Buckethead - Big Sur Moon (cover)

  • My cover of Big Sur Moon, the studio version. Played at 150 BPM, all up-picked. Not quite at Buckethead speed (studio recording seems to be about 160 BPM), but the closest I could get.
    I also tried to match the panning effect as close as possible (make sure to listen in stereo). I split out Buckethead's original recording into separate left and right tracks and noticed that when the guitar moves to one channel, there is still reverb coming through the other channel. So I applied the reverb on a separate stereo track and kept it fixed at center pan, and then automated the panning of only the dry track.
    Gear:
    - Ibanez RG 2550
    - Axe FX II (FW Q 5.03); Vox AC 30 amp model

      as beautiful as this was, and it was, it wasnt perfect. Buckethead is a unique player when it comes to all styles of music. In this particular song he utilized his palm muting technique where if you listen to the recording he not only mutes some notes but changes up how hard he picks the strings as well as loosening his hand when running up to the higher notes giving them a more open sound. This cover was perfect in terms of notes, but not in terms of color and expression, which makes it almost impossible to emulate buckethead because of how much experience and diversity he has. Thank you for coming to my ted talk lol

      Thanks. Aside from delay and reverb, the tone is just coming from the Vox AC 30 TB amp model on the Axe FX II. I have the gain about half way on the amp model. I'm pretty sure I recorded it using the single coil middle pickup on my RG, which has a cleaner, brighter, snappier sound.

    • @mcfarljm
      @mcfarljm  7 лет назад +11

      By all accounts I've heard, Buckethead plays it with up-picks. People will say that gives a different sound, but I'm not convinced. I mostly tried to learn it that way as a challenge (for me, after getting used to it, it's not really that much harder than playing with down-picks), but I also think maybe it looks cooler.

    Im newbie to guitar btw If u couldn’t tell ..wow
    Yours Sounds like perfection btw

    • @mcfarljm
      @mcfarljm  7 месяцев назад

      The delay effect will make it sound like there are twice as many notes as you're actually playing. You need to start first by learning to play in sync with the dotted eighth delay. Best way to learn this is with a metronome. Start without using the delay. Set your metronome to 150 bpm and play eight notes (two notes for every beat). Get comfortable with how that feels. Then you can add in the delay. If you play at 150 bpm, then you need to set the delay to 300 ms. Adjust the mix of the delay so that the volume of the repeat is roughly the same as the volume of the original. On mine, this was a mix of 49%. Try to adjust the feedback of the delay so that you just hear one repeat. Once that is dialed in, turn on the delay but continue to use the metronome. Using the metronome is important because you need to play in time for the dotted eight delay effect to work. When you play in time with the delay, it will feel like you're "locked in".

    • @mcfarljm
      @mcfarljm  6 лет назад +7

      I used the "digital mono" delay from the Axe FX, but I think most delay pedals would work. It's a dotted eighth note delay, and if your delay unit lets you synch it to the tempo, it makes it easy to practice with a metronome and build up speed. At 150bpm, the delay time is 300ms. Basically you want 1 repeat that is the same volume as the original, and that's about all there is to it.
