I've noticed a running theme in the horror of Red Candle Studio's games: Guilt In Detention, iirc it's about the guilt the main character harbors for basically being a snitch, which led to the deaths of her classmates and teacher In Devotion, it's about a father whose guilt is of him failing as a father, which led to the death of his daughter Then we have Nine Sols in which we have Lady Ethereal racked with guilt from failing her people in her quest of helping them This probably doesn't mean anything, but it's still an interesting detail i've noticed of this studio lol
Not just Lady Ethereal, I think Yi also harbors guilt for leaving his sister behind, and being responsible for the use of the apemen in the project after getting close to Shuanshuan
And not only she failing their people, she hide the problems and turn her eyes away from the dangerous signs, risking everyone's life and make smooth surface while she is terrifying what will come eventually.
Man, everything about Lady Ethereal was amazing. Her world is was the coolest thing in the game, her boss fight was incredibly fun, her world and the unraveling of heavenly dream into hellish nightmare was AMAZING A kind benevolent woman warped by the guilt of her failures. The road to hell truly was paved with good intentions.
Yeah, Lady Ethereal's area and boss fight were the things that finally made me fall in love with Nine Sols. Before it I was like, this is a good game. But after Lady E it became my favorite
Lady Ethereal's trauma and madness is literally the stuff of nightmares, especially the horrific image of her colleagues killing themselves and Xiaohe in a state of psychosis and despair trying to strangle her and it's implied she lost her body to the infection, most likely caused by Xiaohe. Atleast Yi sort of helps make peace with her past guilt and allow her to reunite with everyone in the end.
To make things more tragic Xiaohe, the one strangling her, is actually her daughter. The sheer guilt of that happening to her daughter along with the rest of her colleges killing and mutilating themselves because they all went mad must of been immense. And judging by it Eigong basically just shoved that whole incident under the rug, told her to say it was a ''success'' and to find a solution to the Soulscapers killing themselves problem, and then for some reason transplanted her brain after the infection happened and reconnected her brain to the life support even after she tried disconnecting her life support before. We can infer that the Soulscape was likely never really fixed too considering that the only other ''living'' Solarians we see that are out of the Soulscape pods other than the Sols is the drugged and mentally vacant and burnt out partygoers at the Feng's theatre area. Well that and the mutants maybe but I don't count them. Lady Ethereal just could not get one win. Hell one of the interesting things about her is that she was the only Sol that was against the harvesting of humans/apemen from the start and tried to argue against using them because they are sapient peoples. She still failed at convincing the other Sols. She legitimately was just too kind for her job and everything going wrong broke her entirely. At the very least if her death scene is any indication she rejoined her colleagues in the end and they look like they never actually blamed her. She also technically didn't die alone with Yi there who also knows exactly how shes feeling as his plan was a complete fuck up from beginning to end too.
4:38 the modeling of the machine is really similar to Taiwan’s traditional grave, this may be interpreted as indicating that the failure of the experiment is doomed😢
That cortex center scene at the beginning? With the eventual deterioration of the scene and the jumpscare? That is the most Red Candle Game thing to do, a signature even.

@@philrei2797SPOILER i definitely agree. she made a bunch of mistakes, ultimately i think the fault here lies with her ‘ego’? im not sure how to word, but she tried so hard to achieve what she hoped for, that she ended up on the wrong path in the end. Just Guo mang, her intentions were noble to feed the starved, she got what wanted but the things she did along the way.. i really like this games message honestly, strive but not too harshly that you do the wrong things
I didn’t realize that, during the really heavy flickering jumpscare at the end of the First Visit section, it’s showing Yi facing towards a heavily distorted Lady Etherial. I don’t know if that actually implies anything, but that’s such a cool detail!
That scene at 8:46 … omg gave me crazy chills as sinister heaven scape turns into the true nightmare within her mind… that’s some seriously psycho scary stuff…! What a compelling character and storyline.
5:07 I didn't realize that this seems to be what the Lady Ethereal in the bossfight background seems to be going through, at first a small slit, then a large opening with something pulsing, and finally a large butterfly with multiple eyes. It seems like that is to represent the disease spreading and worsening.
Out of all of the Sols she was more pure hearted (besides ●●) even more so than Yi himself, I hope that there's an update or dlc where Yi is able to save her and use the biofactory to give her a new body😔
She looks like an Undertale character, but that's probably just the similar looks. (Especially in the memory fragments (flashback crystals as I call them) ) But I hope there's peace out there for her. (Although I don't fully know this) That's it, that's the comment.
I love her personality, she's nice, has a pleasant and calm voice and cares about people in need. Her intelligence does amaze me a lot. And she has the perfect shape for hugs and cuddles and since she's fluffy, it is even more perfect.
