    Great video, Irem really were on their winning streak in the second half of the 80s. Though that's not to say that they made nothing worth playing later, I'm actually really fond of their later games for the PS1 and PS2. You can't go wrong with games like Steambot Chronicles.

    I still love the SNES port despite all the slowdown. I love the soundtrack. The music to the first stage extends long past what you'll actually hear if you get to the boss. It has a nice little piano section that you'll only hear in the sound test. All those early SNES titles had such great music. Castlevania IV, Contra III, Super R-Type, Gradius III, etc.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 лет назад +1

      Irem sure did put a lot of effort in to the music of Super R-Type. It features some of the best music on the system and its such an early game too. I think in many places the graphics look better than the Arcade too. It's just a shame Irem we're pretty bad at programming on the SFC / SNES. All of their games suffer from crippling slowdown.

    • @RyuHayabusa06
      @RyuHayabusa06 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I remember other games like Gunforce being plagued with slowdown. Graphically it may be better in some spots than the arcade but there are some things missing like the water in stage 3. Stage 3 boss is completely different too but probably because it looked like male genitalia and they thought Nintendo might frown upon it, lol.

    • @vludi7857
      @vludi7857 7 лет назад

      Gunforce wasn't ported by Irem, and I'd say R-Type 3 was pretty well programmed.

      The original SFC design was supposed to have a few DSP's on the main board that saw the chop before launch to reduce costs, these were designed to improve performance as its CPU 6502 variant was very slow for the period. The DSP's did find their way into the system but only on the cartridges which was there from day one, Pilot Wings and F-Zero both used DSP's to improve performance with the Mode 7 fast scroll effect. The more likely outcome with Irem is that they did not want the additional costs of the DSP's on the cartridge thus hence the slow down experienced. The SFC could do great shooters that could handle a lot of characters as long as the cart was carrying the additional hardware, Super Aleste is a great example.
      Still a great R-Type game though.

    • @RyuHayabusa06
      @RyuHayabusa06 7 лет назад

      regfenster The SFC has a 65816 cpu because it was originally supposed to be backwards compatible with the 8-bit Famicom. Nintendo should have gone with a 68000 to begin with.

    Great video as usual! One interesting thing to note about the PS3 version of R-Type Dimensions (released quietly years later) is that there is some killer, really awesome arranged music of all stage themes -- and some new sound effects also -- not found on the original 360 Dimensions which has the exact arcade soundtrack and sfx on the 3D mode. On the other hand, PS3 port has some strange slowdown that the 360 version doesn't 'feature' in any way. :)

    On the Amiga, I would use customized Genesis or Master System game-pads. I would always wire one button to "DPad Up" to take care of the jumping issue, and then button C (or equivalent) could be used as a second button when supported. Then I also would map an extra button (by map I mean wire) to the Space character input (on the pin that did it from port one on the C64) which also carried over to the Amiga. So I could hit all inputs in a game like this, or say Turrican without touching the keyboard. A lot of work to set up, but never had the input issues that most people complained about. :D
    On the ST version, if it wasn't specifically for the STe version (which had a blitter chip) then it had to do effects using the CPU, so wouldn't be able to do a lot of what the Amiga version would be up to. Hence the starfield.

    • @RetroCore

      Modding a controller would indeed be the best way to play Amiga games. I could do something similar for these comparison videos but since they are comparison videos I need to suffer and play the games how they were intended. 😭

    ah the spam lasers across the screen attack, a cousin of the homing weapon. funnily enough, if a shooter has different coloured weapon shots, the homing weapon tends to be blue and the bullet spam tends to be more red or orange

  • @iwanttocomplain

    That's not Irem's programming skills causing the slowdown on the SNES game, it's the hardware struggling to cope with what is being asked of it. This is one of the better running SNES shmups. Only STG Strike Gunner doesn't slow down on the SNES and it achieves that by having next to no backgrounds at all.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  5 лет назад +2

      Actually, it is Irems poor programming. Every game they developed for the SNES slows down badly even when nothing much is going on. Dinosaurs is a very good example of this.
      Its true that the SNES was painfully slow but just take a look at Compile's Super Aleste. The screen is always full of stuff (More than any other SNES shooter) yet it never slows down. Now that is some impressive programming.

    • @iwanttocomplain
      @iwanttocomplain 5 лет назад

      @@RetroCore Well I was watching Parodius which uses an SA1 co-processor and that game still slows down quite alot. The SNES could not handle all that many sprites. Power Strike 2 on sms runs better than most SNES shmups.

  • @hardwiredxs
    @hardwiredxs 7 лет назад +3

    Quite frankly the only comments on the amiga version i agree is the button being the space bar and the ocasional slowdown (which in an a1200 does not happen and if you play on ntsc mode 60hz the speed is almost arcade one). Other than that it's pretty good damn port and one of the best versions.
    On the St front maybe arc could do more but quite frankly with the machine's limitations It would'nt be very impressive anyway...

    • @hardwiredxs
      @hardwiredxs 7 лет назад

      Actually I played on my a500 1mb in ntsc mode and enjoyed it greatly. It was like having an arcade, so if a megadrive version would bebased on the amiga ntsc mode it would be pretty good. Not discuting...
      Specially since the spacebar would not be an issue.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 лет назад +2

      The Amiga port needed a hack to play on the 1200 from what I remember. I was also playing at 60fps in this video but still had the slowdown.
      To be honest the slowdown and wobbly parallax scrolling, chunky looking sprites and low number of colours (32 VS a Mega Drive's 64) would have had it looking rather ugly on the Mega Drive. But I do think for an arcade conversion to the humble Amiga 500, it is a great port.

    • @OperationPhantom
      @OperationPhantom 7 лет назад +1

      It is one of the best Arcade conversions for the Amiga and a worthy "companion" to Apidiya. Arguably the greatest horizontal shooter original for the machine.

    • @CFalcon030
      @CFalcon030 7 лет назад

      I agree with that, but for the ST version. I've always played this game on my Falcon, which with its 16MHz cpu didn't let me experience many slowdowns (apart from one) and since I played on VGA it was always 60Hz. I think the game vsyncs every second frame, so it was a very comfortable 30fps. The problem I imagine is that with backgrounds the ST version would have been even slower, since it would add masking on top of everything else the cpu would have needed to do. Still, the game engine is much better than R-type.

  • @ABlackFalcon
    @ABlackFalcon 7 лет назад

    The first version of R-Type II I had was the GBC version you don't cover, in R-Type DX. It's based on the GB version but in color, so it is different, but a bit less so than the colorized version of R-Type I on the same cart is; that game saw some significant graphical enhancements on the colorized mode, while the second already looked better so the improvement is less. The color is still nice, though. (The colorized and DX modes also have saving, to continue from any level you have reached, which is pretty nice...)

The first R-Type had homing missiles (you get them in the 1st stage even), but R-Type II introduced the bomb as an alternative weapon. Maybe you got the 2 mixed up? Or maybe you meant to describe the 2nd stage diffuse wave cannon? Those aren't missiles, and they do not home.

    I wonder if the reason the PSX version is sped up is because the arcade version ran at 55hz? Maybe they just lazily ported/emulated the arcade version and sped it up to 60hz for NTSC compatibility.

    • @RetroCore

    Not the biggest R-Type fan - it's an absolute classic, yet a bit too archaic and strict in its mechanics, to my current tastes - but I recall being very curious about the Amiga version or R-Type II, back then. My magazine of choice praised it as one of the best and most accurate arcade ports on the system, and the pics really looked totally similar to the arcade original... So when I finally had the chance to try it I was like 'err, am I missing anything, here?' Sure, it was enjoyable and very decent as a conversion, but on the whole I remember Z-Out much more fondly.

    The main reason the R-Types and possibly the 360 version (latter with horrible audio emulation for the Helix Laser, the red powerup) is due to the original running at a resolution of 384x256 with a refresh rate of 55Hz. Also explains the Amiga version running slower.

    The PS3 version of Dimensions has some upgrades over the 360 version such as a fun simultaneous 2 player co-op mode, an arranged soundtrack which is excellent, and the ability to remap the buttons.
    There is also an "unlimited mode" where you can continue right where you die and have unlimited ships. Fun if you just want to blast through the game I suppose? :)

    • @RetroCore

      @videogameobsession 7 лет назад

      Oh, right the 360 does have co-op, but Tozai did add a few new features to the PS3 version though.
      According to their website:
      The PlayStation 3 version also has enhanced audio in 3D mode, Infinite Mode where you have unlimited credits, and online & offline multiplayer. Other features like slow motion, key config, online rankings, and game stats are in the game too. R-Type Dimensions will cost 1,000 yen ($11) on the PlayStation Store.
      I remembered some people being happy about the key config because they didn't care for the default button config.

    The Amiga version used sprite handing, which was used for the parrallax scrolling. if you remove those sprite, then the the Amiga version would look pretty much extractly same as the Atari St Game. But Smart use of the sprites.....

    It's probably not surprising the Amiga version has better background graphics as the Amiga has superior sprite handling custom chips. Probably the main things the ST does better is polygon based games that generally run a bit faster due to 8mhz cpu vs 7.1mhz in Amiga. The other thing is Midi of course.

    • @104d_3rr0r_vince

      ST has no hardware dual playfield so if they try to do the parallax effect then the framerate would be even slower.
      Also if it was moving along with the same speed, probably be the same as the background must be redrawn in software behind sprites position. But you'll never know how clever a coder could be. Check i.e pinball dreams on the cpc. If this happened back then most likely they would burned as pagans :-D

    Arc developments did the best they could with the limited ST hardware, this really needed to be on something like the STE.
    They lost the parallax scrolling, kept the scrolling smooth, but slow.
    If they'd gone for faster scrolling i fear it would of been jerky and running in a smaller playing area.
    There's only so much you can do with clever coding routines and a 68000 CPU.

Not the best I have seen on either machine by far, but good for Activision arcade ports. Note, the ST version does look like a pre-release un-optimized demo. ...still for Activision its ok =)

      Activision only PUBLISHED the game, ARC developments handled the conversion and they were a talented development team.
      Crackdown
      Dragon Breed
      Forgotten Worlds
      On the ST
      You really needed the STE hardware if you wanted to keep the speed, parallax scrolling etc.
      You could of given this to Factor 5,Thalion etc and they'd still be faced with nothing more than a 68000 CPU and clever coding, none of the Amiga custom hardware here.
      To Arc's credit, game has less slowdown than SNES R-Type.

  • @rafaellima83

    R-Type 2 on Amiga DOES SUPPORT 2 BUTTON JOYSTICKS! I played it a lot with a Master System joystick I bought the same day I got my A600. You an use the 2nd button to fire the pod away and bring it back.
    Now I don't know if I have a problem with my speakers, but do I hear no explosion sounds on the Amiga version? Because they are there... I've heard there's a earlier/beta release that's lacking on SFX. I am pretty sure the game I play from time to time on my Amiga does have more SFX than I am hearing here (But I have just the left side of my speakers working, maybe that's the problem)
    Besides the ST version, that was the only true port the game got back at its time, since I refuse to consider Super R-Type an R-Type 2 port since its so different from the arcade game (I call it an "inspired" on R-Type 2 game :D ). And IMO, it's a freaking awesome game, even with all its slowdown.
    The Atari ST version lacks the Amiga background because on Amiga it was done using hardware sprites, and the ST has no Hardware sprites whatsover.

    • @rafaellima83

      The sound effects are present on this video for the Amiga version however they're not very loud and as to be expcted only come out of one channel.
      I do agree for an Amiga Arcade port, R-Type 2 is pretty well done. It certainly blows away many of the others poor efforts seen on the system.
      Are you sure about the two button option? I couldn't get it to work at all. Normally if a game is two button compatable such as Snow Brothers it automatically detects the two buttons but with R-Type 2 nothing happened. All buttons just fired. Would the type of Amiga being used be an issue?

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 7 лет назад

      100% sure. Are you using a real amiga or Winuae? Some games do not detect the 2nd button when using a Mega-Drive pad... no one ever gave me a proper explanation to this, it seems the game has to check the 2nd button in a certain way to work with the Mega-Drive pad.
      And I am 100% sure that R-Type 2 only works with a Master System alike pad, not the Mega-Drive one. If you want it, I can even make a video of it working with my SMS pad on my A600 :)
      Now if you're using Winuae instead of a real Amiga, it should have worked...

      @@RetroCore Problem was for the Amiga wasn't so much the hardware because in the right hands it could do a lot, the real problem was piracy and Japanese developers not really caring about a western computer, hence why the Amiga got a lot of bad ports, more so of Japanese games, maybe Japanese developers and publishers wanted thier games to shine better on Japenese hardware, who knows but a lot of us know that many of thoes games, the developers that ware porting to a western machine, didn't have any of the source code, sounds, music or any of that to help them.
      We see this a lot when we see games for the Amiga from western companies, mostly European ones or games that ware designed for the Amiga, they tend to shine a lot better on the hardware.
