    Are there any of the books in this haul that take your fancy? Are there any that you have read and would highly recommend for others?

    If you revealed you were a narrator of audiobooks I would not be surprised. I always wish you could read past the first paragraph. I have a copy of Middlemarch and if you were to do a group read I would love to join in! Having your level of insight along the read would be amazing.

      Thank you so much! I have only narrated the 39 Steps, which is on my channel, though I am slowly recording Great Expectations by Dickens. It's fun but demanding.
      A group read would be fun and I love your insights on books too, which is why I am so pleased to have found Shipwrecks thanks to you. Great book! However, I wouldn't know how to host a group read😀

      @@tristanandtheclassics6538 You've read Shipwrecks! How wonderful! I hope I get to hear about it on your channel.
      To be honest I'm not sure how one would host a group read on RUclips without having access to the live feature but there must be a way! In any case, the day you do a group read comes, I'll be joining in. :)

      @@tristanandtheclassics6538 I have only read ‘Heart of Darkness’ earlier this year. What a gripping story! I found out later that ‘Apocalypse Now’ was based on that book, (or I might not have read it) Right now I’m reading Don Quixote. I’m on page 269 now and hopefully it gets better. I like humor as long as no one gets hurt. It may be awhile before I get into Secret Agent. I don’t mean to pry, but are you an English teacher?

    I have read Goethes "Die Leider des Junger Werther" in High School and loved it a lot.
    My daughter is 11 yo now and because her favourite teacher told her, that he loves Goethe she is reading this book now too and also loves his style of writing. I'm a bigger fan of Franz Kafka. Because we live is Austria we have the pleasure to read the original german version.
    I have heard the Audiobook to George Orwells Animal Farm and really want to read 1984. First because I was born in this year and second because Orwell is brilliant.
    Except of the Decameron, that I have heard of plenty so far and also have it on my reading list I didn't know any of the other works so far.

      Hey Charmaine, hope you are doing great! I know what you mean by George Eliot appearing intimidating. May I recommend that you read Silas Marner? That will de-mystify Eliot for you. She has a lovely way with her prose. I think the main issue is that Eliot tended to write pretty epic stuff. At least Silas Marner is of a reasonable length.😂

    I loved The Mill on the Floss, that's an attractive cover. I like dystopian novels, read the usual and now I'm reading The City of Endless Night by Milo Hastings. Also, liked Margaret Atwood's dystopias. Goethe sounds interesting, The Sorrows of Young Werther, I'll get it, good enough for Nappy, good enough for me as I conquer the dust in my bookshelves. I'll read it after Tudortember, I'm learning a lot on Elizabethan construction processes from Devices and Desires by Kate Hubbard and lots on poor Mary, Queen of Scots and her sad ending. Great Tudor gossip too. Middlemarch, not for me and I liked Silas Marner. Big Brother is watching you, love that book.

    Hi Tristan, thank you for this great video. I like Animal Farm and 1984, but thank you for the recommendations, I'm leaning toward Sorrow of Young Werther next. Also, which editions are these? And have you heard of We by Yevgeny Zamyatin (1921), the Russian dystopian that inspired Orwell's 1984? It's a fantastic and clever book 📚

      You are welcome Chandna. The Orwell books are great. I hope you enjoy Sorrows of Werther. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on it. It is different in that it is 18th century and particularly stylistic.
      I've been wanting to read WE by Zamyatin for ages. It is likely to be in an upcoming book haul as it's on my wishlist😃 You've really made me want to read it now.❤👍

      @@tristanandtheclassics6538 thank you I certainly will, I saw Sorrows in my local amnesty shop for £2, I hope it's still there. I think you would also enjoy another dystopian; One by David Karp 1952, it's just brilliant, very Kafkaesque.

      Yes it was a surprise to me too. I know that there are mixed reactions to this work. Which is probably to be expected from a 15th century book. The style is going to be very different to the norm. But I can't wait to see how life was beheld and experienced back then through the eyes of a person who was there.😀

    Nice haul, although the Decameron makes me want to jump off a tall building. What's your background, Tristan -- are you a literature professor of some sort?

    • @tristanandtheclassics6538
      @tristanandtheclassics6538  2 года назад +6

      OK I'll keep that in mind when I fully dive into the Decameron.😂
      As for my background, I'm afraid I have no formal literary training. I was fortunate to have a scholarly father with the most remarkable interest in books and history.
      I have a background in Public Speaking which is oddly rather useful when it comes to studying and dissecting ideas.
      More than anything though, like you Troy, I have a passion for books. Specifically a passion for story and history. The human experience. I'm sorry if this is all a bit vague but I don't wish to be a boor and go on about my insignificant self.
      How about you? What's your background?

    • @troytradup
      @troytradup 2 года назад +2

      @@tristanandtheclassics6538 My background -- or let's call it my history -- is ridiculously complex and convoluted. But the core is pretty typical: lonely kid with a smidgen of writing talent and books instead of friends; later I found friends who were both a blessing and a curse. I've had a some success as a writer, but I've never been particularly ambitious in the right way. Now I'm old, and writing and I (and books and I) have a bit of a love/hate relationship. But I'm very happy to have found a BookTuber who reads beyond the latest bestsellers and like-bait books!
