    While the One piece anime has a ton of issues and reading the manga is basically the best way to experience the story imo, one thing I really think Merphy may have missed by not watching the anime is getting emotional attached to the soundtrack.
    Like, everytime I hear We are or a remixed version of it in the anime, I usually get this intense wave of emotions due to how iconic it is.

    The WCI 'Sanji leaving Luffy' scene is the most I've ever cried for the anime adaptation of One Piece 😭😭 The way the carriage is moving off into the distance while Luffy is still screaming at Sanji to "make sure you come back". Sanji, while trying not to show it, is crying his heart out at the friend he's leaving behind. And the ost is such perfect choice too!

  • @fenris5932
    @fenris5932 7 месяцев назад +169

    The entire scene of Luffy finishing off Lucci with Jet Gatling for the first time is probably my favorite attack in all of anime. Everything about it hits for me. The leadup of Luffy stumbling forward and spewing blood, the flashbacks to Robin, Luffy's face when Lucci turns around to see him, his arms just disappearing for the windup, the wall of fists hitting Lucci, the birds eye view shot that makes it look like anti-aircraft rounds are just being launched rapidfire at Lucci, and Mayumi Tanaka's scream as Luffy obliterates the wall behind Lucci. *chef's kiss*

    • @darknesswave100
      @darknesswave100 7 месяцев назад +10

      The slow motion effect of the fists hitting Lucci all at once was just incredible to me. It really showed just how fast he was throwing those punches when you could see 5 or 6 of them hitting him at the same time. Then the sonic boom effects and his arms disappearing. Same thing happened in his fight with Blueno when he used jet pistol. Speed feats have always been my favorite type of thing in anime

    Most people I talk to tends to say the Ace dying moment as their most heart wrenching memory of the one piece anime but for me it's the scene where Dadan confronts Garp afterwards. When I eventually watch it for the hundredth time I will still bawl my eys out. Everyone is caught up in the recency bias highlighting Kuma when it comes to one piece parents but if I'd describe my feelings going through that it'd be a slow clawing on my heart whilst with Dadan it was more like an insta-kill ripping my heart out.

    When talking about emotional One Piece moments we mostly talk about sad-emotional moments, but one of my favorite stretches of One Piece are episodes 962-969 - about Oden's journey with Whitebeard and Roger. Especially the ending of the episode 968 where Roger's Pirates reach last island is very happy-emotional, ampilified by great music in the anime.

    I think the anime elevates the material. The anime fleshes things out and gives moments time to breathe so we can get more emotionally invested, aided in no small part by the amazing voice acting from the Japanese cast and that gorgeous orchestral score. Take Zoro's backstory for example. The manga squeezes it in while he's tied up in the yard. The anime gives it a full episode, filled with cute, funny, and endearing interactions. Zoro attempting Dojo-Challenging, cramming as many wooden swords as he can into his hands and mouth, dropping them each time he bows. Watching his rage and trauma-filled training, it's all so much more impactful.

    15:38 the Anime do this because of the Japanese hierarchy society structure, basically all big Corps like Toei are headed by very old somewhat traditional men who (in this particular case) has it stuck mind that Shonen is for 14 year old boys and 14 year old boys like giant boobs so the Anime should enlarge all boobs and also hyper focus on them whenever possible.

    Every time I see it I get choked up with...happiness? Nostalgia? I'm not sure. The One Piece was this thing we had been wandering about for almost 20 actual years and here are the guys that found it, and rather than be amazed or astonished, all these hardened pirates were rolling around laughing. And the use of the old ending theme really sends it over the top.

    If you’re interested in anime, there are some really good ones which were not adapted from manga. A couple examples would be Steins;Gate which is a sci-fi series with elements of suspense and thriller mixed in, cowboy bebop which you’ve probably heard of by now, space dandy which is pretty much just cowboy bebop with a heavier focus on comedy, anohana which is a supernatural drama, and angel beats which is a supernatural drama/comedy. All of these are pretty easy to get into (with the possible exception of Steins;Gate because the first episode is kinda confusing)

    I’m so glad you mentioned that Luffy/Franky Fishman Island scene! The first time I saw that I had to pause the show because I couldn’t stop laughing. Even just thinking about it now cracks me up. Also the Nami scene is some of the best acting in the show. And I’m sure you’ve seen them already but the voice actor for Luffy puts in some amazing performances during the brutal moments in the Summit War saga.

    Honestly is someone made just like a 3 hour long playlist of all of these scenes i'd watch it. it would be a roller coaster of emotions but still probably the best one piece movie

    There is an anime original scene which you didn't mention so I want to recommend it: During the Zou arc, they have Brook sing a song about Nekomamushi while they're heading to meet him. If you just search for "Brook Nekomamushi song" on RUclips, you will find the clip. It's fun. It's a song that the voice actor for Brook wrote himself.

    I’m so glad you love this series as much as you do Merphy, idk why but it almost validates how I’ve felt about One Piece for a long time. One piece will always be great in my eyes no matter what others think but you enjoying it also validates that feeling for me.

    I agree with u regarding that Nami scene.....I love Robin's "I want to live!" but the whole build up of frustration and hopelessness from Nami leading into her just breaking down and asking Luffy "Help me"...Nami's voice actress nailed it to perfection. Nothing tops that scene for me to this day, it's just something really special

    When I first got into One Piece I got so obsessed that after catching up to the manga, I watched every single anime episode and movie that was out at the time. While I loved it plenty just based off the manga, hearing Robin scream "I wanna live" and the Merry thanking the crew made those scenes etch into the center of my brain. I can just think about them and start crying.

    Some of my favourite scenes are Brook laughing at Sanji and Duval's resemblance, the toys turning back in Dressrosa and Luffy ringing the golden bell in Jaya.

    Some (earlier) scenes that I think are amplified in the anime: Crocodile putting his hook through luffy and the music cutting and croc saying: "who do you think I am." and also later when Luffy beats croc and Dvorjak's - Into the new world plays. A lot of funny scenes (like brook losing it laughing after finding out who Duval is, and basically all Nami's scenes on Jaya :P). Also Nami on Water 7 telling luffy (who's stuck in between two buildings) about how Robin is planning to die to save them is such great voice acting. Also Sogeking's theme song adds a lot to his scenes on the train to Enies Lobby 😂

    Less about the animation and more about the sound design, but the buildup of the drums just before the Gear 5 reveal was absolutely phenomenal. Say what you will about how Gear 5 itself was adapted, but the way that previous episode ended was incredible.

    one of my favourite law scenes in the anime by far is I think just before dressrosa when law tells the straw hats they have to make a plan or some such and they all just turn around and announce what food they want instead and law gets swept up in it and shouts about not eating bread and makes the funniest face ever like 'did I just say that?' Its been too long since I watched the anime but there are a lot of great small scenes like that, that stick in your mind for a long time.

    The scene where luffy finally enters the rooftop of onigashima to see the scabbards all near death, and the way he just walks past the fucking EMPERORS in a flash to get to his friends. The lighting and the voice acting and the somber, defeated tone contrasted to luffy just absolutely punching the daylights out of Kaido as payback is just beautiful. The scene still gets me to this day. That one scene absolutely elevates the source material to a higher level and it’s one of my favorites.

    It's not just the differences between mediums - it's what we can possibly gain/extrapolate in experiencing each. (imo)
    ok, dang, man...if merphy is dipping a little into anime now?? i gotta get off of my butt & do the same, as i have been telling myself to do for the past 3 or so (hell, 11) years.
    16:37 like, no sirree - it's actually clear to me now. you just exemplified to me exactly what i need to be doing with my life this whole time - i've been wanting to analyze both media formats at once & get everything i can possibly grasp from them & convey this stuff back into the world. this is my actual, unbridled passion i say. Awesome video.

    To me, for the most part, the flashbacks/backstories hit so much harder in the anime than the manga. And I don't know if it's the voice acting or music or combination of a bunch of stuff but damn I do be tearing up and get so hella hyped when an epic moment goes down like the walk to Arlong Park oh man so many memories there lol

    My favorite scene in the anime is the one at the end of enies lobby when the straw hats all jumped into the sea, to the marines it looked like the pirates have lost their minds, but then we hear Merrys voice, "Let's go back to the sea of adventure", and the sign of friendship theme plays. Peak fiction

    Huh, Merphy's getting into the anime? Nice!
    Every so often, the anime will blow me away. Like the Luffy vs. Usopp argument & fight (Ep 235 - 236), or in Skypeia where they are dancing around the campfire, scenes like that are just incredible.
    If you haven't, someone should share some clips from the Filler G-8 Arc! I think you'd get a kick out of Condoriano.
