  • We have an interesting discussion with Ole from System Audio. We want to know if we are pushing the boundaries of physics with smaller and smaller speakers. Let's see what Ole has to say about that... Warning: we do get a little philosophical.

Very thought provoking suggestions, gentlemen. While I won’t say it’s IMpossible to get Statement sound from small bookshelf monitors, between the aforementioned psychoacoustic, and digital signal processing realms, more applications in trial and error could lead to a few interesting breakthroughs in the future. Who knows? As for residential space, I might suggest the installation of in-wall, floor to ceiling line arrays that don’t take any space at all! I mean just imagine flagship Tidal Assoluta, and flagship Tannoy, or Raidho performance that takes no space at all. A couple of Wilson Benesch Subs and viola! full-frequency spectrum reproduction that leaves your guests astounded!🌹

Great topic, totally a consideration to even a concern. Really loved you guys engaging in this discussion with such honesty, warmth and accuracy. Perception in the human experience is a really big deal.
Had the opportunity to hear the Cabasse Rialtos. Little 10inch cubes. Powered, streaming, separate amplification for each driver, rear firing bass drivers, approaching 1k watts each, room correction.
$4k a pair. Was blown away by the imaging, control and dynamics. But was a bit antiseptic, maybe too clean - still prefer my own kit for tonality, albeit not as accurate. But what will this be in a few more years? It’s crazy how fast things are moving! Thank you again for such insightful discussion, and for your excellent channel overall! 🙏🏼

System Audio aren't particularly well known here in the UK but I've owned a couple of pairs of their little floorstanders for many years. And over that period they have never failed to elicit amazement from anyone who hears them, because they do indeed sound amazingly fullsome & complete. And the cherry on top is the very fair pricing. I wish the company great things going forward🍻

Musicians understand the principle of the missing fundamental. For example, the root note in a chord can be removed and the chord will still sound correct because the other notes in the chord imply the original fundamental and the psychoacoustic effect of the brain filling in the gaps does the rest. This is one of the illusions a smaller speaker can use to its advantage and listeners feel they aren’t missing much. It must work because otherwise people wouldn’t buy them. Put a big speaker on though and the differences become obvious.

Very very interesting!! After 35 years with of all kinds of amazing speakers, from Infinity Irs Beta, b&w 801 series 80, 802d2, Wilson sahsa 2, Raidho D2.1 and 100's more, my end game speakers will be Tannoy M1000 with a pair of Rel carbon specials powered by Mcintosh.

I still sometimes think people should note the distinctions between their expectations of the performances they want, with the realities of what the systems are able to provide…. If they want intimate, smooth delivery at sedate volume levels, Tubes can give them this. On the opposite side of things, if they like nightclub, low frequency push, investment in two subwoofers will readily accommodate that. And then there are those who seek stadium THX thermo-nuclear SLAM that can potentially shatter windows, via 8, to 12 flagship monoblock amplifiers! If cost is no object, the entire gamut is, indeed available. People just need real-world guidance on what it means to be good neighbors. At scheduled events, it’s ok to let the flagship amps flex 💪 their immense muscles.🌹

As sudd3650 suggests, DSP can now deliver low frequencies from a smaller enclosure. Meridian’s new DSP9 model is a truly full-range, groundbreaking wonder. 1,260 watts amplifying analog from four DACs for the six drivers, including four woofers. It’s here now. Meridian, not JBL

One suggestion though, for the sake of those just jumping in and the next level of professionalism can you please introduce yourself and the guest?

The physics cannot be deceived… and volume of speaker cabinet cannot be faked. Simple facts. And if you’re a lover of music and Hifi the system is part of the whole experience and so you don’t want it to disappear to the eyes!

We listen to music through stored recordings, electronic components and membranes moved by magnets in boxes.
Laws of physics are twisted and turned in the whole process.
      That's how it works!

The Klipsch The Fives are quite impressive in the low end for a small bookshelf speaker. They are perfect for those looking an all in one...well there is no 20hz rumble, but just enough bass to really not consider needing a sub...I live in an apartment, so the bass is overwhelming/rolled off...😊

Great podcast! I really love big high efficiency speakers, but yes the problem is the market demand.
People tend to buy small boxes, who sound clean and detailed. But I miss the effortless sound Jaap describes and the emotional engagement. I find overall audio is getting more clinical.

Smallness is not a quality-reducing factor, but the quality level and understanding of how the components are divided and fit on the circuit boards and how the sound amplification is also done in a balanced manner.
ONLY HUMAN INTELLIGENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO ACCOMPLISH THIS IS THE LIMIT/BENEFIT.

if dsp where more common, you can decrease the volume of the speakers and reach below 20hz
one part is the tuning, it have to be adjusted by your own ears, you you can not perceive 20hz signal then your speaker can not reproduce it. so either increase the signal or increase the woofer air displacement, and the placement of the woofer in the room is important.
for the speakers the most efficient use of speaker size is small sealed main speakers, and use two subwoofers in stereo, they can be quite small when built as sealed. and also passive, just woofer in a box.
as an example: cross the speaker to the subwoofer high, 180hz is a good point. now you have subwoofer impact all the way up over 200hz and a small main speaker that can play loud.
and i got 107db at 16hz from two 18 liter internal volume boxes in room. at only pulling 280watts total from my stereo power amp.

An old engineering's rule is still true: Price vs Size/Weight vs Quality/Power, you can choose and optimise two out of three, but not all three.

Could you “turbocharge” a speaker like an combustion engine? Smaller engine, bigger output…

    • @5starmaniac
      @5starmaniac Месяц назад

Ports in loudspeakers, are kind of similar to turbocharging an engine. You get a boost in bass depth (and volume), but the challenge is that the bass will be more or less out of phase

Genelec is then the Giant of the entire studio world, i.e. the market leader (like apple), which means that a large part of the music of all mankind is already made and built with them. They also work great in your living room. GLM/Dsp-based with which you can also make your own adjustment corrections yourself for a million different variants to your liking. Also the possibility to listen to music digitally completely from one device to the heart of the speaker. That is, analog and digital connection option if you want to use thousands of daccs on the market.
      - Greetings to a hifi player from Finland who already has the fine genelects of the master series in the living room as mere means of enjoyment after the eversolo 6 master edition.
