  • In this episode we set sail for Southern Sumatra and on our way to Bengkulu, Brodes lands a Mackerel whilst our friends on Allusive hook up a Wahoo! Sam gets more than he bargains for when the Wahoo puts up a fight, embedding the lure through his forearm. Brendan comes to the rescue by jumping ship and performing minor surgery to remove the lure safely from Sam’s arm, while Sarah and Jules helm the boats. Never a dull moment!

    Nice work Brendon. Rob went through a spate of hooking himself on lures; who knew catching fish could be so dangerous?

    Interesting encounter with the local 'protection officers'. Laws/jurisdictions not being so clear-cut in Asia, it seems you have to play the game well in order to keep both "faces" and wallets intact. Good work with the surgery, too. Was tough just to watch, I'm glad you had painkiller.

      We had many boardings by locals wanting to see our documents and it can get a little tiresome. It’s no different elsewhere but it is good to know the rules and try to follow them as best you can. It was tricky in Indonesia because each place seems to have a different process or young officers who don’t know the rules (making them up as they go) Government officials always tend to be the worst at asking for bribes or charging fees that don’t exist. If in doubt get the camera out 😜 Or at least ask for proof of charges and a receipt

    So did you end up going up the west coast of Sumatra? We have pondered doing that as we mull over the possibilities from Langkawi.

      We did mate. If you surf, it has some of the best reef breaks in the world. We know a lot of boats who go through there for the season and then jump back to Thailand. The have the best rendang there too! Our Sumatra episodes are coming up but reach out if you have any questions 🤙🏼

    Great work! Please could you explain how you removed the hook. Was the barb right through the arm and skin? It looks like you had to cut the skin a bit before cutting the barb off?

    • @sailingexcelsior
      @sailingexcelsior  Месяц назад

      Yeah, the barb was stuck in pretty deep underneath a tendon and we had to make a small incision to push the barb through safely before cutting it off with pliers. Then we could then remove it. Keeping it out of the saltwater, it healed up fine. 👍

      @davidholt5702 superglue is a great thing to have in your first aid kit. You can get lignocaine and suture kits in South East Asia but just make sure you know how to use them if and should the time arise.
