    Crazy video. The amount of games being made is just insane - I wonder how many will even make back their budgets - I would guess 10% at most, probably less. Feels like we might be better served if lot of the people making games did something else, as harsh as it sounds. Anyway, for me most anticipated ones are Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Bloodlines 2, Gothic Remake, Avowed, DA Dreadwolf and Wukong. I am also curious about New Arc Line and Thaumaturge. Neo Berlin and Repo Man looks weirdly good considering I never heard of them. Oh and Felvidek is pure bad assery.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  4 месяца назад +4

      General rule based on my experience, of the games I end up listing, 10% will be actually like a full-on success. 70% will be okay, not failures but they don't blow up. 20% usually fail, those would be games that get cancelled or die on launch. That's not counting all the games I don't list. And this is a good thing because you cannot have diamonds without the rough. You don't get good games unless they're built on a mountain of bad games. When there are no bad games, there's no competition and the genre is dead. You need grassroots for others to grow taller.

    • @8Paul7
      @8Paul7 4 месяца назад

      @@GamerZakh good point, but I think the issue is also that there are many, many good-to-great games that are also failing commercially these days. Alone in the Dark, Outcast 2 or even listed Thaumaturge come to mind off the top of my head. I feel like there is too many people making games for the amount of people actually buying them (also because huge part of the market is captured by stuff like Fortnite and other GaaSes).

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  4 месяца назад +3

      @@8Paul7 Yeah but that's always been the case, it's just we've forgotten all the games that failed in the past. We remember Starcraft, but forget Warbreeds. We remember Impossible Creatures, but forget Dominant Species. So when we think back it seems like it was all good but that good was still built on a mountain of bad.

    Overall this is a great overview of upcoming RPGs. What I don't get though, is why quite some of the segments are outdated when it comes to releases. Example: you are skeptical about Last Epoch because it's been in Early Access for so long and you mention it might release in February 2024. But by the time you released this video (about a week ago), Last Epoch has long since gone out of Early Access and had a successful release.
    This makes some segments misleading.
    I get that it takes a long time to craft videos like these, and the world has changed since you started making this video. But it would have helped if you had edited the video and at least added textual information with updates on top of your spoken narrative.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  3 месяца назад

      Ah because I'm a solo creator and it takes me many months to make a video like this. I release parts as I complete them then try to update and compile a 'megalist' to cover everything once I finish the full list. I try to edit it with the latest info but it's a LOT. I actually edited and re-recorded many segments but it's easy to miss things. There's a reason no other creator does this, I'm trying to do what is generally impossible unless you have a team.
      Having said that, I did re-edit the Last Epoch segment and the only problem with it right now is that it's talking about the release in the future tense. I don't express much scepticism about it, I'm just saying it has been in early access for a long time and that it's releasing in February, and it did release in Feb so that's still right. I didn't have time to fix all the tenses throughout the video, but the content for Last Epoch is accurate outside of it went from 20K user reviews to 80K. If you infer a bit, then you'll know Feb was in the past and that it would be like watching an older video later.
      Basically, change the release date of this video to January and you wouldn't have a problem watching this today. I wish I could do this by January but this video exists like this or not at all. Because to fix every problem would mean I'd not be able to do anything else with my time and the list would be way too late. Rough estimate, it takes about 40-60 work hours to make a single normal list video, meaning this video is between 240-420 work hours. So that's like 3 months of full time work if I was doing literally nothing else and I can tell you, this video won't pay 3 months of rent lol.

    Metaphor now has a release date on Steam of October 11th! I would also like to see more turn-based, party based, cRPGs, rather than all these flashy real-time almost shooter adventures! For Unicorn Overlord and other games like it, seem to use the "Me Go - You Go". This is the closest to real battles, as you set your army off, and then hope it goes to plan, and the enemy move where you think they will. The old game "Combat Mission" had this system.

    How much time does it take to make one of those lists? There's a few games in there that are already released, but I won't hold it against you since it's an awful lot of RPGs to research and list.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  4 месяца назад +1

      For this kind of list, it's put together over many months, which is why the phrasing is sometimes a bit off when this final version is finally made. I try to fix it with a few run throughs in editing. Generally though I still keep the curation updated and although some of these have already released I'm keeping this as a '2024' list, so even those that have released can stay. But games that released end of 2023 have been removed.

Yeah Vengeance is an enhancement but it's not even to the level of being a remaster, plus I don't even list remasters as upcoming games either unless they're of a very old game. Gothic is here because it's a whole remake from the ground up of a very old game. I also list Age of Mythology in my strategy list because that's a huge rebuild of a very old game. Vengeance is just a sizeable update of a 3 year old game, I wouldn't say that's a whole new upcoming game.

    Having lived through the entire history of gaming, I don't see the draw toward pixelated games. Back when they were all there was to play, I daydreamed about the future, when games would start looking better and better.
    Well, here we are. Yet pixel games seem to have an audience. I suppose it's the novelty factor for those who didn't have to go through the growing pains of gaming.

    • @GamerZakh

      @@Quazi-Moto It's the opposite. The ones who like neopixel art styles are the ones who lived through the pixel era.
      Think of it like impressionism paintings, or micromosaics, or pointillism, or crochet. It's just an art style by choice, not a limitation of technology.
      It's what happened when photography was invented. When everyone could make realistic images, painting had to go stylistic to be anything different. In this age of Unreal Engine 5 where a solo dev in a garage can make a photorealistic game, the realism gets boring.
      Remember, the pixel art you see today was not possible in the 80s. It's neopixel, basically a new art style.

      @@GamerZakh Wait, so you're saying the biggest audience for neopixel is a bunch of old heads like me?
      I get that it's a choice devs made, and no longer the best they can do with what tech allows -- and good riddance to diagonal lines that look like ugly, wonky staircases, good riddance to building everything with too-large squares.
      Good thinking on the the devs' part, really; to stylize a game to look so differently from realism, and stand out from the ever-growing crowd.
      I can give the neopixel games their just respects. For me, it just feels like going backwards when I play one. But yeah, having choices is never a bad thing.

    I'm not sure why you seem to imply that Gameplay footage without UI is not actual gameplay footage. It's very easy to remove the UI of a game while you're playing it from the developer's perspective

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  4 месяца назад

      Because gameplay footage without the UI is not gameplay, it's a machinima. 'In-engine footage' is not gameplay. Sure it's easy to hide the UI, what's difficult is having a functional UI to show off with real gameplay. If they just hid it, why is there no footage of showing it? Also, I've been listing games like this for over a decade. I could not tell you how many games were faking 'gameplay' in their trailers. Often they are just cinematics from the game, sometimes the game is severely underdeveloped and doesn't even have a UI yet, or worst case, literal animations of things that have not been implemented. There are so many trailers today where they are literally just an animation, like animated in video/animation software. Blatant ones even animate a mouse cursor moving around.

    • @Luis-Torres
      @Luis-Torres 4 месяца назад

      @@GamerZakh while it is true that there are plenty of purely cinematic trailers with only animation. There were plenty of examples in this video where the game was show gameplay without UI, and it was definitely actual gameplay 😅
      UI is easy to show. The only hard part about it is making it intuitive for the player to understand (that's where UX comes in) which is part of why I imagine game devs tend to leave it out of trailers (but also because UI isn't really appealing from a showcase perspective).
      Either way, it is very easy to tell when you are looking at real gameplay vs. a cinematic or animation

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  4 месяца назад

      @@Luis-Torres Yes, I have worked in game design. I have a close friend who is currently a UI/UX professional. And it's not about whether the footage being shown is from actual gameplay or not. It's that without the UI, it's not gameplay in my books. The UI is part of gameplay, hiding it makes a nice cinematic experience, but you're not showing gameplay, you've made a machinima.
      If a game has shown literally zero full gameplay, I don't owe them the benefit of the doubt. I criticised AoE 4's "gameplay" trailer because it was a cinematic. I criticised Homeworld 3's "gameplay trailer" because it was a machinima.
      You can have a cinematic trailer AND a gameplay trailer. But look at something like Fable (the upcoming one). Zero gameplay has been shown. Some point to the character throwing the fireball at the bandit, but is that actually from gameplay? Maybe, maybe not, but I don't owe them the benefit.

    • @Luis-Torres
      @Luis-Torres 4 месяца назад

      @@GamerZakh Well we do agree that you shouldn't give a game trailer any credit that doesn't have gameplay. I'm not disagreeing on any of that. I only disagree on what constitutes "gameplay".
      Gameplay is simply that: gameplay. There are actually some games you can play where you can literally turn off the UI as a player. Does that suddenly not count as gameplay even though a player is actually playing it? I'd be hard pressed to say that it isn't.
      Gameplay has nothing to do with the GUI (I think at this point we should at least be more clear on the terminology). I don't think a trailer needs to show an in-game HUD to prove that it's gameplay. That's all I'm saying.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  4 месяца назад +1

      @@Luis-Torres If you want to get into specifics, specify the games and trailer footage. Each one is an individual case. I've written dissertations on interactive media, so I could get into it, but a RUclips's comment thread is a bit of an uncomfortable place to have such an in-depth discussion.
      In this video, I bring up my scepticism in some cases because of context that isn't always communicated. Maybe I don't say it for other games because those have shown additional footage I didn't use. Or maybe I say it because the publisher has faked footage before. Or maybe I see something that is or isn't there that I didn't mention specifically. Unless you specify a part in the video and clarify with me what I mean, then you might not even know what I'm talking about.

    How can you cover Swordhaven without mentioning that its from the developers of Atom RPG? I think that would have been more informative than going on the whole tangent about nostalgia.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  4 месяца назад +1

      Because Atom RPG is not a household name that's just a go-to reference point. It released over half a decade ago and right this second, about 250 people are playing it on Steam: steamcharts.com/app/552620 - It's not like saying 'Fallout' or 'Final Fantasy' which are more ubiquitous references. Plus, mentioning a 6 year old game doesn't mean it's like a game from 20+ years ago, so I'd have to spend as much time explaining Atom RPG just so people know why I'm even mentioning it. On top of that, generally speaking I don't like mentioning that a game is from the same developers for quality or style reference. Developers often change people or styles, so I kind of only mention it when the game is going to be very different from their last game. Just because Atom RPG was good doesn't mean this one will be, so really there's very little use mentioning it.
