Bravo! My mom did the same and I was very cranky about it, but in retrospect, I'm glad she gave me that separation to do creative things, instead of mindlessly scrolling.
Feel ya. It's hard finding brands that have a unique story/mission. The LP2 had such an incredibly positive effect on my life life. Best decision ever, other than maybe switching to barefoot shoes.
Well done! I am looking to buy my VERY FIRST EVER cell phone . . . been researching for months, and very pleased that Light Phone has added a camera. Thank you for emphasizing the soul factor. This matters to me.
Huge props to you for staying out of the cell phone game; I wish I had never gotten an iPhone 4 all those years back. But in a case where one is needed, a Light Phone is certainly the most soulful way to go about it. (:
I’m honestly jealous that you held out for so long. I had flip phones for many years (after finally caving to cell phones) and it was an old boss who basically forced me to get an iphone for her convenience. I still regret making the change.
I pre-order the light phone 3 yesterday… looking forward to getting it and using it. I have been a long time iPhone user with the odd walk into the dark side with android phones, always buying a smartphone for the cameras but now, I’m tired of constantly looking at the phone day in, day out hence my order for the LP3. 🏴
Right on! I know how you feel, I tried unsuccessfully to lower my screen time for years with various iPhones. The moment I got my LP was the moment I got my life back. It'll be tough waiting for the LP3 to drop, but well worth it. Cheers!
Sir I really appreciate your videos in the light phone. I’ve been looking for good alternatives to smart phone because as a teenager myself I’m getting tired of turning my mind into goop and you’ve been very helpful with that. Thank you
Feel your pain, Julion. I remember when I got my first iPhone and looking back it was def the moment my attention span started going down the drain, ha. Was so glad to get rid of smartphones finally.
this was an incredibly insightful and helpful distinction for anyone considering the move to a minimal/"dumb" phone. I fully expect this video to blow up when these phones officially make it into people's hands. Thank you for making this, Andrew. Great work.
Very true! I love that Joe Hollier is still living in the same modest studio apartment he started out with from day one. Dude stayed consistent with the mission of the LP.
Interesting, it looks similar to Wisephone, but with a more unique company culture. Can't give much of an opinion, since it seems like they haven't decided yet what apps will be on the phone and are still beta testing it.
Excellent video that gets to the heart of why minimal “dumb” phones are appealing. Im sick of researching dumb phones for everyone to be directed at kids and for parental control. The light phones appear to be about taking back our lives from the monster that is digital ease.
Yea, I totally know what you mean. Most dumb phones feel, well, dumb. But the Light Phone feels limited in a deeply intentional way, which makes me happy/proud to own one. Cheers to the minimalist journey!
You expressed exactly why the Light Phone appealed to me when I discovered it some months back. I'm an artist, and I've always been a little strange, and this little square thing speaks to the eclectic, artsy personality in me. I didn't know they made a new edition until today, and it irritates me how people have complained about the price, but not investigated the reasoning. The blog post on the production schedule, the steps taken for the phone's design, the materials chosen, etc. all point to the fact a pre order now would be *investing* in its mass production. You mentioning tinkering in the garage, they have to make these first ones by hand before moving on the final release. That's special stuff! Plus, a metal frame built to last? Yes, please! I currently have a Unihertz Titan because that was the best reviewed phone with a keyboard (I missed my blackberry), very odd design, people always ask me if it's a real phone and not a TV prop, just my personality. But when it goes, Light Phone here I come! I literally use my phone for texting, calling, navigating, notes, sound recording, and some photos. I don't use most of my apps because I've never been phone addicted, just lazy sometimes and don't wanna wait til I get to my laptop/desktop to check stuff.
That phone does actually look kind of Titan-esque, like something a Power Ranger would carry. Does it transform into anything, ha? That would be awesome. I was talking with some guy the other day about how he wanted the Wisephone, because he didn't want people "noticing" or "asking questions" about a phone that looked different. Ironic, given that starting interesting conversations was one of the main things that drew me to the LP2. But yea, cheers to being strange and creative! (:
I've been looking at both phones too... I was also put off by the "censorship" vibes that felt decidely "control" oriented rather than "freedom" oriented. Another well made, creative, informative (and wonderfully creative) video, Andrew. 'Ppreciacha!
Yea, it's an odd vibe for a phone that's supposed to "set you free" to feel so controlling. I definitely feel happier and more creative vibes from the LP. Appreciate you hanging out Jaymi, cheers!
Just read the landing page. The idea of temporarily or permanently blocking apps is interesting, but there would have to be a way to undo it for safety reasons (like if you accidentally disabled the GPS or something), which means that it probably isn't that hard to reinstall addictive apps. I prefer that un-phoneness of the LP3, where the Wisephone and BoringPhone just look like regular smartphones. I'd also be wary of investing in BoringPhone, given the limited info and generic branding. It's not a project I expect to succeed.
@@AndrewFolts I agree, if I can unlock apps the chances are I will, and I don't see the point of a big screen if I'm not supposed to be using it! I've preordered a LP3 so that's what I'm holding out for.
Hey Cody, being a filmmaker I have a Sony a6400 for shooting high quality video, although I really like the idea of the Light Phone 3 for minimalist vlogging. I never use MFA, so I couldn't say on that. For music I use the app NoteBurner, which allows me to download a Spotify playlist. ruclips.net/video/n6QH2U5yo8M/видео.html
Hello since you encouraged me to ask a question I am going to...... I would like a simple basic phone that I could watch RUclips and preferably a touch screen with a qwerty board or even a slide key board for texting does this exist? I just found out the cat 22 was discontinued it seemed like the closest thing. Thank you. This is a neurological issue..... I'm trying to minimally use and reduce electrical interaction but still have GPS, easy voice text etc... My current phone feels very charged even with a hedron equalizer, screen block and glasses... Thank you
Unfortunately, any phone that could access RUclips would also give you access to every other app. That said, it's possible that the LP3, having a camera gallery, might support receiving video files, so you could download a few videos (RUclips Premium subscription), and then send them to the LP3. It would take more work, but also remove any potential for distraction, which could be nice.
@@AndrewFolts thank you. I can't afford the 500 pre buy just yet and wait until next year to actually see it ..but I like the LP3... Going to try the CATS22 temporarily since I bought it for nothing and if T Mobile won't activate it I can return it.
Thank you. I HATE phones. I am being forced to get one by "the world". I have a walkman for music ripped from MY cd's. My question is can the LPIII play FLAC encoded music at high bitrate or is it very basic like mp3? What is it's capacity to store music and does it have memory card compatibility? Thank you.
The LP accepts MP3's only, although it runs on Android, so playing FLAC should be technically possible if they chose to add support. You could email customer service and make a request. But I feel you, it's very frustrating when technology becomes mandatory.
The "Wisephone II" is actually the SAMSUNG Galaxy A15 5G phone ($149) which is why it looks like a smart phone because it is! You are paying over $250 just to use their software to "dumb" down a phone. It's called Techless because there is no tech involved in their company- it's a software company. They don't have this on their website anywhere- it's very deceptive and unethical advertising- just one more red flag! Love the extra info on your video. Thanks!
Wow, I figured that might be the case, but that's pretty shameful that it's literally just a Samsung Galaxy. "Techless" You're right, I guess they really don't have any tech at all, ha. Thanks for digging into this and reporting back, Nicole! Super helpful to people.
@@AndrewFolts you’re welcome. I received my Wisephone II yesterday after a year’s wait so I was greatly disappointed and caught off guard. I spoke to the company too and they told me it’s just my perspective but did explain to me they can change the name legally on their website, they are not a tech company and not a Christian company so they are okay with being deceptive and unethical. But their perspective is that they are not being deceptive on their website at all. They buried this fact in one of their daily emails. You only read it if someone was reading their daily email (I was not). So it’s their way of being “up front” about it. Their marketing and hiding of information is so terrible. If they were upfront about it, they would say that on the website. Boo!
you still have not understood much at all... what if you stop watching videos too smart for you and go somewhere like Apple Store right now and sign up to give away all your privacy here now.. please do it... they will love you for it! dumb boy, all cheap smartphones do the same as every expensive smartphone, they just make a lot more money ripping you off your life!
Because where would the fun be in in that? And if you're trying to avoid addiction, why would you want something that looks exactly like the addictive/toxic thing you're trying to escape? I love the LP 2 and 3. They feel unique-something I'm actually proud to own and get joy out of using. Also, although you can "make" a smartphone dumb, it's just as easy to reinstall addictive apps, which 99% of people end up doing. With the LP 2/3 that's simply impossible, which feels amazing. (:
It’s so easy to break our own rules and re-download apps or override time-limiting “rules”. I’d personally rather not constantly be reminded of what I’m trying to stay away from. Yeah, they’re expensive, but so is everything else.
@@noseboop4354 How about unlocked? There's a note about this on the checker page. They said you could ask the carrier specifically, even if it's not listed. www.thelightphone.com/compatibility-checker
@@AndrewFolts I haven't tried asking the carriers directly, but canadian carriers are notoriously unsupportive of non-mainstream companies. Some people have managed to use Light Phone II in Canada but service is spotty. And now all carriers are making upgrades as 3G is being phased out and many Light II don't work anymore in Canada.
I want the wise phone but will not concede to their insane subscription model. You charge $400 for a phone that can’t do much, AND I CANT USE IT IF I DONT PAY A SUBCRIPTION?? Insane. Everyone needs to boycott any company who does this.
Yea, this is why I don't much care for Remarkable either. When companies do this it just feels like their top priority is making as much money as possible, rather than helping users.
Since my life is already harder because I’m still holding an iPhone 6 wich can’t even download the vast majority of the apps in the store and can’t read QR (wich have been a big inconvenience to order in a lot of restaurants, specially since the pandemic), can’t even think of buy one of these two. Light phone looks is amazing though.❤ Plus, you probably need a good computer to do what you can’t do with your phone. Too bad I have an iMac from 2009.😅
Yea, using older or more limited tech certainly can limit you in unexpected ways, although I've often found it leads to positive life changes. Like texting less and calling more, getting better with real maps, and being out in nature with no tech. That said, I feel like the LP3 will solve the major hangups for a lot of people. Sending love to your 2009 iMac...hang in there little buddy! (:
@@AndrewFolts thanks for the love!🤣 But let’s be real, if you get a Light Phone you have to have also your wallet with your credit card with you, otherwise how are you going to pay for stuff? Also, a restaurant that only has QR as for menu, how do you order then? How do you check your bank account with these phone? A phone is not only for texting/calling or navigation… My point is that another gadget (computer, tablet) have to come by to save the day, right? I wish I could buy the Light Phone and rely on it for my day to day life, but I think you can’t. We are trapped in this capitalism 😅
@@angrycatalan325 Light is planning on implementing contactless payments, so that shouldn't be an issue longterm. I've never once come across a restaurant that didn't have a menu, so it's never been a problem. I also have no need to check my bank account on my phone. That's something I'd do on the computer. I don't feel trapped by capitalism at all, I've rarely been in a situation where I needed a smartphone, even after three years.
Light phone all the way..no way would I ever buy the wisephone. Love the light phone team and supporting their vision. January is too far away I want my LP3 now!!!
I understand why parents would want to be able to see what’s happening on their child’s phone, but they delete contacts that your child program on their phone. It’s a big no-no for me mainly because there’s some helicopter or some parents who like to abuse their powers we’ll start deleting contacts of child friend just on the basis of you talk to them too much or some other reason and that’s not OK. It’s one thing for the phone to be like your child sending inappropriate things. You probably should have a talk with them then straight up giving you power to do things without them knowing
Yea, that was my thought, as well. Generally if kids are in fact getting into "real" trouble, it's usually because there's some deeper issue that hasn't been addressed at home, and it's better to work on opening voluntary communication lines than aggressively controlling a child's connections to the outside world.
@@AndrewFolts so many parents out there that was straight up just delete random things off your phone without them, knowing if they had permission to do it and I don’t think that’s something parents should be able to overstep if you wanna have a conversation about you’re not supposed to be because I told you so because I believe the things could happen. It’s always gonna be better than just deleting it and then having your child find out later when they cannot get it back and you’re super angry at you open communication will always fix more problems than it causes
They've talked about it, so it may get implemented, but for now there's the Directory tool, which allows you to look up phone numbers and reviews for taxi services (or other businesses/destinations).
I wonder if it's like that Apple Studio Display, which is also matte? I looked at it once in the Apple store and it did indeed feel much better than a regular glossy screen.
This is a great….ad. I knew the minute that you said that your decision came down to “soul” that you were saying either the “light phone” isn’t any better or it might even be worse than the “wise phone” but “don’t worry that’s a feature not a bug.” I honestly might go with the light phone just because I can use it with my own carrier. I haven’t priced this yet, but I’m hopeful that using it for short periods of time (for the purpose of digital fasts) and switching back to my phone won’t be prohibitively expensive. This would be a cool feature if you had just been simply laying out the differences. However, your over-the-top criticism of “wise phone” (with the dark dystopian images) made it clear that this is an ad (not a review) do you have a disclaimer about getting paid by light phone anywhere? Also your weird “helicopter parent” criticism of “wise phone” seems misguided. It was like you were saying (through the whole video) the light phone is for cool 30-somethings that want to jump on the unplugging trend, but “wise phone” is better for parents. That being said, it was a slick video, and probably had the effect you wanted it to have: keeping some of those 30-somethings from trying “wise phone”.
I'm not sponsored by Light Phone and I could easily make more money by becoming a Wisephone affiliate and promoting both phones, so it just comes down to how I feel. People can take or leave that. By "soul" I don't mean branding. With both phones having similar features (although the design is certainly night and day), I ended up taking a deep look into the motivations of each company, and what I found is Light being authentic and original from day one with a small personally invested team trying to set people free and Wise being a generic bandwagon brand run by a creepy corporation that seems more interested in profiting off of wealthy parents who want to micromanage their kids' lives, rather than just raising them right, so that they make good decisions for themselves. The lack of originality, the absence of any About Us Info, the subscription fees, the ties to evil companies like Chick-fil-A, and the mindnumpingly dull promotional video are all red flags that tell you Wise doesn't have any pride in their own product-that their primary concern is squeezing as much money out of consumers for as little effort as possible.
For $300 im in. For $800 (or even for pre order $500 price) it's a no. Price has to be minimalist for a minimalist phone. We're not in 1995, we know there's no magic in the hardware of a black&white touchscreen phone, at the age of iphones 16
The price started off at $399, did you miss it? Whether $500 is worth it just depends on what you want from a phone. If all you want is the ability to call, then a $20 flip phone will do you fine. If you want a uniquely designed phone that feels high end with a good quality camera, mindful UI, and simple distraction-free apps, then the LP3 makes sense. If you really want a scam, look at the Wisephone. They didn't even bother to do something interesting with the body/construction-it's literally just a dumbed down Samsung Galaxy for $399.
Id love to see a video how you use the lightphone 2/3 on a day to day basis, and break down hoe you like the apps. A big make or break for me is music/navigation. I have to have those 2 things otherwise its a no go.
The navigation on the LP2 works fine in text mode, although the visual map view is unusable. The LP3 will presumedly be much better, thanks to them switching to a normal LED screen. For music, I just upload MP3's to the dashboard and they're automatically synced to the LP2. It's not as nice as Spotify, but you can use the tool NoteBurner to download playlists/albums from your account.
Personally I think you are to hard on the wise phone. I totally agree on the montly payment but I actually think having a phone that blends in with everyone elses is nice due to not being asked questions on it all the time. I'm not looking for attention I'm looking for a minimilst phone. It still is a minimalist phone even if its the same size as other phones I dont see that as a huge deal in fact its more of plus. The company image or website matters little to me as well. Most companys have mixed motives and multiple people working for them. The product is what matters and the phone seems to work well as a minimilst phone with little features or distractions. Its more about the product. Helicopter parents aren't great but it's not that crazy either. You can have a product that advertises to two types of people and satisfies both. The only real argument I agree with is the monthly payments that's a huge turn off. But the size and look of the light phone is actually a turn-off for me. I dont want to have to explain to every person I see why my phone looks like a 2002 ipod shuffle.
Yea, the Wisephone seems to be ok from a basic functional perspective with similar features to the LP3. I personally like people to ask questions, because it starts fun conversations, so a unique design is a plus for me. In terms of each company, it's deeper than an image issue. When I see the subscription fees, creepy motivations on which the product was designed, and lack of effort to make something original, that tells me that Wisephone is not a brand I should ever trust with my money, because they're just going to go more in "that" direction longterm, trying to squeeze as much money out me for as little value as possible, while continuing to implement updates/features, etc, that I find ethically problematic.
Yea, me too. The Wisephone can still be hacked back into a regular smartphone, so why not just get a regular smartphone and hack it into a Wisephone with basic app limitations, if it looks the same anyway?
I don't think getting an LED screen over an E-ink one is a necessary sacrifice for getting a camera. Just show me the picture in Black and White and let me send it to Friends and I can look at it later on Desktop
It's not the B&W that's the problem. I've tried using a camera with e ink before and it's a real nightmare. The lag and ghosting make it hard to position your shot, especially for video, and then because the colors/contrast are so inaccurate you don't even know if what you've taken is any good until much later. It honestly made me kind of seasick just taking photos.
@@AndrewFolts lol you're probably right. I'm a niche case since I take all my photo and video with a proper camera and just use my phone one when I'm out and want to show a friend something cool I found, so you just have to recognize it, doees't have to be a good shot
The main differences, technically, are that the Wisephone has a larger glossy LED screen (more room for UI but worse for eyestrain), 4 GB RAM (slower), a removable external memory slot, and that creepy family control dashboard, and extra wide angle back camera. The Light Phone III has a smaller matte OLED screen (less room but better for eyestrain), 6 GB RAM (faster), and the Light dashboard, which only allows each user to manage their own apps, etc (no parental controls). The apps for both are pretty much identical.
So… instead of evaluating the product, or the actual support of the product, both of which aren’t yet even avalible to the public, we went with unconditional support of Lightphone 3 on the basis of liking the people who work for the company? How is this better than someone fanboying Apple? How is this better than cooperate propaganda?
Like I said, my original plan was to compare specs, but after researching both phones, I found the technical differences to be minor and unlikely to be a dealbreaker for anyone. It's not just about "liking" or "disliking." Techless has some serious ethical and creative issues with the Wisephone that would make me uncomfortable with buying it. The fact that's it's just a normal smartphone with some software limitations seems lazy to me and demonstrates an interest in generating quick money, rather than designing a unique and lasting product. Also, the entire philosophy of the company is based around giving parents a disturbing and toxic amount of control over their kids' lives, all with mandatory subscription fees.
@@AndrewFoltsThe way you describe the wisephone makes me want to get it more. All I wanted is exactly what you described it as, a smartphone with limitations. I don’t care if it appears as being “lazy,” I’m just grateful that a limited smartphone exists for me to have the option of buying, as opposed to not one existing at all. I made my decision and am going to buy one.
@@AndrewFoltsI think you did a good job. To some people intentions matter I’m a light phone 2 user and already preorder the 3. This company goes above and beyond for its costumers in my own experience with them.
Well. best would be an actual dumbphone that's cheap. Nokia or something, used flagship for something better. No need to spend smartphone money for a dumbphone.
Just depends on people's use case. For some, a cheap feature phone will work great. For me, as someone who likes high quality design and could use some basic extras, like the GPS and camera for lightweight vlogging, a Nokia wouldn't work, and the LP3 is a better fit.
As stated, the point of the video was not about specs. On paper both the Light Phone 3 and Wisephone 2 have the same basic features and will work fine from a practical perspective. So there was no need to cover this. What did need covering was the underlying motivations of each company. On the one hand, you have Light Phone, who are transparent, funny, creative, unique, and ethical, while on the other you have Techless, who are shady, unoriginal, manipulative, and deceptive-hiding behind stock photography, intentionally burying info about their CEO's history (Chick-fil-A, etc), and encouraging toxic controlling behavior in parents. Even if Wisephone was actually an amazing product (which it's not), I still would never buy from such a morally corrupt brand.
The tech specs are similar enough not to be a dealbreaker for anyone, so I felt it was more useful to talk about the design and philosophy of each company. If you buy from a brand who doesn't care about their customers and is mainly concerned with making max profit thru subscriptions, that's just going to lead to you getting screwed over longterm.

This video solidified my reasoning for pre-ordering the Lightphone 3. Cheers!
Glad it was solidifying, ha! Wishing both of us a speedy rest of the year, so we can get our hands on the LP3. (:
Nice job Andrew! Was looking for comparison between two! Your videos and style are interesting and thoughtful.

Perfect review. Sold me on the Light Phone 3 in about 10 seconds, exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
Ha, damn. Must be a record. I'll have to collab with Light Phone and release a special cardboard edition. (:
Have you seen the upcoming Boring phone? There's not too much information on it at the moment I don't think.
Would be curious to know what kind of tech/tools you use along with your light phone to achieve things like capturing moments, MFA, and music.
Thank you so much for this video!
I think lightphone II is still for me.
Yea, I love that the LP3 feels like an alternative, not a replacement. I'm still going to switch back and forth, I suspect. (:
Boo!
I love your videos! Thanks!

400$ for a phone that can almost nothing?
Why not just buy a cheap smartphone for the same price and make it light/dumb?
you still have not understood much at all... what if you stop watching videos too smart for you and go somewhere like Apple Store right now and sign up to give away all your privacy here now.. please do it... they will love you for it! dumb boy, all cheap smartphones do the same as every expensive smartphone, they just make a lot more money ripping you off your life!

I wish LP 2 was available for Canadians! The 3 is nice but I really like the simplicity of the 2 and that ink display.

The light phone was made with love ❤️
Yea, it's like adopting an adorable grayscale puppy. (:
Do you know is it possible use Whatsapp with lightphone 2 or 3 ????
Not yet, but they've discussed it and it's probably the #1 requested feature, so I'd say there's a decent chance.
Why dont they have service apps like uber
They've talked about it, so it may get implemented, but for now there's the Directory tool, which allows you to look up phone numbers and reviews for taxi services (or other businesses/destinations).
The lightphone 3 has a matte oled screen which is much better than regular led for eye strain/light sensitivity.
I wonder if it's like that Apple Studio Display, which is also matte? I looked at it once in the Apple store and it did indeed feel much better than a regular glossy screen.
This is a great….ad. I knew the minute that you said that your decision came down to “soul” that you were saying either the “light phone” isn’t any better or it might even be worse than the “wise phone” but “don’t worry that’s a feature not a bug.”
I honestly might go with the light phone just because I can use it with my own carrier.
I hate soooo much when companies "greenwash" their philosophy to sell more. It is exactly like you are putting it, soulless :(
"Techless WiseBleach. Kills 99.9% of creativity. Order now!!"
We just need Signal on the light phone 3. Hope they manage to make that happen.
Signal is unlikely, since it's more niche, but they talked about implementing WhatsApp.
@@AndrewFolts Really? I thought I had heard the opposite. That whatsapp was against their vision since it's owned by Meta. Could be wrong.
@@mareekrenard Oh could be. I just saw WhatsApp mentioned in their user survey. Don't remember if Signal was in there.
The Wisephone looks exactly like a smartphone (because it is ... with customization), that's a deal breaker for me.
Yea, me too. The Wisephone can still be hacked back into a regular smartphone, so why not just get a regular smartphone and hack it into a Wisephone with basic app limitations, if it looks the same anyway?
It’s the GPS for me! Not the size, display or anything else.
Yea, I think the GPS will be a lot easier to use on the LP3, especially the map view, with the larger screen and faster performance.
@@AndrewFolts Thanks for replying!
I want a spreadsheet of nitty gritty specs…

Well. best would be an actual dumbphone that's cheap.
Something about the way you move your head and talk just irks me. I find it very hard to watch your videos even though it's a topic I love
Probably the introvert in me, I forget to talk with my hands sometimes and I become a bobblehead, ha.
Your lack of research on wisephone is kinda biased. Watch the guys video with Pints with Aquinas. Your video is just sad
This isn’t a review. Based off that, terrible content. Should I care about the manufacturer, yes. But give it a better title
This vid came op when looking up: form over function.
Interesting! Probably because I was talking about philosophy. In this case the LP has both form and function over the Wisephone.
