This made ME cry, because I know how you were feeling packing up your room. We weren't allowed back in until the end of May, so it had been over 2 months since I stepped foot in my room and then I had to completely tear it down, as I'm changing grade levels (and classrooms), and pack up my kiddos' things. It was really hard to see the room sitting there like someone hit pause. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
I’m not a teacher but a mom of two elementary students. I appreciated teachers before this whole remote teaching thing but I have so much more respect and admiration for you all now. I can see the sadness in most teachers’ eyes. No one could have anticipated ending the year like this and it’s especially heartbreaking since it’s your first year but hopefully you know how appreciated and loved you are. Thanks for sharing !!!
Thank you so much for your kind words, appreciation, and encouragement. Thank YOU for all that you are doing with your kids at home right now - it's not easy! 💕 Thanks for watching :)
I’ve never met you before, but it is so obvious you are such a wonderful, caring and compassionate teacher. Your first classroom was just perfect!! I especially loved the first board in the hallway, as you arrived to your room! That was beautiful! My niece daughter is a special ed middle school teacher. Online was hard! I’m really glad there are only a few days left! Educators work INCREDIBLY HARD every day!! 💗💗💗God Bless! Edit: I wrote my comment before I even got to the end of your video and I knew I had you pegged right! I knew you loved your students, it’s just so obvious! Love, from Northern Illinois!
I am currently putting out my applications for my first year of teaching for the 2020/2021 year and your videos inspire me so much. You really show me what a teacher should be. Thank you for sharing your experience and being honest and truthful.
Awww Maddie this is such a sweet vlog, and I was totally feeling sad with you! I’m sure your kids miss you just as much as you’re missing them. You have such a big heart and it’s so evident that you adore your kids.
Bless your heart. I had tears in my eyes. I'm retired from teaching, but I have friends that are as upset as you at not being able to finish the year and say goodbye to their students. All teachers have a unique story to tell about this year. Best wishes and blessings to you.🙂💕
You brought me back to my feels! 😩 I packed up my classroom last week and I had so many mixed emotions being there again. This is definitely a hard time because it’s our first year, but we are going to become so much stronger from this 💕
I use one of the rainbow photo storage bins from Michael’s to store my word wall cards and it is SO helpful! I sort them by lesson in the order they come up in the curriculum. It’s so easy to just pull out the bin for the next lesson! I also wrote the lesson number on the back of the cards so I can easily put them back in the right box!
That's a great idea!! Thanks, Danielle! I have several of those photo storage bins from Michaels that I got the last time they were on sale that I haven't filled yet! Adding it to my list of summer projects!!
New subbie and teacher youtuber here! I love how you showed us your real emotions ❤️ I probably cried so much as well especially because it was my first year and I felt like I didn’t get to experience my first year ! ❤️
Hi Maddie! Love your videos😍 I just wanted to say you will never forget your first class: it's something very special. When I qualified as a teacher (in Ireland) almost 7 years ago there were very few jobs. I spent my first 2 years subbing in various schools all over. It was nice working with the kids but constantly moving around was exhausting and unsettling. In my third year I finally got a job covering a maternity leave in Senior Infants. To explain, Junior Infants would be the same as kindergarten and Senior Infants is their second year in school. Hope that makes some sense and helps you see where the equivalent would be in the States. Anyway, my last day with this class was the 16th of March as the regular teacher was due to come back. I held it together while the children were still there but once the school gate shut after home time I was a mess and balled my eyes out. My point is Covid cannot take away from all the wonderful experiences you have had this year and all the amazing memories that came with it. You have a long and awesome career ahead of you and if you're lucky (like I was) you will get to stay in the same school and be amazed as you watch your first class grow up. I wish you all the best for the future; the world needs more teachers like you❤❤❤
WOW! Thank you so much for sharing your story with me, Sandra! You are very right - we will never forget this group of kids! ❤️ Thank you - I wish the same for you!!
Packing up this year is emotional for me also. I will go in next week and pack up my kiddos things. I am not looking forward to it. Thank for sharing!!
I’m so sorry! What a sad way to end your first year, but I’m so glad you talked about how proud you are of yourself! The first year of teaching is so incredibly hard! My school has been letting us go in as much as we want as long as we don’t bring kids in with us and we social distance. It’s so strange to have the room be ready for new kids when we aren’t ready to say goodbye to current kids 😔
Thank you! Yes, trying to be positive and reflect on how much we've accomplished this year despite the current state of things 💕 I totally understand that! It is so hard to be in your classroom without your students!!
I remember finding out that dry-erase marker would remove Sharpie ink. One of my kids told me just before I had an extreme meltdown! :) Hope you're feeling better. You definitely have a story for your personal history book!
Although your students are not there, you will always remember them. You never forget your students from your first year of teaching. I have been allowed to go back since last week to clean up and take down materials, and it is a lonely and grieving task. You are always wondering if your students are safe and if their nutritional and emotional needs are being met. May you find rays of light to comfort and guide you during any dark moments.
This is so heart breaking... I know it’s hard but just know you’re not alone in this, even the teachers who have been teaching 20+ years, this is the first they’re going through this... this will pass ❤️❤️❤️
Me too! haha Oh man - I know it's hard for us teachers, but I keep thinking about how all of my little 6 year olds are processing and dealing with this, too! It's so hard for everyone in different ways :( Hang in there!
My last year in elementary school was so much fun and nice I am so said it's over but I am ready to start a new chapter in my life here I come middle school I will miss u ms.ward
Definitely not how we planned or thought our year would end. I can only imagine how it is being your first year! So I’m curious, do you have to take everything off the walls every year?
Aww, I feel for you 😭 its such a sad time but we know it’s for the best. I loved seeing your expo tip make it to your YT video I was so mind blown on instagram lol
Just packed up student belongings Wednesday and totally related with being so upset. I can’t even imagine how much more it’s hurting you not being able to say good bye to your first class. 😣 I wish I would have thought about putting snacks in my kids bags.
Thank you for watching 💕 Yes - it's so hard! Maybe you could look into dropping them off at your lowest income neighborhood or at a daycare/summer camp that is still happening this summer?
We’ve been allowed in twice for 20 minutes each time to get things we need for remote learning. No news on the packing of rooms- last we heard we will be waiting until social distancing is lifted before we can go in to pack up.
Packing this year was hard for me as well. I am a first year teacher in Pre-K and it is so hard not seeing my students and ending the year with them...
I went to school today and packed up the students personal items, some workbooks that we didn't get to and their work I had prior to Spring Break. I am going back next week to put their little gifts I made for them and sadly, that will be how year 14 ends :(. I am not looking forward to do this again and I hope we do not have to repeat this.
How come you have to pack everything up so much, like taking everything off the walls? We just have to move things off our floor for the floors to be cleaned. I can't imagine taking the whole classroom down like that every year.
Yep - we move all of our things so that our floors can be cleaned like you said, and we also take down most things on our walls to prevent fading and in case they need to touch anything up (paint, things like that) :) But now that I know where everything is going, it will be much easier to set up next year!
+Primarily Yours Maddie , This is one of the most touching stories I have ever heard or seen . It's an over ridding theme here in these times that we are living in . Back in the 80s and 90s , if anyone were to ask a child who their favorite person is it would probably be a cartoon character or a singer or an athlete . Today , if anyone asks a child whom their favorite person is it would be their teacher . As much as I hate seeing these stories and scenes of students missing their teachers and teachers missing their students breaks my autistic heart . However , if there is anything that I would like to tell you is that the school systems must learn to do more counting for things that go beyond the curriculum that you the teachers are being made to teach and when you have made a positive impression on the students don't worry about anything else even if a lesson tanks because you are learning what works and what does not work for the students and school should be a learning institutions for students and teachers not just the students . You miss your students and it is safe to say that your students miss you too . I hope that you have a fantastic summer . - Dwight

Right?! I was too! 😂
You can also use alcohol to take it off. I use it on my boards at work when I accidentally grab the wrong marker.
That's a great idea, too! :)
you are so strong I am a student and we are getting a new principal this year and it is so hard
I'm sorry, Julia! I know that change of any kind is difficult to adjust to. I hope that your new principal is a great fit for your school!

Did you have a damp cloth or just a Kleenex for the sharpie and expo marker?
Just a dry paper towel or tissue!! :)
