i love both versions so very much but god the way thom delivers the “you’ll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking” followed by the “what do you look like when you’re nude?” tears me apart man
Yeah the way he screams… I could be crazy but it feels like a continuation of the cathartic vocals of kurt. Feels like Radiohead took the torch of subversive rock music from nirvana. That’s how it feels for me. I understand that’s not the objective through-line of goadedness, but for me Jeff Buckley and kurt cobain turned into thom yorke… somehow
😂😂😂 I thought the same exact thing, but then I realized that it's flea. I'm not sure why they chose this as the artwork since this is a Radiohead song and not Atoms for peace
I keep coming back to this and I can’t work out why. The In Rainbows final release is certainly more polished, but there’s something about this version: the angsty, vulnerable vocals and the organ make it a thing of beauty
This version is a warning to yourself while you're still in time to do something. The "final cut" is the defeated, worn out man warning either his past self or somebody else. The second one hits me harder.
Overall I prefer the in rainbows version, but I really love the ending of this one especially the way Thom is singing his soul out with the "you go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking" part - pure emotion.
I agree, that's why I am so shocked to see so many people on here preferring this version. It's so unsure of itself. The melodies are there. Just not the cohesion. The organ is cool but not Radiohead. I prefer Thom's acapella of the melody Jonny's playing on the organ here. They def honed this into perfection for In Rainbows. This is too sloppy, which can be great...But not after Nude from IR. Plus it does not have Jonny's travis picking, which sounds so good through his AC30.
Not completely sure about these, but I think these are the lyrics: Don't get any big ideas They're not gonna happen That thin stewardess Her skirt in a mess You don't stand a chance What do you look like when you're nude? What do you look like when you're nude? What do you look like where you're Soulless reflection in the other person's eyes Deathbed, first home, damaged goods Subject, object, verb So don't get any big ideas They're not gonna happen You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking What do you look like when you're nude? Dural Desgraçadão Virado na Cachaça It’s pretty obvious this song is portraying a character, it’s not meant to literally be his own perspective. He mentioned in notes and interviews in the 90s that this song was about men who seek fulfillment through the sexual objectification of women. I remember in one entry from the old website he painted the picture of a married businessman eyeing young girls half his age with predatory intentions. While I think the final lyrics are much better, more nuanced and emotionally resonant, the lyrics in this iteration seem pretty critical of the mindset they’re depicting. It’s about a man who has achieved “happiness” (purchased his first home, found a wife, started a family, fulfills the “successful” role as dictated by capitalism) but nonetheless feels empty which results in him satiating that emptiness through hollow, dehumanizing sexual encounters. It can be read as a criticism of the objectification of women and capitalism’s role in perpetuating it. EDIT: here’s Thom’s description of the song from all the way back on the Radiohead website during the OK Computer era: “ nude* it is a mans world. and this one is very confused and will have sex with anything woman who comes within a mile radius. but feels bad about it. so doesnt.”
@@RockyStradlin Same, also because this is the first version i heard many years ago,i always miss the organ in the in the new version. And the emotional depth.
Takes me back to the old live versions of this when it was called Big Ideas (Don't Get Any) and Jonny jumped between Hammond organ and guitar and Thom played electric piano.
They played this version on the OKC tour. I vividly remember them playing this “Banana Co,” and “Killer Cars,” which I hadn’t heard despite already having been a superfan and hunting down their b-sides for years. I love the passion in this version ... but In Rainbows is an undeniably GORGEOUS album. Kid A will always be my favorite, but In Rainbows (and the second disc) ... it has an undeniable quality to it. I really wish Thom had won the Hail To The Thief fight, that album was recorded in two weeks, and it’s a great album and all, but when you compare it to their other releases - I feel like if they had given it 4-6 months even it would’ve come out even better. I still cannot freaking believe they wrote the 30, (34 at least if you’re counting the different versions of spinning plates and morning bell) mindblowingly original songs in just about a year. To pull that off after just getting off the OK Computer tour is almost Beatles level “whaaaaaat the eff did they do?! How?!!!”
Radiohead is superior to the Beatles. The Beatles never went to the top of totally different genre. I listen to a lot more electronic music than rock. Kid A was a serious accomplishment for a rock band!
@@ginzo666 so was Sgt Pepper man. They recorded that on two 4 tracks they connected together. Great song , both versions. Certainly this version is more raw, less polished, authentic…. But the In rainbows version is a Masterpiece, the strings, the voice, the raspy percussive guitar and the ambient sounds of Ed in the background.
