One other thing to consider is the risk involved in preordering either of these phones. With the Minimal Phone, it's the founders' first ever phone, and so far we've only seen 3D renders and a list of specifications. With Light Phone III, there's videos of prototype devices in action, solid software from the Light Phone II, and a near 10-year track record of the founders continually improving the device and shipping phones. I feel much more confident the Light Phone III will match what the marketing claims.
I think it's a do or die situation for the Minimal Phone. They really need to get the protoype ou and start showing the device off. The Light Phone does have the experience and trust of the consumer market which is hard to compete with.
I held off but once I sat down and compared the specs and really studied the device, I decided the Light Phone III is the device for me. I was going to get the Light Phone 2 but then when they announced the new Light Phone I had to make a choice.
@@_AbuIlyas doing a quick google search came that the minimal is aiming to ship by end of September 2024. Just over a month and a half to wait for it while the light phone is early next year. I hope the minimal phone campaign will deliver but the light phone has more track record at this point as others have said it already. My main gripe with light phone 2 was the microusb as i got interested late. I'm happy that the owners decided to make a Light phone 3 version improved in many ways even though a eink minimal phone sounds really nice. But I would hate to try texting on it, which would make me reach for a secondary device way more often than I would want, so it defeats its purpose for me. That being said, I preordered the light phone 3 to give it a go @ digital detoxing and maybe even making it a daily driver, why not. Well done @LauraMalvoyante for preordering one. Just preordered a Light Phone 3 yesterday. I have used the Light Phone 2 for a few years and loved it. The only bad thing about the LP2, in my opinion, is the refresh rate and lack of responsiveness of the keys sometimes. I’m very excited to give the LP3 a try!
@@joshheard1981 the refresh rate is probably the main reason for ditching the e-ink. I like e-ink devices but typing on them is a nightmare. Welcome to the LP3 preorder club!

Putting my faith in the minimal phone. They have a working engineering prototype now. Definitely expect delays in production, but better to work out most the glitches first. For me, I want to minimize, but I still need access to more apps for banking, paying bills and fitness apps. The lite phone seems awesome, but too limiting for me. And honestly, the retro keyboard sold me. I want to go back to the 90s/2000s 😂
@@richardbenz8861 I get this. I love the keyboard and app access for the Minimal Phone too. Both are good phones for different needs. I would love to have both but I took the risk on Light Phone for this round.
I have a Light phone 2... It worked so well to help me kick my phone habit that I had forgotten I even owned it until I stumbled upon this video via your MP3 video. I should dig it out of my abandoned tech drawer and see if I can still boot it up. My teen told me I should do a review video... LOL. In short, lets just say I hope they've worked out some of the kinks for the 3rd try;) I have been very tempted to get a cell phone again recently so thanks for reminding me about this! Maybe I won't have to cave into temptation;)
Yes you should do a review! I was going to get the Light Phone 2 but then the Light Phone 3 was announced so I decided to try it. I heard the Light Phone 2 had some issues and I'm sure the 3 will have kinks to work out as well. Thank you for watching my videos!
I beg to disagree. Given hardware, Light Phone is better on paper. But I hate the limitations it imposes. I need to have some apps (transit, banking, ID) and want to have others (Spotify). 5g would be nice on Minimal, but I would trade it for Google Play.
Nothing wrong with you wanting a eink smartphone as these are for 2 diff markets ones a minimal phone and ones a Eink Smartphone!!!! For people who want. Smartphone just with an eink screen me personally i use a light phone 2 and preordered a light phone 3
I ended up prepurchasing the Minimal phone for the full app selection (I use active alert for work), e-ink screen (ending my youtube short doom scroll, and reading on the Kindle app), keyboard (I do wish that it slid under the screen like the Palm Pre), and the headphone jack. Hopefully both phones are excellent, and thank you for your content!
The keyboard is exactly what I been asking for, for years since minimalist phones came out, plus the ability to download mkre apps like utility light control, banking and uber, food delivery which minimal phone has all of it, so I'm rooting for that, they keep delaying it I hope it comes out n we can see some hands on stuff. I even bought a blackberry classic, and now switching to blackberry key2 for access to some useful apps, but the screen is still small enough where I wont get distracted by scrolling on distracting apps.
I just preorder the device as well. If you are going to gamble do it with more established company. I hope it helps me reduce my addiction social media.
Minimal phone will be my choice over the light phone. Android app access is something most people have to have for their phone to be a standalone device. For instance, I have to a have Signal messaging and Tidal music. Without those 2 apps I cannot use the phone. Most people have this issue and it will always keep the light phone from selling to a larger market.
@@LauraMalvoyante I agree with you however, ask yourself this question. Do you think LightPhone would rather sell fewer units, or more units? I am a huge supporter of LightPhone and have been a user of LP2 since launch. unfortunately, I will need a second device at all times if I were to use LP3 as my main phone. I have thought about this quite a lot since it is my only real gripe with light OS. Anyways, I really enjoyed your take on these 2 minimalist phones. I'm going to be buying Boox Palma 2 in conjunction with buying either the Light Phone 2 or 3. I'm waffling a bit, as I would like to have a functional camera, but don't want to buy a digital camera. It would be nice to have something that works overseas on those rare occasions when I travel to Europe, and the Light Phone 2 doesn't have the capability. The thing holding me back is the cost on the Light Phone 3. Oh, and the non e-ink screen. I dunno. Feel like I'm going around and around in circles.
I feel you about the waffling. I am conflicted between the Light Phone 3 and the Mudita Kompakt. Price is the main issue but e-ink is a close second. I need e-ink more and more with my poor vision. The Boox Palma is a great device and I'm sure the Boox Palma 2 will be even better.
Light3 is a better minimal device all around. Better camera, better screen, better processor, better durability, removal battery and better support. At $399, it’s a steal when compared to minimal.
I want the Light Phone 3, as I LOVE the hardware. The only deal breaker for me is the price. It’s $500, and I don’t have a smart phone addiction so it’s not a necessity 😅
@@BLERDay_1994 I'm not sure since they haven't demonstrated it. But I am assuming the photos will apear black and white on the device but when you send them to another device they will be in color. This is the case with most e-in devices like the Boox Palma.
Can an e-ink display have a black-background with white text? I've never had an e-ink device, is that something I should be worried about if I prefer white text over black background?
