I hired the lift back 508 recently for a week. I was really impressed, it was a lovely car to punt around SE QLD. The engine had an revy vibe to it and I quiet liked the pointy steering on country roads. I was particularly keen to try out the steering wheel due to the mixed press reviews. I’ve got to say I’m a compete convert. Having the steering wheel a little lower and the dash instruments positioned higher worked rather well. Another area I think it did well was the autonomous driving modes. On the highway the car literally drove itself. I kept in lane around corners and slowed and sped up again when following traffic. Things I didn’t like, rear seats weren’t the best with tapered headline. You’d feel a bit hemmed in. But I think the wagon version fixes that. The other issue is the price. It’s definitely cheaper than the established luxury brands but $70k plus still feels like a lot of money. It would be interesting to see a comparison against an A4 or Volvo.

I am a big Peugeot fan and can attest to their quality. Current car is a T9 308 with 1.6THP engine, built solid, never had any issues and drives like a dream! Quality cars and far superior to any of the Asian options, but the pricing is getting out of hand in this country.

  • @nizm0man
    @nizm0man Год назад +7

I was seriously considering one before COVID lockdown (until they announced their new 308 wagon), they were around the $60k mark drive away with options. But the Mazda 6 wagon still exists (less than $60k with 2.5L turbo and options) so this has no chance for over $70k (N.S.W. drive away prices). If you're going to spend $70k, you'd get a VW Passat R Line, 206 kW with AWD. Even the regular Passat is $65k.
Peugeot set itself to fail with their pricing and that is sad, I want them to succeed here. $55k for 308 wagon, Golf wagon is $44k. 308 hybrid will be $75k (their Aus prices same as NZ), Corolla hybrid is $42k. Why does Peugeot think they're $10k better than the competition?

    • @hsv215i

Same, I was thinking about it at $60k which I thought was still a bit much. I could get a WRX wagon for $55k. But at $70K its not even an option

I bought this car, same colour, in March 2020. I don’t see any issue with the screen and it’s “piano keys”. Very easy to use. The steering wheel is great, best gear shifter ever, and the overall interior design is fantastic and different. The piano black on the console is a pain but am planning to get it recovered at some time in the near future.
I’ve had many comments about it since I got it, like “is that a Peugeot” and “nice car”. I bought this car as I wanted a wagon. I didn’t want anything sporty, just a car to get around for me and my dogs. It was either this or a boring old Mazda. I do a lot of freeway driving and I get around 6.7km per 100L. It’s now done 107000 KM and I haven’t had any problems. Did a bit of country driving on some fairly rough roads in the southwest and it’s a very good “tourer”.
If you’re looking a for a wagon, you should look at this option.

If you don't know why a front wheel drive car has the form of a transmission tunnel you're opinions start to worry me. So let me clarify if you don't appreciate this... One way or another modern cars have to have a certain stiffness without adding too much weight or engineering with otheplaces where interferes with other stuff. The form of a centre tunnel is a very significant chassis designers tool to add this stiffness without rediculous compromise of manufacturing and cost... go ask any maufucaturer. Notice how big modern car tunnels are compared with those of 30 years ago.

I really want this to be my next car. Our family love wagons and hate SUVs. The looks of this car are fantastic, but I sure hope what was reviewed is not accurate otherwise I’ll have to shop elsewhere. You’re not wrong when you say all too many wagons don’t get released here, it’s so disappointing. The lack of wireless connectivity is terrible and even worse the fact they haven’t added it in the last few years with an update - but what car company actually gets infotainment right? They seem to produce nothing but laggy systems that don’t work properly from reports I’ve read. Mine have always been average at best. Most importantly though, I really hope this car is better to drive than described like I thought it was. Our Renault Megane GT wagon has been excellent.

I've been driving this 508sw as a hybrid for 2 years now. The hybrid hasn't got a spare tire due to the batteries for the hybrid powertrain.
I really like driving the car. But the car is much to small. I'm 1m75 and fit very nicely behind the steering wheel. But a person over 1m90 will have very much difficulties enterin g the car.
The roofline is just TOO low.
Also the booth (trunk) is just too small. It doesn't any longer swallow a bike.
For going on a holiday with 2 kids on the back seat the trunk is just too small. It won't swallow the luggage for the 4 occupants.
The backseat doesn't even allow 3 kids-seats to be installed. It only has 2 Isofix-systems, not 3.
The pockets in the door don't even fit a water bottle and are filled very rapidly with the stuff that are standard in your car.
I like driving the car, but will NEVER EVER buy this car a second time. For a stationwagon it's just too small.

This is my favorite car. Well-- if someone gave me a Peugeot wagon I would drive that. If I had to buy with my own money, I would buy the 208. It's lighter, looks as great, and is more fun as well while a third the price!!! But the 308 engines suck. And so does the price.$50,000? My Volvo V50 I got used for $1700!!!!!! Is it worth 25 times the price???? Heck no. But it's still my favorite car. The 208 is a close second. Peugeot just rocks. I wish we had them in the USA. Maybe Alfa will bring over a hatch soon. The 208 is a bargain at 16k. These Peugeot cars outdo even Volvo wagons and hatchbacks. They need to fix the steering wheel though.

Good report but underwhelmed by the car at its pricepoint. A question nobody answers other than to say that it was on the script. Why don't you say Android Auto and Apple Carplay in that order?
My reasons: Android has circa 60% of smartphone market and also, alphabetically, Android comes before Apple too.
Trivial but annoying unless Apple sponsor you.
This car is close to Tesla Model Y money, I would buy the Y because it is better packaged, faster and cheaper to fuel even at supercharger rates.

Apple doesn’t sponsor anybody. I imagine the answer is you probably say what you use first, and most of our journalists use iPhones. Also, when we talk to car companies, they tell us that even though Android has higher market share generally speaking, iPhones have a higher market share of people buying new cars.

@@chasingcars Hi Tom, I have just had another look at your 2021 review of the 508 and it is an objective, knowledgeable report but I think that Andrew comes across as just not liking the car. How many Australians automatically say they dislike any new French car that comes onto the market? Most of them would never venture into a showroom with French cars let alone drive one. I have owned many French cars over the years, although not since 2000, and enjoyed my time with them and I recently drove the new 308 which is a great car but I was critical of the meagre power from the 3 cylinder motor. I wish Peugeot would give us some sporty models with upgraded motors and not have this heavy emphasis on economy but I guess it's a European thing.
