Hey everyone! I'm really enjoying doing these weekly mini-lesson vids for you - hope you're all enjoying them too. Here's a quick lesson on my favourite chord progression, the I - IVm. This sound changed my life when I first heard it without even knowing anything about music or having picked up a guitar. Years later, it's still my favourite sound in all of harmony. You'll find the backing track I was improvising over in the video description - leave a comment down below with any questions, lesson requests etc and if you want to support me, feel free to check out the links for all my lesson content and my app Solo. Have fun and happy practicing - Tom.
I had the same experience as a kid! What a sound. There are so many ways to twist the iv minor using inversions, other roots, various extensions, etc.. A few favourites you're no doubt familiar with: iim9b5 bVII13(#11) bVImaj7(#5) Happy to see these weekly lessons and I'll be working with the backing track this week 🙏
Thanks for the lesson. I have made much progress with melodic minor and hybrid picking thanks to your Melodic Minor pdf and RUclips videos. Great stuff.
You broke my heart with the reference to that movie. One of my favorite ever, for a lot of reasons really but, for sure, for melodies in it. Over 30 years later I recognize I didn’t got anything about the harmonic structure of that beautiful beautiful sequence of the movie. Thank you Tom, I’ll work on this progression as soon as I can grab the wood! 👍
The Master is back! Great and easy to follow along lesson. Btw, that clean tone used on the lesson is... hypnotic! Thank you for sharing with us mere mortals!
I fell in love with this chord sequence when learning a jazz tune “A Child is Born” by Thad Jones. Another tune is “Reasons” by EWF. That one is a Maj7 raising each note a semitone keeping the bass the same. Basically the same as a IV minor. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Tom.
This tonality is a favorite of Thomas Newman's - I first latched onto it in his score from "Road to Perdition." Subsequently noticed in other scores of his. Love it!
Great lesson Tom! I really like the level of details you go into. Melodic minor is becoming my favorite scale as well. You made a lesson on modal playing a while ago and it was fascinating. Unfortunately, it seems gone from YT. I wish you’ll do a similar one at some point.
Thnks for the lesson, Tom. Great sound and interestion concept. Tuned my instrument quartal few yrs ago and am there to stay. Very convenient tuning for exploring quartal harmony. Thnks, again!
Tom thank you for sharing these great insights. I think the fascinating thing about your demo is that Fmaj to Bbmin could have also been perceived as a V - Im rather than I - IVm, but you are making it sound like the latter by your note choices. It is just amazing! In fact, I'm now curious about how you would have sounded like if you were thinking Bbmin is your home, and Fmaj as being the tense, dominant sound.
Such a beautiful melancholic progression. The first time I heard this kind of chord progression was in John Petrucci’s Rock Discipline. I think it’s called Gemini, from his solo album Terminal Velocity.
Amazing lesson! Tom - the same way this non-diatonic progression spoke to you as a child, I had the same reaction to a Minor 1 chord to a minor 6 chord. Are there any interesting scale types you would use over that?
The more I see your signature Chewy guitar the more I wanna buy it !! This track and solo are amazing (and perfect to steal all the great phrasing because for once Tom is note playing them at light speed 😅) Great lesson video !
very nick johnston esque backing track and as always awesome playing. I remember that one video you did ages ago where you just rip through some melodic minor ideas unaccompanied. Loving seeing one of my favorite guitarists back to uploading regularly, hoping to see it continue dude!
we can think of the IV Minor as the fourth interval of the harmonic major scale / or the min 6 interval of the harmonic minor scale. Yet, the melodic minor approach sounds much more pleasing.
Somehow reminds me of Spaghetti Western theme music with a healthy helping of jazz influence. Really useful great sounding and good on the ear information. Gorgeous legato there. Where is the TQ Album? Great to hear some of your history. I see you are using the AXE FX III and what looks like an IRT Studio SLS powered but there are more things powered, Laney Cub, Boss Expander . Just starting using my SLS with the Axe FX III. A great combo.
How about using the mode of harmonic major - Bb Lydian b3? It's the same notes as Bb melodic minor except Eb -> E so now you have your major seventh of F which isn't there in Bb melodic minor (contains F7, not Fmaj7).
Does Bb melodic minor or Bb melodic minor with a #4 sounds better to you? The #4 maintains the diatonic 7th note of the original key, while the #4 gives the sound of b7. Which could highlight the progression better in this context?
Hmm.... The IV chord in Mel.Minor is a 7th chord with a raised 4th ex. F7#11. The Lydian Dominant scale? Or are you plaing the Ionian scale on the I (lets say it´s a C chord) and the Mel.minor on the IVm chord (F Mel.minor)? As in C Mixolydian b13? Great playing! Thanks for the upload:)
That's how I use it too! So over the minor 4 do you use specific modes of the melodic minor of intervals of the chord? For example over the 7 of that chord, you'd do super locrian?
I’ve been playing since 2012 and I don’t know a lick of music theory, I’ve been playing by ear this entire time and it sucks cuz I feel like can never do this, idk what the heck I’m playing 😭
So am I mate! I wanted to thank you for sharing so much amazing musical insights. Since getting your courses and the Solo app I say my playing has improved innumerably. Are you hyped for Elden Ring DLC then?@@tomquayleguitar

Hey Tom, I purchased solo on Android years ago. Is there ever going to be an update to get the android app to v2 like on iOS?
Muito bom.curto muito seu som que aula maravilhosa parabéns
Amazing player, amazing tone, however shockingly great teacher

wow. that was so beautiful. I loved every bit of it. your playing was so melodic. I enjoyed it so much.
I've been playing guitar for a very long time and imo your the best teacher on RUclips. Keep up the amazing work.ty

This is the most beautiful solo I've heard today❤ Thanks Tom 🇲🇼
I think Nick Johnston does a lot of this. Awesome!
I love your guidance and teachings. I wish someday I could have complete rhythmic and melodic control like you in my improvisation.
You can do it!
Tom, tasteful licks, my dude. Liked and subbed!
Great lesson on an incredibly intriguing sound. Also loving hearing that guitar in these lessons too, it’s a beauty! Thanks Tom 🙏

Awesome lesson and playing as usual! Couldn’t help but notice the Polybrute and the Pro-3 in the back😍

Really emjoyed your insight into how to use the Melodic Minor - could you do a video on using the Altered scale over a V- I but in a minor key?
Such a beautiful melancholic progression. The first time I heard this kind of chord progression was in John Petrucci’s Rock Discipline. I think it’s called Gemini, from his solo album Terminal Velocity.
Ah yes, I remember that tune.
Hi Tom. As always Lovely Sound, feel and dynamic. Don't stop impressing peoples. Here From Indonesia❤
Thank you very much!

‘Minor-ising’! Love it almost as much as lesson! Awesome lesson Tom. Thanks 😊
It does sound exotic. Like an Ali Baba thing, or a Hollywood version of the same. Or a cousin of Malegueña (sp?). Very relaxing!
At some cases it could be a ivm7 which dorian will be more useful than melodic minor.
Great lesson Tom thanks 😊
OK, thanks! Was looking for this for about ten years.
The more I see your signature Chewy guitar the more I wanna buy it !!

Fantastic Tom ! ; more schooling for me in this melodic minor territory . Really loved it . Oh , and I’ll fire up the solo
Thank you Tom, you are my hero!!

Beautiful!
Love these videos man, thank you!
My pleasure!
IVm and slow 12/8 groove, what more would you wish? Perfect

If you'd play Lydian b3 over the IVm, it would be the gateway to harmonic major, very beautiful too
How about using the mode of harmonic major - Bb Lydian b3? It's the same notes as Bb melodic minor except Eb -> E so now you have your major seventh of F which isn't there in Bb melodic minor (contains F7, not Fmaj7).
nice!
Proper lovely
I just discovered your channel and I subscribed. Thank you for the awesome lesson!
I love your sound! What are you using to sound like that?

Still waiting big lesson tom😁😁
Great lesson! I hope you have a can of Deoxit over there😂

There But For Fortune... Phil Ochs 1963
Dorian with raised 7th works better in my brain than major with b3 for MM.
I’ve been playing since 2012 and I don’t know a lick of music theory, I’ve been playing by ear this entire time and it sucks cuz I feel like can never do this, idk what the heck I’m playing 😭
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think of it as the minor major scale
Bummed you discontinued that beautiful guitar
Any tips for best fingering of the the Bbm6 in standard tuning?

Strong Andy Timmons vibes
Strings 1 and 2 tuned to F and C? Am I late to the party ? Lol
Tuned to quartal few years ago n don't thnk I wll ever go back.
Notice, no looking at the fretboard I.e. he is singing, using his fingers instead of his voice
Yo is that a DS1 black Knight figurine the background??
Yep! Massive Souls addict

Are you hyped for Elden Ring DLC then?@@tomquayleguitar
Be careful with gateway scales, it could lead to even more scale usage…
Kind of sound similar to the saints soundtrack.
If it’s a I-IVm in F, Why Bbm instead of Bm?
Bb is the 4th of F. F G A Bb C D E F. If you make the IV minor it’s just Bb minor.
B natural would be #4.
The IV chord in F major is Bb Maj, he is just switching the 4 chord's quality from major to minor
@@kadourimdou43 ahhh dude thank you!! This makes total sense!
Coffee for you.
Well, thank you very much!!
