Great reaction as always! Morgan James studied opera at Julliard, but then decided she wanted to more pop stuff (see interview with Elizabeth at Charismatic Voice). Other videos to watch with her include "It's All About That Bass" with PMJ and Haley Reinhart, Also "Dear Prudence" with Haley Reinhart, and if you haven't reviewed it, you must see/hear Haley Renihart singing "Creep" with PMJ. PMJ is amazing and so are you, by the way!!!! Keep up the great work!
Morgan James is a treasure. With that said, Postmodern Jukebox is amazing with their incredible interpretations/arrangements and production values, and of course, the musicianship.
Haley's adaptation of 'Creep' is simply magnificent. There's another very important figure in the PMJ magic, without whom this ensemble wouldn't even exist: Scott Bradlee, the founder of Postmodern Jukebox. This man is a musical genius. All these wonderful arrangements and adaptations are all thanks to him.
I can hardly wait to see them again - but fortunately, it's less than two weeks away 🎶

@@AndreaSilvestro - One thing that sets this cover of "Dream On" apart from the original is that Scott Bradlee (piano player) re-arranged this in 6/8 time, rather than the original 4/4. It's very obvious when you go back and listen again. FYI, I just saw Morgan live last weekend at the Spokane Symphony featuring the music of Broadway. She literally blew the roof off the theater with her rendition of "Phantom of the Opera" to the tune of a three-minute standing ovation by a sold out house of over 2,000 people! Girl can SING!!!
I've been following Morgan for a couple years and she is one of the greatest female vocalist I've heard in a long time...incredible technique and tone. She has a classical singing degree from Julliard and after graduating she went into musical theater (she was in the Broadway revival of Godspell).

Morgan is Julliard-trained in opera. She decided that she was better at jazz and Broadway-type musicals and did those, instead. She has appeared on Broadway in at least four musicals, including Godspell and Motown, The Musical.

It's when Morgan does that knee lift, you know she's giving it her all. Every video of her has been outstanding whether it is with PMJ or others featuring her. Absolutely love this song in the first place, but with this version it gives it an all new meaning. Her Julliard education has really paid off.

My wife and I saw her perform last year. Afterward, as she was signing a CD for us, I told her, "I think I just saw Steven Tyler waving a white flag."
No need to apologize for stopping. We have the original to hear and enjoy straight through any time we want. We’re here to learn and understand what makes a song tick, and the pauses to explain are required. You’re one of a small group of folks who do that.

For this kind of contemporary 20th century American style (Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Soul) I've never heard a better vocalist than Morgan. All that warmth, and soul, and mass in her sound, but at the same time an upper-midrange resonance that has so much clarity and punch. My favorite part of this performance is after the big climactic moment. She's just a little out of breath, and that slight breathlessness makes her voice sound even more amazing.
Welcome to PMJ, a "musical collective", lead by pianist Scott Bradlee, who does the "retro" arrangements of popular songs. The exact setup varies over time and depending on the arrangement. Always top-notch musicians, not to mention the singers. Oh, my, the singers... Morgan James, Haley Reinhart, Puddles Pity Party, and many more... The basic concept is: Back to the roots; set up the musicians, microphones, a fixed camera, and just do it. No cuts or editing. (Sometimes in a hilariously cramped space, especially the earlier videos which were recorded in Bradlee's apartment.)

If you love Morgan, I highly recommend Eva Cassidy's live solo acoustic version of Over the Rainbow. If you don't cry, you don't have a soul especially when you understand the back story of that performance recorded in a club in Washington DC. I'll say no more. Do yourself a favor and watch the angel that is Eva.

it makes sense your wonderful reaction to this video-as Morgan James is very much a singer's singer-and you are a singer! as folks have noted here-Morgan graduated from the voice program Juilliard. which is really the best school in the u.s. for classical vocalists. her story is wonderful. she got into Juilliard right out of high school, which isn't all that common, but she was persistent about getting in plus she had all this very natural talent. what is interesting is that she wasn't entirely happy during her time at Juilliard, and she never felt she fit in quite. she also didn't find foreign language as easy for her as the singing. and a classical vocalist pretty much has to master Italian, French, and German if they really want a career in opera at the Juilliard level.
luckily for the rest of us, she stuck out her time and clearly learned so much about her voice and her singing. and when she graduated instead of going towards the world of opera, she went towards broadway and musical theatre, as well is towards soul and r & b music. Morgan does have an authentic soul sound as a singer. She played Teena Marie on broadway in MOTOWN. So opera's loss is broadway/R & B/jazz/soul/modern music's gain. Morgan has a great RUclips channel with so much incredible music. listen to the prince song she covers "call my name". Prince liked her version of it so much, he allowed her to record it. Morgan James is one of the best vocalists out there today. She is major major. thanks for posting. I've liked and subscribed.
I saw her and her husband with their band in a venue that seats just under 500 people. If they come anywhere close again, I'll definitely be there and I recommend everyone else do the same. She has a ton of songs on her channel done during the pandemic with just herm her husband, and a few friends who did stop by occasionally. "Do Right Man, Do Right Woman" with her, her husband and Marec Broussard is great along with "Maps" with PMJ.
The first time I heard this cover I just couldn't get Steven Tyler's voice out of my head. It wasn't until I listened for the third time that I could truly appreciate Morgan's cover.

Morgan studied opera at Julliard (her classical training is why she has those big pipes) and has performed on Broadway (Motown, The Musical, Godspell, The Addams Family and others). Under the wing of Berry Gordy Jr. (of Motown Records), she was signed under Epic Records and released two albums. She decided to break out on her own and started Hedonist Records LLC as an Indy. She has her own band and is married to the guitar player, Doug Wamble.

Morgan is one of the hardest workers in the industry. For example, Morgan dreamed that she performed Jesus Christ Superstar as Jesus and Shoshana Bean was Judas. She decided to put on an entire female production of JCS and started hand selecting some of the best vocalists, performers, musicians, producers and engineers in the business - all females. She put on a live concert at the Highline Ballroom and also recorded and released the entire score. Check out Gethsemane, you WILL be impressed!

Cant add more to what others have said. Morgan is one of the greatest Vocalists of our time (speaking from 50 years experience) and can sing literally anything. She has all the Vocal Tools in her tool box but uses them sparingly (only what is needed to convey the songs message)
