11:15 They were trying to install a glitch chip (Probably a Picofly, Hwfly or Instinct-NX), to run unsigned code like custom firmware and homebrew. To install the mod the chip needs to connect to the capacitors on the APU for glitching and to the DAT0 point on the eMMC on the back of the mainboard. The capacitors near the eMMC have solder on them because they are being used as anchor points for a DAT0 adapter which sildes under the eMMC.
You’re doing something very cool especially in this climate of ‘once it’s broken just replace it’. Kinda gives me hope for humanity and helps me unlearn that mentality myself.
I am always surprised when I watch this channel and NRF on how many shops do such a poor work when they are supposed to be professionals. Nothing is more frustrating for a tech trying to clean up someone else's poor work. Also reduces the chance of a successful repair.
My guess? The bulk of these repair shops jobs are 90% replacing the batteries. If it’s a problem that goes beyond that, they give it a go (regardless if they know what they are doing or not).
@25:48 the max chip (bottom left, just right of the speaker connector) normally causes that short on the BQ capactior, remove the max chip and check for short, if its gone, thats your issue.
I can’t tell you how incredible these videos are. You have kept me entertained, but also vastly increased my ability to understand and work on these things for myself. Thanks for providing me with the confidence to replace my switch game card reader. The replacement that I ordered didn’t work, but I was able to desolder the game card reading component from the board and put it on the original board. Long story short, I have a fully functional switch again. For over a year I considered my physical switch games unplayable. Really appreciate you, and eagerly awaiting your next upload
They were trying to add a mod chip. Part of that includes cutting away at the shield and soldering wires to different points. The bridged caps around the processor is where the ribbon cable connects for the mod chip
Looks like a picofly failed install to me. Someone brand new to soldering probably saw a YT video thinking it would be easy and killed their switch. RIP.
21:35 You know the console is going to work after the repair attempt when it gets fully put back together before it's 'tested' again. ;) Great job Steve.
I was very disappointed when I had to send my Switch OLED in for repairs. It seemed like a simple fix of replacing the Wi-Fi chip, but the repair shop just gave me a brand new console and no information about why they decided to deem my console "unfixable". All my data was on the old console and is now lost forever. Unfortunately, because I had a warranty, I did not try to repair it myself. I love the work you did in this video, keep on fixing!

Watching you do this makes me feel like I can do this but reality snaps me back to knowing I am no where near doing that kind of repair. Can’t even find the reason for the pop shut down for the 3DS I am fixing even when the speakers were replaced and no damage on the ribbon cable 💀. So much to learn to catch up. So far I did the simple Ds lite fixes. Saved 13/16 with 3 motherboards being dead with no way to get them to work. Inspired by you.
@@hawkfeather6802 the screen is new…sadly, it’s not the screen 😅. I have tested the screen on another system and it works. I replaced the speakers even though the original is ok and still same thing. It’s weird
25:45 I believe a short in the chip to the right of the charging port can sometimes be caused by the chip to the left, the one right below the shield you replaced in the previous one. I think that's the bq chip, but don't quote me on that. You should try replacing that one.
After you replaced the chip on the 4th switch. It appears to be a bridged resistor right above the chip you just replaced. At 24:47 in the video it looks like two resistors are touching.
You werent kidding about the screws stripping so easily. I had a buldging battery that ended up damaging the fan and backplate, so i did got it working again but will have to replace the screws lol
As someone already pointed out, Switch #3 is definitely a victim of someone trying to install a modchip on it. I saw a vid of someone installing the said modchip that's why it looked familiar.
Yep. RUclips had recommended me such videos, and I often notice that they avoid including certain terms in their videos to prevent them from being found by Nintendo's legal department.
I love these handheld repair videos, always interesting. Id love to see you repair some PSP E1000 models since they're such a pain to fix as I've come to learn recently.
@@Tronicsfix I believe it wasn't immediately released in the USA, mainly Japanese and Asian markets so it may be harder to find broken ones, theyre a budget PSP so the internals are kinda fragile and frustrating to work on.
The OLED is showing typical signs of a failed modchip install. the guides reccomend cutting the bracket so it doesn't hurt the ribbon you have to install.
Hey man, when you were working on the "modded" switch, I'm very well aware of what the mod is and how it works. The person who attempted to mod this is clearly new to soldering. No flux used(or they used the terrible paste flux), too much heat on the capacitors on the SoC, and they scraped wayy too much solder mask around the via (not the larger rectangular ground pad next to it) to the top right of the cpu (where the shielding was cut). Very surprised they didn't Bridge that via to the ground plane next to it. That is a cpu clock point used by a modchip for timing when to inject a payload.
Not bad at all! Glad to hear that you got some of the Switch's fixed! And hopefully you can use some of the parts from other ones if you ever need to repair more Switch's.
I have a Xbox one controller that you might get a kick out of. the battery contacts is bent battery pack that powers it broken and the left trigger is having a problem and it’s a sob to get to charge in the first place lol love your stuff ! I hope your videos get the views, likes and subscribes they deserve.
I always manage to blow tiny capacitors and whatnot off the board and have to reseat them when I'm trying to replace chips/ports with hot air. If I turn the airflow down I can't seem to get enough heat on some boards with extensive ground planes. What kind of settings are you using for this type of job?
It can be tricky. I leave my station on pretty high airflow but just don't put it very close to my work piece. I usually have quite a bit of flux on what I'm working on and that helps things stay in place too.
For the OLED Switch, they were installing a modchip most likely, for which you need to solder to the CPU (SP1 & SP2) and more on the OLED model. You need microsoldering knowledge and a microscope, but a lot of people try to do it by eye and mess it up. EDIT: As mentioned below my comments, their soldering to DAT0 went very very wrong, which is also needed for an OLED install
I’ve modded quite a few OLED switches, and it’s not an easy task unless you’re experienced. Seeing that mutilated board was heartbreaking.. like what kinda hamfisting was going on lol. Glad you were able to resurrect it!
