Receiving a mid-life update for 2021, the current generation of 5 Series has been refreshed on the outside and inside, and under the bonnet, to build a more competitive midsize executive sedan. The new 5 Series is currently offered as a PHEV model, the 530e, and with four-, six-, or eight-cylinder engine choices varying from the 530i to the limited-run M5 CS. The 540i xDrive model featured in this review obviously shows off the new design, touchscreen and other pieces of interior tech, as well as sporting the straight-six engine with its new 48V mild hybrid system. Watch the review to find out what I think about the 2021 540i xDrive!

Maybe old people like me at 50 who used to own multiple M3, M4 wants a fully loaded 540i at 79545 usd instead of a hardcore M3 at 90 k anymore, m550i was in my radar until wife also wants a model X as our 2 nd out of 3 cars

But WHY - doesn't BMW update the 5 series 6 cylinder to that in the 3 series??

They’re both the B58 6 cylinder, however in the 3 series it’s tuned to be more sporty whereas in the 5 series is more of a luxury/comfort tune.

It is a good looking car. But even in this great six cylinder form seems like last of a generation that even BMW doesn’t seem to care much about. That Transmission lever looks old. Infotainment as you state is similarly old. To me this used to be the executive sedan. In America the X5 is now the executive sedan and where the bread is buttered. Similar to you I miss the old analog gauges. Other companies mimicking round old school gauges do digital instruments better. Bottom line, majority of people who used to buy 5 series now buy Teslas. Tesla has won the game.
