How can you describe him as a role model? I'm an angler myself and he is treating fish like shit, lots of his fish or pet fish die because of his poor knowledge of how to handle or treat fish. He is killing nice fish because he doesn't know how to fish properly. I'm pretty sure they didn't die because of a lightning strike, they died because fish like this should never be put in such a small pool? Who thinks that this would work? And even if the lightning killed his air pump for the fish pool, I would check things when a storm like this would have happened. He is just abusing these fish and selling the story as the great saver.

If you decide to keep fish again put everything on solar power with a battery bank big enough for the pumps/filers to run for 72hrs. There's always going to be the risk of electric shock from lightning but that would take out some of the variables 🤷♂️

I know pacu are supposed to be killed, but he is always getting his "pets" killed. I'm all for fishing and eating fish, but removing them from home and sticking them in a bad situation just to die...... I don't agree with.

I would imagine that utilizing lightning rods in that area would be in order and the way to go. There is something about lightning and Florida that seem to go together. Especially flash storms during the summer.

Zac, my guy. U need a solar powered backup solution for those big pools. I know it might not be a day or two long lifespan, but at the very least give you overnight protection to find a big solution for them. I feel for you man. I am a fish guy through and through, but harnessing that FL sun rays might help.
You should get a few solor pumps to run on top of the regular ones. That way you have some fresh water which wont work for a long period but long enough for you to repair anything.

zac you need to get a back up gas generator with an automatic transfer switch, that way when power goes out for any reason the generator will turn its self on. that will stop that problem
build an enclosure in the middle of the pond in your back yard. Wont need a pump. basically a under water cage with an open top. you could build a pier aroung the cage

I have to deal with ponds like this myself and replacing fish is not cheap and it's stressful when you put so much time into you're fish and pond that's why I always come up with back up plans for this occasion. Id get solor pumps or just get a solor setup just for the pumps or the whole house. A few panels and a small bank. The charge controller will kick on and off and send electric back into the grid when the batteries are full and it will lower your bill plus if the power goes out it will be self-sufficient. Not to mention the tax rite off.

This sucks my only suggestion would be a little larger panel so you can have a surge arrester on the panel as well. So if lightning hits it it'll take out the surge first.

I had this happen to my koi pond about 12 years ago in Illinois, lost some beautiful fish I'd had for several years 😔
