Auckland used to be the NZ capital but was moved to wellington because the north was afraid that the south island would secede during the Dunedin gold rush, so they chose the centrally located city of wellington.
Brasilia, Brazil and Canberra, Australia share some similarities: they were both designed and built to be the national capital, both were built inland and both are relatively small compared to the more famous cities. My husband is from Brazil and I am from Australia.
I think the strangest capital not mentioned is Amsterdam. The Parliament, embassies, Royal palaces are in The Hague (near Rotterdam). The reason it's the capital was when Napoleon conquered the Netherlands he moved the capital from The Hague to Amsterdam. When the Netherlands was freed the Parliament and government moved back to The Hague, but Amsterdam kept the title of capital. On a note about South Africa, it's not the Federal Republic to have different legislative capitals and administration, Germany and Bolivia are just two examples. Most people and in most books would regard Pretoria has South Africa's capital and not not name 3 cities.

Crazy, as I was just searching for a video like this today and thought of what the strangest capital cities are a couple days ago... Anyways, man, awesome video!
I'm from Brazil. A few things you didn't mentioned about Brasília: not only in the middle of nowhere, it looks and feel weird as a city on the moon. It was designed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, and it's listed as UNESCO heritage site. Beautiful (and weird). It's shaped like an airplane when seen from above. Being in the Federal District (like DC) it doesn't have a Mayor. It doesn't have a recognizable local accent.
True , i think the only ones that are truly "weird" here are Ashgabat and Nay pyi taw just because they're pretty empty and look super unique compared to most other places , you could also say that Pyongyang is weird just because it's kinda like a time capsule and has very few cars .
as an Azerbaijanian Turk(you know it is one fo the Turkic countries) I was born in Baku and living in another Turkic city İstanbul. both are my homeland.
La Paz and Sucre are both the capitals of Bolivia. I'm also very surprised you didn't bring up the capital of Equatorial Guinea, Malabo, as it's on a small island that's not even close to the mainland. Wpild have thought it was your #1.
Lagos could be another "mistaken capital". Abuja is the current capital of Nigeria, though I believe Lagos has been the capital in the past. Similarly, Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire. It's the largest city in that country by far, and used to be the capital, but Yamoussoukro now holds this distinction. As with the case in Tanzania, where Dar lost its capital status to the smaller Dodoma, it can be assumed that these countries moved their capitals to be more centrally located, as all three of the aforementioned big cities are on the coasts of countries (which all happen to be landlocked on their other three sides).
Washington, D.C. was created out of wilderness a few years after the 13 original states decided to unite as a single nation after the Constitional Convention in 1789. Before that each state had been considered an independent nation of its own with the 'capital' rotating among different cities before they agreed on the need for a single capital city that was roughly in the center of the Atlantic coastline and was soon named for the 1st President George Washington. Although it had had earlier settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria within its designated territory, it wasn't long before the legislators saw the need to construct an entirely new city to contain the three branches of the US Government. However, the land was such a swampy estuary prone to frequent flooding that few wanted to relocate there and for decades one of the few 'clean' diversions was to watch Congress in session and foreign ambassadors would receive hardship pay for having to be posted in such a remote outpost with mud tracks for roads and few housing options. Even the First Lady Abigail Adams wound up hanging the family wash in the unfinished East Wing in the early 1800's - after she herself had carried buckets of Potomac River water to the half-constructed President's House to do said laundry! There was even talk of abandoning it for other previously established cities such as Philadelphia and New York City but then the War of 1812 broke out that had the British burning down the President's House and temporarily occupying the new nation's capital. Suddenly, everyone decided to rebuild it to something for all citizens to be proud of with wide avenues, gleaming buildings and drained swamps. Of course, that wasn't the last challenge Washington has had to face down the years- including being entirely surrounded by Confederate state of Virginia and Border State of Maryland during the US Civil War with access to the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay constantly at risk of being cut off by hostile forces!
I live in the suburbs of Ottawa, the capital of Canada. It's a generally boring city but it's safe and there is a lot of economic opportunities. We're also very close to nature.
