I just brought one of these fully spec’d. 540i w adaptive suspension, auto park, self driving. It’s insane! I didn’t even know it had those extra packages when I brought it

BMW makes the best engines in the world regarding power, torque, fuel consumption for normal production cars.

i had a g30 540 rwd, its an amazing luxury car. The b58 is one of the best engines ever mass produced, period. however its not a sports sedan at all, its simply too big (CLAR 7 series chassis) to feel sporty during turn-ins. However once the weight has settled and youre powering out of a corner thats when you get a sprinkling of the classic bmw magic. The plus side of this portliness is the ride is fantastic, its supple yet firm while controlled.
Regarding the gesture control, you can set it to some specific command like "next track" with a V finger gesture and it is incredibly convenient and useful when I dont want to move my eyes and stare at the road straight ahead and i can just wave my hand to do that. feel like a boss. No reviewer ever do the gesture control justice. you need to live with it to truly understand how convenient it is.

I prefer the B57 😉 but the B58 is nice too.

I rode in an E-Class once and it felt pretty firm to me. However I have no real reference points so I wouldn't know 😅

My F10 XDRIVE was pretty floaty too until I ditched the factory suspension and installed a set of KW V3 coilovers. It didn’t instantly turn into an E39, but it made a HUGE difference in how sporting it drove. It’s not for everyone as you do lose that floaty boaty luxury car ride, but if handling takes priority over comfort it’s the way to go.
KW makes suspension for the G30 too. 😉

I had a 2018 BMW 540i RWD with the standard suspension, and I loved driving it daily. Very well balanced and never had an issue with the steering as I felt it was very direct and had good enough feed back to tell what the front tires were doing without the over information previous 5-series had, I.e E39 and E60, which you could get tired from feeling the road too much causing you to feel like you had to pay too much attention to the steering to keep the car going straight.
I test drove the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E350 RWD with the standard suspension and it was terrible. Ride quality vs the G30 5-series is a step behind. You could feel the suspension crash and not absorb imperfections in the road the way my G30 540i did.
Your review on the 540i saying the ride wasn't as good kind shocked me as my experience wasn't the same.

The torque limitation in a turn is due to rear wheel steering, not x-drive.

Above the M5 there is also the M5 Competition and, as the most powerful variant, the M5 CS.

drive a 535i everyday!, the old 3.0 turbo remains fun and gets 30mpg most long drives

Really interesting to hear about the torque limit with steering at an angle. That's disappointing

It's a modern car. That's just what happens when you make a car modern.

Do the side windows offer UV-A protection?

What makes you think a RWD model would limit torque less coming out of corners? If safety is a reason for limiting torque on corner exit, I would guess torque limitation might be more on a RWD model.
My gut says there must be a way to disable this nanny. I would hope my gut is correct.

I almost got "T" boned several times in my G30 when DSC kicked in on a left turn and the motor died. Hope the BMW BEV cars don't have the DSC feature.

Which would you recommend, the 540i or the M550i?
Also concerned about the reliability of the V8 engine.

The M550i is for people who want an M5. Everyone else should get the 540i.

Recently test drove this car and was completely disappointed. It needs acoustic windows and air suspension like the e class or a6 for more luxurious ride.

Not your typical BMW power put down characteristics. 🤔
