From Champions to Collapse in 8 Months: What’s Wrong with AC Milan?

- AC Milan pulled themselves out of their banter era by winning their first Scudetto in 11 years back in May of 2022. But 8 months later, and AC Milan look a shadow of their former selves. AC Milan cannot defend, and with Tatarusanu in goal, it is easy pickings for their opponents. But on top of that, AC Milan’s change of ownership late in the transfer window meant that they wouldn’t recruit as many players as their direct rivals, despite being the champions, and now the cracks are showing.
Why are AC Milan struggling so much? What’s wrong with AC Milan’s defence?

What happened to AC Milan? - Спорт
A win today (Torino) with the 3-5-2 (3-4-2-1) Martino mentioned as hope for the future.
Yup. I believe this is the formation that's going to bring you back to the topic of AC Milan in the near future. FORZA MILAN. FORZA RTV!!
@@SkunkMonk because doing worse than this is difficult
@@trickfinger3888 don't underestimate pioli.. he will do much worse if challenged.

To call that a _"collapse"_ is a a little overstated. I mean, Napoli is going to win the Serie A, if nothing goes very wrong anyway. So the goal of the season by now should be to qualify for the UCL again and give a good performance in the second leg against Tottenham.

Milan's current form definitely has to do with the lack of form and injuries to the leaders that helped our squad stay motivated. We lost Romagnoli, Ibrahimovic is just now returning to training, Maignan got injured, Kjaer doesn't seem like he's back to 100% after his long term injury, Giroud and Theo are in dire need of a rest week (played World Cup final Dec 18, got something like 2 weeks of rest, then immediately upon returning to Milan, both started against Salernitana on Jan 4 and have played in most matches since), and Calabria is just out of form (he is relatively young and probably isn't fully ready to be Milan's captain, to be honest). Our younger players that really established themselves last season (Kalulu, Tonali, Leao, etc) lack that leadership that led them to the title last season. However, if we look at Pioli's "life cycle" as a manager to date, this follows. He gets his team's squad to perform super well for a period of time before a fallout. Look at Fiorentina's standings in the Serie A when he joined them in the 2017-18 season and their standings the season after, when he was sacked a few months before the end of the season. I still hope he can turn this around though, else Milan could be in another Banter Era.
For now _(it will probably change today)_ they rank place three in Serie A and won the first round in the Champions League.

Serie A has become very competitive again. I didn't expect Milan to just defend the title.
Argentina winning the World Cup and Napoli playing a hell of a season...Maradona would've been a very happy man in 22/23.
Right now qualifying for Champions League would be a success, more so if they get to the Quarterfinals of CL
Finally somebody talks about milan.
They just won in champions league yesterday.
Loved being back on, Adrian!
You killed it man, thanks for your help.
Loved the atmospheric intro this time!
We have Adli, Lazetic, Thiaw, Vrancx that are ready. Just play them. Especially Adli. He showed good progress and played good in France last season. Playing Benna and Tonali without 1 other support in the middle will leave them a big hole exposed.
Any follow-up thoughts now that Thiaw started playing, immediately layed down several straight MOTM and saved our season. Lol.
Adli should be converted to Kostic type wingback, he can surprise us
As a Liverpool fan, it comforts me a little that we’re not alone 😩
You're a content machine man, Jesus, keep that grind up
I'm not a active watcher of Italian football mostly because of Juventus having a headlock on the division since 2012, and seeing AC Milan winning the league last season was really nice to see. Such a historic club. Same with Napoli potentially running away with it this season.
It’s simple. Because Zlatan Ibrahimovic is Injured. He’s clear of Cr7. He is the 🦁 of Football.
I'm a Milan fan and this will be a long ramble
Tata is bad but everyone knows that, so shouldn't we try to involve him less in games. He has been scapegoat for our lack of fire across the squad. He's doesn't comes out at all like he's stuck with glue so defenders should clear the balls asap instead of hoping that he'll come out.
We lost kessie and roman in defence and didn't get any good replacement of that quality. Kessie was very physical which helped breaking down opponents counter and also in retaining possession under press. He was necessary box to box as he would help in overloading opponents box when there was space.
We didn't lost anyone in attack but we lost 2 defensive players.
CDK has no confidence and that's why despite getting in good situations he doesn't trust his decision.
Our left side is precious and we can't lose leao Theo or tonali so we have to have them at their best. Renew leao and start him if we can.
Adli is good passer and should be given some game time
Vrancx is versatile and he has shown quality in limited game time.
Thiaw should start more often with tomori or kjaer with kaluli of left back.
Salemakers doesn't has physicality of defender so maybe train him for left winger position
Rebic was beast and after injury I can't see what he's doing. Messias always gets in dangerous areas but his final ball isn't effective.
Calabria is ok and gets beaten too frequently again decent dribblers with pace.
Maignan was my MVP last season and we need him more than anyone else.
We lack depth at left back, and although Theo stays injury free he gets tired too this alongside lack of motivation is a dangerous combo.
Bennacer hasn't been consistent and his set pieces are as bad as our set piece defending.
Giroud is still our best striker and origi has shown a few sparks insted of fire.
Zlatan was integral to keep morale and he has pushed leao to excellence so his return can be instrumental.
We should focus on top4 security and put up a good game against spurs.
Pioli needs to figure this out.
FORZA MILAN 🔴⚫
Thanks for the post and insight - much appreciated. I agree, I hope Pioli resolves these issues!
as a romanian, sorry for Tata, with the kind of form he's in rn I wouldn't even want him back in the national team and we're pretty much shit across the board, hope Maignan recovers fast cuz if not, you're in for a world of pain until the end of the season
@@andreitv9921 pioli has finally made tactical tweaks for Tata like we defend very deep even in free-kicks from far out. Our defenders have finally stepped up are looking better day by day. But yeah we're one troughball away from conceding on counter, if opponents have pacy players. Hoping for Mike's recovery.
FORZA MILAN 🔴⚫
@@devaughnjay he did make some tactical chages and is using different formation. So now we have 2 straight clean sheets with one against spurs. Forza Milan 🔴⚫
Cries in Braga-Benfica... no new player can compete with VAR from Porto.
Let's be honest, the stars were aligned last year for Milan to win the Serie A. Like, it's a "do it 100 times, 99 of them you would fail" thing. Not to diminish their feat, luck alone isn't enough, luck can matter in deciding if you're first or second or third but luck isn't the thing that makes you be "up there" to begin with, you have to be good to be there to begin with. But as a "neutral" Serie A fan (I'm a Bologna fan, mid-table squad that can only "dream" of a Europa league placement at best) it was crazy how everything that could possibly be in their favour, was. From injuries of their rivals, to THEIR relative lack of injuries, to some favourable referee choices (not "outrageous" and unfair, just 'could be yes or could be no' episodes that were mostly a yes for them), to Inter committing suicide against Bologna(❤️💙) with a crazy Radu fail on top of that.
I think they're the same team, with last year being the luckiest it could be, and this year being the unluckiest it could be. If they had "average" seasons, they'd be second/third in both of them. Winning Serie A made the fans dream without considering if they won because they were the best, or because they were a good team on a lucky streak. Maignan being out for Tatarusanu in his place certainly doesn't help.
Milan were not lucky last season. Maignan has been injured all season and giroud is not the same being a year older. What cost milan this season were their summer transfers who have all been flops.
Don't know what serie a you were watching last season but some of the things you're saying here are completly false. Injury wise last season we had as many if not even more injuries than in this one. Maignan missed a lot of games as well, Kjaer ACL, Tomori knee injury, Giroud and Zlatan constantly injured, Kessie and Bennacer went to afcon etc. Maybe we were lucky in some games but we also had really unlucky ones like the spezia and napoli last minute disallowed goals. Inter on the other hand didn;t have close to this many injuries lmao.
You don't win scudetto with mostly luck. We had determination to do something. Luck while was the factor but a lot smaller one than you make it out to be. I wasn't as worried of inter as of Napoli and when oshimen got injured I knew we would win
This guy, what are you talking about
Milan were 5 points ahead at feb last year, best points head to head againts 7 top league table, if you brag inter lost to bologna, at the same month milan drew 2 times, that inter-bologna doesnt mean that much LOL
As a rossonero I appreciate the video
giroud brought the chelsea luck with him. from champions to mediocre in under 12 months, only difference being the insane investment of the blues
Came from the Osasuna video. Wonderful content man, keep it going!!
It’s a dire indictment of the disparity of money in football that AC Milan - the reigning champions of Serie A and one of the most historic clubs in the world - couldn’t compete with a Newcastle side that were inches away from relegation less than 12 months ago to sign a player.
Team has become fatigue, lack of playing young players. No recruitment in Transfer window. Same thing LFC facing. Hope Milan turn around.
Always nice to see Martino
Banger After Banger After Banger seriously great content i enjoy si much waching Your videos
You guys can laugh at me but Milan should sign Harry Maguire in the summer. He's really good aerially also on the ball if he gets his confidence back his lack of pace can be easily compensated. English defenders seem to thrive in Serie A look at Tomori, Smalling, Young two of them were considered a joke in PL
I will laugh at you for two reasons- one its spelt serie A and secondly milan play a high line and maguire is terrible at playing a high line. Ashley young became "good" again due to antonio conte who did the same with victor moses.
I'd suggest to you to stop playing fifa so much.
lol tomori, smiling, and young were good footballers. Maguire has never been good
He is not a good long-term solution. Yes, he can clear and compete in physical challenges and is otherwise mediocre. He is not a good value for his money if he goes above 40 mil, and isn't a good investment. Securing him on a loan in unlikely since he is a rotation player for a probable top 4 team, that will be overloaded with cl and other cups. In vacuum, he is ok, but for their need to rebuild, they need to scout and get someone more obscure after tons of inspection.
@@ishaanhall78 you clearly have only watched his mistake compilations/reels lol
@@Micfri300 As i said "if" his terrible pace can be compensated like stones does in England games he can be good signing.
Also i don't have time to play FIFA i prefer to watch full games rather than compilations of mistakes
Watching this video before AC Milan vs Torino FC later today 😉
Beautiful intro man, loved it
What hurts about this video, is the "pioli's NOT on fire " slide. Just hurts to see the polar opposite what we milanisti were chanting just 10 months ago. And youre right about it too.. great video.
Fix the graphic at around 9:30 which is comparing goals against from last year to this year. For both totals it says 21-22.
Klopp is making the same mistake with Pioli, trusting the old guard that is floundering every week rather than giving other player the opportunity
To be fair, Milan was second until xmas. If napoli wasnt 1 million points ahead, Milan wouldn’t have given up like this in the 2nd half of the season.
Great waltz music

😱 holy crap, im a ac Milan support i never knew we got sold
I saw no news about it, or maybe I forgot wtf
Losing Maignan was pretty big
Ayo... is that a River Plate shirt? My guy is a millo at heart!
I agree with mostly everything Martino said. But a couple of notes:
The benching of Leao I kind of understand as part of a tactical choice in terms of formation and play style. Leao's only use is going forward and that clearly wasn't the plan in the first half of the derby. It was kind of embarrassing to witness but it's somewhat obvious that Pioli went into the derby with only one thing in mind: reinstating some semblence of defensive solidity and confidence. There was no intent in attacking whatsoever. I mean Milan weren't even trying.
The spending problem has indeed been influenced by the takeover, but it's mainly about a continuous effort to instill financial sustainability that started when Elliott management took over. And although the players they brought in seem to have not be working so far (for various reasons), it's been a trend in this new Milan era that new young signings have needed at least a season to truly get going. However I still think that the lack of the use of Vrannkx and Thiaw is not justifiable.
The new owners are the main problem. They just don't want to spend
30m on de ketelare is what exactly..
@@Micfri300 30 mil is nothing nowadays
@@Micfri300 that wasn't from the new owners (detailed in this video), rather from winnings from champions league qualification and winning the title (about 50 million euros total)
@@beep90 the new owners wanted de ketelare. Elliott wouldn't have sanctioned the deal actually
@@teukka623 stop playing fifa.
In my opinion the only reason is Mike Maignan. This is the difference between a world class keeper and an average one. Lille colapsed after Maignan left...
in all honestly, we’re not that good of a squad. we played good collectively & had great individual performances to save us, but the stars aligned for the scudetto, all the teams around us were struggling as well. with this year, the lack of reinforcements is the main problem. pioli’s system has been figured out without much tweaking and our best players aren’t able to save us as much as last year, plus inter seemed to regain their footing somewhat and napoli is in a league of their own.
all in all, we should still finish top four hopefully but changes must be made. get origi far away from this team. CDK needs minutes, pioli needs to work on his in game adjustments/tactical tweaking and investments MUST be made this summer.
it sucks seeing milan spend/act like a small club when it comes to transfers/wages(i totally understand that they came out of a rough period, BUT this is milan were talking about, this is no small club)
also having magic mike out so long has caused a breakdown in our defense, tata is a decent shot stopper but cannot play more than a few games per season as, he’s not vocal, not positionally aware enough and has HORRENDOUS distribution
Ac Milan didn't act like one of the biggest clubs in the off-season. They made no big signings and weren't even linked with any big player.
Imagine being in second place yet this youtube guy still calls it a complete collapse lmao
Imagine not looking at the publishing date of this video.😉
@@RabonaTV it was 2 weeks ago so what? you want to tell me that they collapsed 2 weeks ago but now they are fine? my point still stands lol.
Redbird Capital Partners are owners of AC Milan. Guess which other team they partly own in PL? The team in PL is also suffering from the same lack of player purchase too.
We keep waiting for a miracle
Milan is definitely not collapsing lmao. Everything is at stake between 3rd and 6th. Only 2 points between Roma and AC Milan.
Calabria is definitely not good enough don't know how this guy became captain
eerily similar to Chelsea's situation.
Very well but I need to know why in the world did Pioli bench the best player (Leao), during the Derby...
As a longtime season-ticket holder, I don't completely agree with the analysis made by Martino. Last season stretch was achieved playing with all our best 3 midfielders: Tonali & Bennacer back, Kessie closer to Giroud, in a Lampard/Gerrard-like role. With Krunic stepping in and replacing whoever of the 3 that was missing. Even in the derby, the match that really turned things for us, we played like that. So it was more a 4-3-3 than a 4-2-3-1
And that's what is really missing this season. We don't press in a well organized way and the opponent just beats our midfield in a bat of an eye. Even yesterday against Torino it was the same, with the 2 midfielders running all over the place because we were not able to cover the spaces inbetween the lines. The 3-4-3 is not gonna work either.
Pioli really wants to play with a "trequartista" but honestly this team cannot sustain 1 striker and 3 offensive players. Not with players like Diaz, CDK and Leao that do not put the necessary effort during the defensive phase and do not even possess the necessary tactical QI to position themselves in a way that can help the team. What is really mindboggling is why he still doesn't want to at least try to play with Pobega and/or Vranckx in the CAM position ...
Coz of No ZLATAN
remember, they lose to genoa and ended up at 11th on 2020 January
Zlatan came and changed their mentality
Qualified to europe
Then, to champions
Won the league
Yes, he dont alone do everything even stats wise.
But the impact and the winning mentality is different.
If he comes back, they gonna be on track again.
Nice River Plate jersey. Is it for Ramon Diaz and his success at the World Club Cup
How many points could Napoli lose due to plusvalenza? Would it hamper their title charge?
Forza Napoli sempre 💙
Same shit going on at Liverpool (who RedBird also have a stake in)
Not surprising that AC Milian and Liverpool are having almost the exact same kind of season because of lack of investment in the team 🥲🥲
It's obvious lack of quality reinforcements in the transfer window.
Havin Tatarasanu certainly doesn't help them rn whatsoever
Ngl Liverpool and AC Milan fall down have been very similar. Both have same issues and their investers are almost same (red bird invested few money in fsg)
Milan's left back is the same as Liverpool's left back, knows attacking but no idea about defending.
The first 7 minutes demonstrates the hollow nature of globalised “calcio moderno”. Owners who aren’t even in the club’s country, let alone city. Owners who treat the club like an asset.
We'll Zlatan Ibrahimovic is missing
14:58
Let's look at Thiaw's 20 minutes in the Derby
- Lose Lautaro, who scored. Luckly for him, it was offside by less than an inch
- Got bodied by Lukaku, who scored, but the ref saved him again with a foul
- Lose Lukaku in the small area. Luckly for him, Romelu didn't control the ball
Yeah, I wonder why Pioli doesn't play him 😂
Incorrect, Lukaku literally had to toss him to the ground. He wasn’t bodied what match were you seeing? Lol
@@MartinoPuccio I disagree: they were both fighting, pulling their jersey, but Thiaw couldn't handle him
@@DanielGiuseppeDiNiro he clearly grabbed it harder and threw him down cause of it. Its literally why Thiaw drew the foul lol

I come back to this video to double down. UCL semi final and 4th in the league. Again, definitely not collapsing.
You forgot to mention the buyers loan of 600m
Here after the victory over Atalanta. I really like the new 343. Forza Milan sempre!!!
Malick Thiaw a.k.a. Thiawo Silva showed his quality in his full debut vs Torino.
If he doesn't start the next games, then Pioli should really be sacked.
Injuries, ownership troubles, and lack of reinforcements? Sounds like Liverpool
Milan have risen and fallen a bunch of times .. they'll be back again
As a Milan fan here is the thing this season that people miss. We were not doing good prior to the WC, after the injury of Maignan and the injury of Salemeakers and Calabria vs Empoli we were grinding up results in the worst ways possible or dropping points in the worst ways possible. I would suggest people to look at games like
Empoli 3-1, goal to take the lead in the 94th min.
Fiorentina 2-1, Milenkovic own goal to win.
Loss vs Torino.
Draw vs Cremonese.
Win at the end vs Hellas 2-1 with Hellas having all rights to win that game.
What does this tell us? That we were winning out of character. Out of mentality. Now what do we need with December coming and the WC? Pioli to make the team play better be more effective. What does he do? Nothing literally nothing. Now what is the worst thing to happen for this team? An event to destroy the Milan spirit and mentality. Guess what?! That happens vs Roma... we just closed on Napoli to 5 points of distance. 2 goals scored at the very end from Roma in the 88th min and 90th min to draw 2-2 and lose that closing line from Napoli which went to 5 points. That one string that was holding this team together, because for the longest of time there was no game, was mentality. After Roma that got destroyed in 100 pieces.
But, also... let's not lie to ourselves and think that the issue starts this season. Sure, we won the title and at the end we were a fort. That is true... BUT, we were playing 1nc a week counter pressing football based on episodes. We were not playing like a title winning team. We were full on super motivated to win the title... WE HAD issues. Issues that Pioli had to fix on the summer by training. Such as holding the ball, attacking and defending set pieces and so on. We didn't improve those thing one bit. Was clear as day in the first game of the season vs Udinese.
Adrian puts out this video and Milan beats Torino today.
Adrian is a good luck charm
It can be simply regression to the mean.
Loved the intro to the video should do more like it.
As for AC Milan i felt last seasons title win was a bit flukey as inter were the better team all around but Milan just got the rub of the green in critical moments, so it's no surprise that they are worse now because not only are they regressing to mean but also teams around them have improved but Milan have stayed static
Collapse? Stil batling for champions league, advanced through to the round of 16th. I think that people had greater expectations than the position the team is in. The scudeto of last year came earlier than their own prediction. They thought they would need 3-4 years to come to that. But talking about collapse in mid season? I guess anything just to put out content.
Not enough zlatan
Mhen we are back in form… wym
Look at the upload date and it will be clear to you. This was released right before Pioli started making changes!
@@RabonaTV Well, talking about a _"downfall"_ was pretty overstated.
You don't recover from a downfall in two weeks.
Very bad defense similar to PSG. But the psg case has more to due with the front players simply not defending and as a result the team barely steals balls and the opposite team has a lot of goal chances agaisnt team. Also Donnaruma isn´t the best..
Milan is tied for 3rd... that's not bad lol
Zlatan. Thats it.
Pioli completely lost the squad. He’s become arrogant and stubborn. Hasn’t integrated talent and keeps reverting to the same squad time and again. Milan will not make the CL next season meaning a massive financial downsize which will hit us in the next transfer window. Maldini has to share much of the blame. Origi signed to 2026 on €4M per year !?! Shocking decisions. Half the squad has to go and be replaced but none of this will happen . Hence Milan is looking at some enormous trouble ahead. Financial stability but complete footballing collapse.
Milan overperformed their talent last year. That Serie A title came ahead of schedule.
Tatarusanu
I'm an inter fan, so i may be biased, but if you're thinking the better team last season, it was definitely Inter to be honest. If they don't have the unreliable Dzeko at the top, they would have 90% won the Scudetto that season.
Statistics wise, Milan wasn't that good imo.
