- It's been a while since I uploaded anything Priest-related, but this particular interview with Rob is a true gem for the fans and I had to share it with a wider group of people.
The interview is from 1982, possibly a couple of weeks before the release of Screaming for Vengeance (July 17) - since the interviewer says it's "coming out" and Rob says it "has a title now" and the album is "long lasted".
In the background you can hear Pain and Pleasure playing until 0225. Rob says they are in Miami.

This original upload is very(!) low on audio, so I boosted it with about 1500% (yeah, that's right). Unfortunately it's only from the right channel, and I don't know how to make it stereo, but I believe it's still enjoyable for a fan. :)

"We've still got a few years left in us" - Rob Halford, 1982
2021, Priest is still going
Kinda. I'm a massive Priest fan and has been since my pre-teens, but honestly, I think it's about time for them to wrap it up, and go out with grace.
@@AB-80X Me too.... especially since KK left and Glenn battles Parkinson's. Rob cannot properly sing the lines anymore. Very inferior compared to the original Priest.
2024: Invincible Shield baby!!
@@davek8427 First single was fantastic
2023 soon to be 2024 yes Judas Priest is not leaving anytime soon…
I like this guy. I hope he makes it in the music business
😂
Halford is world class
Certainly beats Stained Class, which is a great album by the way.
Rob's flamboyance here cracks me up, and warms my heart. That being said, his answers are very genuine and concise. Passion like that is hard to come by.
Cool to see his point of view right before they blew up with Screaming 4 Vengeance. And these were his drug/booze days, still so humble and articulate! Guy deserves every accolade, He's earned METAL GOD!!!
I mean it was recorded just before a show, and he never went on stage completely pissed - only buzzed.
The real drug thing only started in 1984. Here he was just smoking a bit of dope and popping the odd pill. Rob's major vice was booze.
I love Judas Priest and I love Rob Halford, such a sweetheart, great guy!! 😘🤘🏻❤️🔥
I am speechless. This is a very rare hidden gem
not realy
Thanks buddy!
Rob was always so articulate and interesting. Actually, this hidden gem really does show Rob's devious sense of humour ! Hilarious ! Big Priest fan and this really was sooooo long ago.
Rob speaks genuinely and with good grammar
Yes, Rob is extremely intelligent and well-mannered. It's no wonder he is such a good lyricist.
Metal fans and musicians are the brightest.
@@IraSiegel Nope
@@jamespell1138 Keyboard warriors are not though.
@@IraSiegel I'm a metal fan myself but to say we are more intelligent than others is untrue
He looks like a character out of Mad Max movies
That was the time.
I just love Rob Halford. He is a machine on stage. World class performer. I'd love to have a beer with the legend. The stories he could tell.
You'd need a time machine
You’re nearly 38 years too late to have a beer with him but he could probably still tell good stories
Didn't he rape that guy from Warrant ?
SFV is a masterpiece.
JP / Halford have so much been an important part of my life I’m 53 and still love them.
Judas Priest beste Heavy Metall Band aller Zeiten.!!!
54, same
Rob has always been about the music and love for his fans
Absolutely gold. Saw priest on screaming tour November 1982. San Francisco Cow Palace.
Oh man, I'm envious! That must have been amazing!
I saw Rob in person one day filling up at a petrol station, I was a pizza man pumping up,.I gave him the horns, he horned back…highlight of my life
fuck that's a sweet leather vest, damn!!
It's actually a sleeveless jacket, and yes, it's breathtaking!!
@@seanahmed9079 Do what I did. Play in a Priest tribute band. Then you can dress up in full leather gear a few nights every month.
@@AB-80X or you can always hang out at your local leatherbar!! Here in Chicago that would be Touche or Jackhammer
@@seanahmed9079
Very fitting names. Here that would be either Jailhouse or Inner City Leathermen lol. I'm not gay, but they are still fun places for a good party.
Awesome Pure class Robert Halford
Watching this after reading Confess kinda breaks my heart. love priest forever, long live rob!!
Explain please
@@fuchsssz dude you should really read the book. But let's just say being a gay drug addict in the 70s, 80s and 90s while being one of the biggest representatives of a music style known for it's chauvinist audience was tough on him.
@@NinusMaximus ah well yes that is obvious
What's awesome is the interviewer asking about Heavy Metal waning while Rob and Priest have just recorded this
game changing" juggernaut classic Metal Album and the interviewer has no idea how amazing it is
No words...not exactly the raw metal head that the music conveys. I still remember when I found out he was 'sweet'. Doesn't change my love for the music. Amazing interview. #keeper
Imagine if Rob and Freddie Mercury performed together. How amazing would it have been?!
yes it would have been epic for metal.
Why fred?
Always well spoken. Screaming for Vengeance tour was my first Priest show . Killer.
I always laugh when i think back to those days and realize how naive I was about gay culture. He drops so many hints in this interview. lol. What an excellent frontman he still is.
Thanks for uploading ! cool that you get your hands on the master tape.
Oh man, this is gold ! This ended too soon. 👍
Those were the days! ✨The good old days! ⚡️
Iron Maiden is my all time favorite band ever, but Rob Halford The Metal God is my all time favorite lead singer ever. I still remember the first time I ever listened to Judas Priest which was back in 1987 on MTV'S Headbanger's Ball. They played the live version of The Hellion / Electric Eye from the Legendary 1982 Memphis Tennessee show off the Screaming For Vengeance tour. I loved it big time, and ever since I have been a huge massive fan of Judas Priest. I was barely 10 years old back then, and that was when I really got into Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal music. It was a very exciting time for me and I loved the majority of all the bands I listened to for my first time, but I knew even back then that there was something very special about Judas Priest compared to most of all the other bands. Over thirty years later Judas Priest is still one of my all time favorite bands ever. Thanks for posting this interview. I really enjoyed it.
I was 16 in 87' when I found unleashed in the east in an under $10 bin at hastings. I want to say either $4.99 or $5.99. I wore that tape out and replaced it 3x before buying the cd. My favorite album still today
Brotha, Priest is a special band, there is just somthin' about them that has a real charm, beauty and danger to 'em. Definitely with the Halford era, the Ripper era, not so much.
You should read KK's book about how shitty Maiden treated Priest.
Judas Priest the best Heavy Metall Band forever.!!!
Rob, you are a great guy❤
The metal god.
Great to see a side to Rob we don't often see
Got his book on audio. Had it pre-ordered. Listens to it while driving otr in a semi in a day & half. All 12 plus hours. Rob narrates his book too, like Bruce of Maiden done his. He was respectful to K. k. As was KK in his book of Rob. Glenn of Priest does not get the respect he deserves as a guitarist. 2 handed finger tapping is what Eddie Van halen is known for & credited for. But, the same year Vanhalens first album came out. So did Hell Bent for Leather. & The intro to Glenn's solo was "Finger Tapping". Credit where it is do for Priest & Glenn. (Les Paul did it in exercises back in his day but that's history)
Wow never seen this before. Thanks for posting x
Also Rob has such a nice speaking voice too.
Rob was waiting for some pain and pleasure in the first minutes 🖖
I love how you can hear it playing in the background. This is gold
You can also hear the squeeze of the leather 😅
I love him!!
JP live was epic. Great to see them still rockin 🎸
his book is out today
Check out the linked video at the end of the description ;)
@@VTX666 oh cool. I missed it.
I am about half way through it. It is pretty good. He does not hold anything back. I highly recommend it some of it is pretty funny too.
Man, I would have loved a videoclip for 'Pain and Pleasure', as Rob says. Just think about what could've been like. Whips, chains & leather everywhere.
This is amazing. Never seen this.
Screaming remains a genius work.
Awesome interview. Thanks for posting this. I can still remember seeing Priest on this tour.
yep me too,,,,
Metal Is for life.
Halford is metal and Defenders changed everything for me. btw: is no one gonna mention the camera-work on this?? wtf
This is a master tape so it would have been edited later. They do different framing shots for interest knowing that small soundbites will be used. Makes it handy for doing cut-away shots. They would have edited in someone asking him those questions as well.
They may have had another locked off camera set up as well.
@@andrewgrant6612 The camera zoom-in around 13:00 is very wtf though lol
I want that jacket!
9:10 “heavy metal geriatrics”. ....in 1982 folks. I bet even Mr. Halford himself is dying laughing at that one now!
Right?! It is interesting that for them, their 8th album, albeit not all with Halford, it could seem like they'd done it all. My first album was Defenders. I loved it! Vengeance was their peak I think. Still killing it love for so many years. Saw them in Orlando a couple years ago!
Superb!!! Many thanks uploader dude!
Enjoyed it very much. Cheers !
Thanks buddy!!!!
Very charismatic young guy he was - still is full of charisma, lovely ! 😍
There were not to many interviews with Halford seen in the US back then. The band always tried to sort of hide the fact that Halford was gay and had gay mannerisms in his speech and way of moving. Back then it was a big "NO-NO" and the band couldn't be seen being fronted by a gay man. Nowadays very few people would care, but back then people did care. Halford was gay and he showed it. Good to know now that he is comfortable with who he is and that he always was.
queen wasnr metal but they thrived
It wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference if he had come out. Probably would have helped them even more. Metal is not about being gay or straight, black or white, male or female, long or short hair, or tattoos and leathers. . It's a primeval force that flows through all. That's why it's a worldwide phenomenon. There was a lot of racism and sexism prevalent in the NWOBHM which was predominantly an all white boy show. I remember seeing Priest and Ozzy at the dawn of the 80s and being subject to racial abuse. Something that would never happen today. Thankfully that all changed when thrash and glam metal took over and brought a more balanced multicultural representation that appealed to everyone. I noticed more women at shows too which was a sign things were changing for the better.
@@rushshukla4636 Don't know about that. I actually think it would have been very damaging to their careers. It is easy to say things now with todays points of view or mentality, but back then things were different. I don't think Metal ever had a problem with races back then, after all many Metal artists were of different backgrounds and ethnicities from the beginning , but homosexuality was the big NO,NO! Things have changed now of course.
@@HELL77 I agree. Judas Priest would have been on every metal fan's blacklist if he had come out in the early '80s. Even after he came out, in the '90s I recall, his popularity took a hit.
How do you know that is the reason though?
The "BEAST" Halford 🤘
I am thankfull RUclips suggested this video for me, what a gem indeed!
What a find!👏😲
Only Halford can make the brummie somewhat glamourous. what a fucking legend
Rob is so down to earth and honest. Wicked sense of humour xx
Man, this was the straightest interview I've ever seen
I always love how British rockers sound the way they sound and still pound everything on stage. JOhn Bonham in 1970 and this, you know: I've got my nice car, my cottage, and tea. Just lovely people who play lovely music.
AMMENDMEENT
Ya watch this and it makes me laugh that he thought folks would be surprised when he came out in the 90s.
Body talks.
*mid 2000's
This is ridiculous! Thank you for uploading! What clarity. Where on earth did you find this?!?
I’m stunned-this is awesome. Does anyone know who the interviewer was?
dope
❤
🤘🤘
Amazing interview.
Some people say you can't spot gay guys if you are guided only by their behaviour.
Halford: "Hold my beer"
It's no coincidence that everyone who knew him back then knew he was gay. The only one who did not know that everyone knew, was Rob.
I haven’t watched yet but pretty sure it’s the “let’s have a party” one lol.
For some reason I favor the material they released in the 70’s and British Steel, though recorded in 1980 is the perfect Metal album for me.
🙋
"Good clean healthy fun"😁
Tickets will really sell ..$1.75 a piece 😆
First Priest concert... August 29, 1982, Springfield IL. Third date on the SFV tour! I think he's got a few Budweisers in him here. Letting his freak flag fly... it's obvious!!
my friend from marin general hospital greenbrae psychiatric unit was smashing bottles in downtown sf it was fun and we had a real doctor sabbatini like on bob the builder
Rutger Hauer vibes)
yes, very strong Rutger Hauer vibes :)
I've never heard Rob say these things in other interviews about his sexuality.
To be honest, i think if more people had seen this video at the time we wouldn't have been so shocked when he came out! lol
@@koitorob not too many of us were shocked at all. We all wondered but back then, we mostly just saw pics of bands & read interviews. If we would has social media like today. He would had been all over it. & that's how Rob truly was back then like this interview. Unable to contain himself due to always keeping his true nature (as best he could that is) secret.
@@michaeltoland1118I couldn't agree more with you. I'm 55 years young and I think most people knew Rob was gay. He even dressed like one of the Village People band members. Didn't really matter to us back then and still doesn't. It's all about the great music and always should.
ive just watched it and he didn’t say anything about he’s own sexuality did he really
@@CoolMikey81 --- I sure didn't hear him say anything about it.
Figuring that, once people know, they retroactively add it in subconsciously.
This is like that old Benny Hill sketch where he's wearing super tight leather trousers while sitting on a leather couch! 😂
The master of heavy metal 🤘 i am waiting for a copy of robs book signed .
i will be showing it off on my Instagram soon gods_of_heavy_metal 🙌🏻 its gonna be an awesome read 😱👮🏻♂️
Again guys, I can’t say anything here that has not already been said I concur.…
We've been doing this for so long? How wrong is he.Yeah i mean it had been a decade since they had started but i bet even he wouldn't believe that they would still be going after 50 years.I guess he thinks its a long time since other bands stayed together for less than 10 years
Things went faster then , each 5 years you had a New refining of genre by one or few bands .
10 years , 14 in that case , you were an old band .
Painkiller era..
? Not at all...Rob with hair here....it is like early 1982
No this was early 80's, screaming for vengeance era.
It was couple of weeks before Screaming for Vengeance
13:03 Rob's making it pretty clear that he's gay here.
so many cops have no idea who the person is
Great times of youth! Thanks Judas Priest😍💥💫😍Sin After Sin, Point Of Entry💥💥
Rob's sexuality is irrelevant to me. What is relevant is that Judas Priest is one of the very best metal around. I own the entire catalogue, and even some of the weaker ones are better than some of the sh*t some bands are releasing out there today.
12:55 WHAT DID HE SAYYYYYYY? 👀👀👀 English is not my first language... Am I getting it wrong or did he say what I think he said?
First time I showed you the creeps I was 10 years old New York City I went through my brother my mother always memorize another free spend my whole life by 10:15 you something obviously Judas Priest about 10 years I'm a family man priest videos on RUclips little kid go back to videos
when did they start calling this person the metal god
1980.
I know he's gay, and I'm gay too. But damm, I would turn straight for him
APARTMENTS
10:30 i thought Rob was being a little catty about the new wave but no, he was talking about venues and difficulty getting gigs. Pleased the interviewer got that clarified. And then later on we discover Priest have been working with Julien Temple, a la The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Interesting stuff. Rob Halford: rock icon, gay icon, all round great guy.
always the boring questions about recording, of course they were always recording...duh....ask something interesting
People behind the scenes like these reporters must have known he was gay long before he came out about a decade later. His mannerisms and use of sexual innuendo in conversation are a dead give away. Not to mention he practically "outed" himself talking about shopping for sex toys.
Don't think so- dildos are used on women, sometimes by men.

Right around 14 minutes I gave up on thinking I could actually listen to him speak. So I decided to just listen to the band and never listen to another interview! Call me close-minded I don't care... I like to keep my spokes tight. Who wants to ride around on a bicycle with loose spokes 😂!
