I'm a little lost - where do you get the pigment and what kind of chalk do you use? Is the chalk the same as plaster of paris? What kind of oil is used? This seems to be a lot of work when ya can just buy gouache already made inexpensively. Help us out more here, please.
I don't know mutch about the matrials or the cost to make gouche but I think people make it on there own if they have a certain consistency or color they want there paint to be. It would also be kind of cool to have a painting that was done with paint you mixed yourself
Thanks a lot for sharing this, very helpful! I recently tried to make my own watercolor and while i like the result, i noticed that it is a lot less smooth on the paper compared to other watercolors. Do you have an idea what i might have done wrong?
Hi Mary, So glad you used this video! If the paint is gritty, it is likely a result of the pigment needing more mulling. Each pigment mulls differently and some are more gritty than others. Certain pigments require the use of a muller if pushing and smoothing the pigment is not enough with the palette knife. Certain pigments require more medium also. Hope this helps! Good luck!
For watercolors, you get the best results when you disperse the pigments with grain neutral alcohol and distilled water with a roughened glass muller on a roughened glass plate until the alcohol has evaporated before adding the medium.
School chalk is usually made from gypsum (calcium sulfate) whereas Champagne chalk is calcium carbonate. Kremer pigments offer excellent pigments (and Champagne chalk), but you can also get pigments by Schmincke, Sennelier and other brands, if you want to pay more. Just be aware that some pigments are extremely toxic, e.g. cadmiums (reds) and cobalts (blues). Do a thourough research before you embark on the adventure of making your own colours. A simple way of making your own gouache colours without going through the hassle of working with pigments, is to mix Champagne chalk or even Chinese white into your watercolour tube paints. The white will alter the colour, of course, but it will also make it more opaque therefore transforming watercolour into gouache.
I have an easier way thought it doesn’t exactly qualify as real gouache but it works Add 1 table of paint 3 drops of oil Mix Add 1 teaspoon of chalk/cornflour works too Done

Joy Gill IKR! 🙉
Where do you get the Chalk?
can you change your ready made watercolors into gouache by adding chalk?
I dont think so or it wont be as good as regular gouache because gouache adds more pigment and lesser binder
The watercolor medium is called Gum Arabic..not oil..
what goes into making a paint light fast?
It has a lot to do with the pigment quality some pigments have higher lightfastness than others
awesome video. can you give details what brand of pigments you used. Also does chalk mean the same school chalk we can grind and use it ?
