Mexican 13 Vegan here 🙋🏻‍♀️. Here’s a conversation we need to talk about, cause i keep hearing this from lots of people.
    Specially tourist.
I come from a farming community (el rancho) in our culture specially in ours meat was something you mostly eat during special occasions. Mostly we where more a vegetarian background, yes I will not denied that meat is more accessible right now as is cheaper, but back in the day and I’m talking about maybe 20 years ago at lease in my Rancho we only kill and eat animals during big holidays or events. Bodas, quinceañeras, or when someone died.
If you look into our culture cuisine is very Vegetarian oriented. Campesinos (farmers) could have a good year or a bad year so we had to adopt to difficult times and experiment with what we have.
So when you said, it’s hard to be vegetarian in our community because “we eat a lot of meat” that’s not true.
    Mexico is súper vegetarian friendly.
To experience our culture you don’t have to be a meat eater, you can totally have some amazing vegetarian dishes that are amazing and major part of our culture.
But Ofcourse If you go to Mexico and think we only eat tacos 🌮 with meat then you’re not totally experiencing our cuisine.

Gringo here who's experienced CDMX both as a total non-vegan and then later as a vegan. As a vegan, the trip was amazing and I scarfed some of the best food I've had anywhere. As a non-vegan, I spent an inordinate amount of my trip wincing in pain on the toilet. I don't feel like having your GI tract rocked is a quintessential part of visiting CDMX. Just my opinion of course.

The intimacy part is interesting - as someone in a long distance relationship with someone in a whole different country I totally understand having to be friends/best friends first and lovers second. You have to be able to socialize far apart!

Wow! I mean, the whole video is fascinating, but I really stuck on how Levi and Leah view present and future -- it hit a chord with me. I am also 100% future thinker and I guess, as a person who does work the normal 40 hour week and has not been able to take an extended break....ever.....I kind of wonder how that will hit. I am thinking this is a great way to see how you two will retire in a way that most people do not get to experience until they are in their 60's and 70's. (to give context, I'm in my mid-40's and have been working full time for over 20 years)

About food, I’d also say that Mexico is great to be vegan, but if you cook. Not only there are more options in supermarkets, but fresh produce is mostly ALWAYS available somewhere. However, don’t expect all restaurants to have even vegetarian options, we do like our meat 😅

Your comment on being away from family on Christmas is so true. I am the opposite as most of my family is in Mexico and I am in the states. My childhood Christmas memories from Mexico are the best for sure, the atmosphere of my country is like anything I have ever or will ever experience here, however most of that comes from being surrounded by my family and their love. Sucks you had a rainy Christmas 😢, in Mexico. Hopefully your new years is better, weather wise.

I’ve been vegan for over 35 years and I have travelled all over the United States and the world. When I am out of the US I stay in Airbnb’s with a kitchen and shop at local grocery stores. Easy peasy… When I travel around the United States I am usually car camping but I still shop out of grocery stores just like I do at home. I have portable cooking equipment to prepare food when necessary. It’s very easy to find food on the road. A larger problem is to find decent bathroom facilities for waste and washing. The big plus side for small car camping is that is much less expensive and you can go places where you would not be able to go in a llarger vehicle.

    • @LeahandLevi

As a Colombian vegan who started 10 years ago and camps a lot: you can 100% be vegan on the road and still experience the “flavor” of the country. It is not going ti be fashionable and exciting and interesting all the time. Most of the time Im living off of rice and beans. The HUGE plus side to this is that in Colombia (never been to Mex but I assume it is the same) fruits and vegetables are cheap and widely available, so you can have like three bananas for breakfast and some oats and call it a day. Plus, you get to experience those kinds of flavors you would never get living in the US or Canada or other places.
I have to say I dont agree with compromising and eating cheese or eggs or meat is a must while traveling. Yes, food is an integral part of cultures but your values and morals are an integral part of yourself, and personally Im not willing to compromise on that for any reason.

I know this is about doing things on the cheap, and this isn't in every county, but for the US I'd be so tempted to get something like the Regus coworking space pass, which is fairly cheap, and then you can use their office spaces basically in any city. Way less busy / eyes on you then say a coffee shop (so feels a bit more personal space, especially the pods they have). And great place to do your teleworking from. Combine that with a cheap gym pass like Planet Fitness and for like $100/month you have unlimited access to place to work, workout, shower, hang out, just sit at a table and have a coffee in peace, etc.

With regard to eating vegan in Mexico, it's really easy in Mexico City, and you can get a lot of the local flavor and culture through vegan food in Mexico City. I don't know about anywhere else in Mexico though. It's also really easy in Buenos Aires, Argentina despite a beef-heavy food culture.

i don't know what kind of availability there is in North America (i suspect california would be the best bet), but there are futon made with modern materials. cotton batting is nice, but needs to be fluffed and shaken out regularly, otherwise gets hard and dense. my futon is triple layer foam in three foldable panels by a japanese brand nitori. i can imagine you all upgrading to a mobile tiny house in the future, so worth it to keep in mind that you can have a good sleep without the bulk of a mattress.

But it's not like you need to be in the car all the time no? I'd so find the closest coffee shop, go to opposite corners, and just space out "alone" for a bit of sanity. Between coffee shops, museums, libraries, cheap gyms (Planet Fitness type of chains), Uni campuses, etc, there are lots of free/cheap places to hang out so you're not stuck in/around the car all day.

I’ve been on a marathon of your vids lately and usually I leave fun comments, but this comment is less fun... I don’t like the part where you said “if you’re traveling to another place you should eat the food that that culture makes".
I don't think that just because something is cultural than it is right. For example, not allowing women to vote which cultural. Owning humans as property, cultural.
And then it was mentioned that one would be missing the flavor of the country even they didn’t eat meat, cheese or eggs every now and then.
There’s a saying that vegetarians and vegans use that I really like; “a life is worth more than 15 minutes of pleasure". I really like that.
And I really like you guys too, so I'm going to continue to binge your videos because both you guys are awesome, and so kind, and fun, and...

      @jenniferlikover6910 Год назад +4

I’m sad to hear influencers encouraging people to support an exploitative industry. Not a misinterpretation I don’t think, your exact words were “you’d literally be missing the flavour of the country if you didn’t now and then eat meat and cheese and eggs”
The vegan/plant based food I have eaten while traveling has been incredible, not just in Mexico but worldwide. Not to mention the passionate local people creating the dishes and running their local plant based businesses. The last feeling I have ever had is that I’m missing out.
Most importantly I think it’s important to promote conscious efforts to travel in a low impact way. The way animals are treated in the food industry is beyond horrific, but (if it’s even possible) there are even fewer laws and standards in Mexico than the US. To tell people it’s ok to just temporarily ignore that and support the animal exploitation because of the “flavours” you’d be missing out on is not something I’d ever have expected from you guys.
I saw that you went to the vegan taco truck and I was really glad to see that. When I went to that truck it was midnight and the street was full, it took us over an hour to get our tacos. Still such a fun, buzzing atmosphere and we could feel the spirit of the city. No animals harmed. There are so many vegan gems out there to discover.

Being vegan it's not easy to just put an animal product into your body. No matter the culture. But that being said I appreciate your views cause everyone's different. Stay safe and can't wait for next week's video.

I love the videos and commentary, always educational and inspirational. Can you reduce the amount of “filler” words you use, Leah. Too many “like” and “literally” are reducing your commentary flow.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Shitty take on the vegan question. Animals are not "flavour". They are living beings. Telling vegans that they would be "missing out" by not partaking in something they find moral reprehensible would be akin to someone telling you that you'll be "missing out" by not partaking in racist traditions when you visit the southern USA.

Stop bashing the south and guess what everyone is just a little bit racist. It is human nature to want to be with people more similar to yourself.
