to forgive something of that magnitude.

That police officer is a big man with a big heart to be able to do this RESPECT see this is the side of police we dont see while we are criminals
Mad respect for both James and Leroy. It’s not easy to forgive yourself, and definitely not easy to forgive others. Sometimes darkness is all we know, but all we need is someone to shine the light so we know our path. Cheers to both.
I have a real problem with forgiving myself deep down, it can destroy a man on the inside and is extremely detrimental.

They’ve know and talked to each over for a long time, this isn’t their first meeting, Sean attwood interviews them both at one point a couple of years ago,,.
This is awesome, I feel so much for both of them, I am a retired Police officer of 30 years and for James to forgive Leroy and for them to be together doing this interview is fantastic, thankfully I was never subjected to violence like this, yes I was assaulted but never shot at.
BIG well done to Leroy in turning his life around, I take my hat off to you. Hopefully you will continue to stay in touch and help others out not to go down the criminal route. Thank you.

What an incredible story arc. Both these guys are humble and their friendship is a beautiful thing.
In the US he’d have spent life without parole or the death penalty. Goes to show there should be room for exceptions after all that time, and depending on the person
Yeah it’s crazy that he chose to go back to the UK to face a trial on a double attempt murder charge rather than stay in the US and do the time for drug trafficking. He would have got about 60 years on the drug charges alone.
Its refreshing to read this cause all i hear in my country is people shouting about harsher and longer punishment... which isnt going to change a damn thing
@@mack8488The type of 13% people we have here are a different breed of violent unlikes those in England. Look at the murder rates, and recidivism, burglary done by those in the 13%. It's rediculous.

I can honestly say this was so powerful to hear and watch, 100% respect to both men..
It is such an emotional video, such a powerful moment. It simply breaks my heart. James is obviously reliving the trauma so overwhelmingly and is also trying not to be bitter or induce any judgment against his past aggressor. At the same time, it has literally made me cry to feel how profoundly distraught Leroy is and how terribly he regrets having had this horrendous part in the story. In only a few minutes their lives took such dramatic turns. Both of them are hurting deeply through this process of finding closure, one asking for forgiveness, the other forgiving. It is a cathartic scene. At the same time, the compassion for both of them is almost painful. A huge wave of sadness drowns me thinking that there are still children out there who become victims of our merciless and ugly world only because they do not have the chance of having a family who truly cares about them and fights tooth and nail to protect them from deceptions and to raise them as strong kind people.
Eye contact a real problem for Leroy. Definitely feels guilt and regret.
I can't imagine how awkward their first meeting was along with building trust in one another, respect to them both for the forgiveness n acceptance along with Learoy turning his life around too🤔✌️

This is the type of thing that should be shared worldwide. It is incredible that both men have a meeting of the minds. Congratulations to them both for setting an example of human kindness following an abhorrent situation. It takes courage to do this!

I feel so sorry for that ex-policeman. At the end of the day he is a human being, doing a job that keeps us safer when we sleep at night, he didn't need to be shot! As for Leroy...sorry that you felt that you had to carry.

He absolutely didn't deserve to be shot, but even he is intelligent enough to understand it's a lot more nuanced than you're giving it credit for being. Because you're a sheltered child.

Respect to Leroy and the James. The same light shines behind all of our eyes. Two different lives with different stuggles, bought to friendship through forgiveness. Good people make bad decisions. When we die, and our life flashes before our eyes, we will be judged not by the decisions we have made.. but by the lessons that we have learned. Honesty, authenticity and truth towards others and ourselves (often a tricky task!) 👊👊👊
There's a saying that prison officers always said to me and others while I was in prison 5 times to try to make us not reoffend and not feel discarded by society : "there are no bad people in prison just people who made bad decisions", all of us are good in our heart we can all be forgiven and when you get out just take an extra minute to think before you make another decision cos the bad decision making is usually when you react too fast without thinking.....

What an amazing powerful story, and James bless him for his intelligent decision to forgive Leroy especially after reading his book etc, James is a gent 100% and in his own personal struggles Leroy has survived so much hardship, and the fact that James is recognising this, to me is the very definition of empathy, wow God bless both these strong men, yours sincerely another brother struggling and still fighting for help so I may be among those considered worthy of salvation and forgiveness from both the community and myself 🇮🇪🙏✊...

100% Buietifull ending to a tragic event respect to James for forgiving Leroy and respect to Leroy for turning up for this interview especially with his background. I was in Foster homes growing up and ended up in prison petty things I haven't been in trouble now for 16 years I have a Buietifull family children now and self employed job. Now and again I'll see this police officer in my local boozer, the one who arrested me about 50 times lol to be honest we have a great laugh and he's understanding of my past. Ps to alot of people out there please have respect for the police and other emergency services, they have families as well and are only doing there job some of them don't even make it home. Peace and love to everyone out there 🙏

Unfortunately the "ACAB" assholes don't care. They just blind hate whomever they are told to hate. They don't have minds of their own. But they have put all police in even more danger than it already was.
Thank the gods for the ability to reconcile like this. So many of us desperately want to forgive, to let go, but the person who has harmed us can't or won't allow this meeting and resolution. Its much harder to do it alone.

Both times you were just thinking about yourself. It is horrible for us law abiding people to know that such violent people are out in society with us. And it's even worse now. The crime is skyrocketing. It is not safe anywhere anymore. I carry my gun everywhere.

@@jamesmason1347 Yeah policeman is a decent guy definitely, and yeah Leroy definitely had/has some violent sociopathic tendencies, in perspective they are both just a product of their environments and upbringings. Leroy talks about already being wanted in Jamaica, I mean Jesus, Leroy has definitely experienced some different levels of violence to where shooting two policeman is normal.
If you know what Brixon, and especially the Atlantic pub was like back then (a centre of drug acivity in the area and a beacon for police surveillance) you wonder why the hell a prison escapee would go anywhere near the Atlantic.

@@Bencar34 I agree, and to enforce policy or political decisions you don't agree with or know are the wrong. Both my parents worked in the NHS their entire careers and when my Dad became a manager it nearly killed him. He asked for a step back and carried on working at ground level for the rest of his career and loved it. Same goes for my Mum who was a Special Care Baby Unit nurse and stayed at nursing level her whole career.
@@bikehubjapan That's a hard one to decipher. I was stabbed aged 14 in 1990 by a vile individual at school in a cooking class, I am 47 now, and the incident is starting to catch up with me. I was never spoken to about it, never offered counseling or anything, the police refused to do anything as they said "there was no malice involved". It traumatised my Dad who had to take the x-rays of my chest cavity to check for air bubbles before they could operate (twenty minutes lying on my side before they could x-ray whilst they waited for the air to rise). The lad that did it went onto set fire to a girls hair, the hairspray went up whoosh and he also gave her a black eye and got expelled. I later heard a rumour he went onto become a social worker. At the time and the years after it I was rather blazè about it. But now I am not sure if I am alright, whether I forgive and with no follow up care I am not sure what I make of it all now. Seeing comments like yours brings up feelings I don't know how to deal with. One thing I have always thought about in my life is how much of a massive subject forgiveness really is. What it means and how the person you are forgiving should perceive it etc. But with me I have never had the chance to receive an apology or give any forgiveness. Thought provoking reply. Thanks in the nicest possible way. I am ok but I would say more and more the subject of my stabbing has become thought provoking.

Well, that was better than I expected. At the end of the day, men can always bury the hatchet. I'm happy that he managed to reform and change his ways. They shared a moment in history. It was momentous for both of them for different reasons. As they got older and grew as people, they realised that moment in time they shared actually give them something in common and brought them together. It was traumatic for both people ,they were just different sides of the same coin. Peace ✌️

I am not sure if I could do what the officer did. Big respect. Looking at Leroy, I really believe him, I genuinly think he completely changed. I am normally pretty ruthless when it comes to criminals but I do think Leroy deserves this normal life and 2nd chance.

But Leroy intentionally tried to murder 2 people and was a violent criminal in every country he lived in. I hope, for societies sake, that he really did change. It is honestly terrifying that there are thousands of people out there like that. Just murdering, assaulting, raping, burglarizing, etc. People who cannot respect others should not be in society. We deserve safety.
