I developed love to explore different type of shoes that are comfortable rather than beautiful which brought me to these cushioned running shoes and Kofuzi became my No.1 channel for reviewing shoes in a matter of a week. Great channel!
I had about 20 miles in this shoe when I decided to take them to Florida on my last trip. I ran the recent runDisney Weekend events in this pair and found myself answering a lot of questions for fellow runners. I really enjoyed them as I ran at paces ranging from 6:10 to 11-minute mile - depending on if I was running with friends/family for conversations; or running up to get a spot in line for a Disney Characters... My race day shoes have been Endorphin Pro 3 since they came out and I found the same great feel in this ON shoe - likeminded with your review and made me smile. When looking for a new slow and long distant runner, it came down to this shoe and the New Balance shoe (also in your video), and I am glad with my choice - also happy with the knowledge from my local shoe store… I did not expect to run that fast over the weekend (as it is not really for time) but did enjoy the shoes comfort when I did and that surprised me.
Many thanks for this review, really helpful as always. I see a lot of people wearing ON shoes as street shoes only but this is the first design I could be tempted by for running.
One thing I find annoying with most people who hate on all On shoes is the fact that all they seem to care about is bounce and cushion in a shoe. The Cloudflow, Cloudflash and Cloudrush are firm but snappy, and transition smoothly from mid to toe very well which is a trait that is quite consistent across all their shoes and what may be the 'precision' of On shoes that you're describing.
The precision I was referring to was the fit of the upper. Typically nicely dialed in When it comes to their faster firmer shoes, the response timing of the clouds seems to disagree with my footstrike. Like when the timing on a diving board is just a bit off. The foam wants to decompress when my foot is not yet ready for it
I agree when people hate on a shoe without knowing the brand or the tech. But if On has done a poor job messaging on how their shoes are intended to feel/be used, that's not a user problem. That's an On problem. When the market tells you they don't like or understand the point of something, you have to address that or it overbears your brand message.
I am really liking this shoe a lot.....because it does not feel like the traditional On shoe. My daily training rotation has been the Novablast 3 (almost time to retire) and the Rebel V3. This Cloudsurfer iteration has broken into that inner circle. I 100% agree with your pricing commentary. The On brand markup/tax makes me cringe.
Yeah that hard spring board was the worse. Glad that On is finally making some shoes that you can actually run in. This on the heels of the CloudMonster is great!
Have tried various On shoes in the past and I like a few for casual wear but did not like any of their running shoes - both for the road and trail. They were firm and stiff, didn't fit my feet well, and just didn't provide a good ride. But, after seeing all the positive reviews from people I've come to trust, I decided to give it a try. Well, I received the new Cloudsurfer today and took it out an 8-mile run and I'm impressed. It's a unique shoe. It's somewhere in between the daily trainer and easy/recovery categories although I'm inclined to put it in the latter. But, for an easy/recovery max-cushioned variety, it's very light (mine is around 7.8 ounces or 221 grams in my size 8 US), nimble, and can keep up with faster paces. This being said, this is no speed/tempo shoe. It's really best for easy slower paces and felt great in between 8' and 9' per mile paces. It felt okay at around 7'/mile when I picked up the pace a bit but just doesn't have the energy return or the snap for going fast. It's a little too soft for that and makes you overcompensate. I slowed down and decided to keep the pace at around 8'~8'30"/mile and just enjoy the ride. It's a unique ride. To me, it's an easy/recovery/slow shoe that feels like a light daily trainer, which is very interesting. It's around 2 full ounces lighter than the Invincible Run (2 & 3), More V4, SC Trainer, and Gel-Nimbus 25 in my size, so it makes me want to go faster but feels best when I run at the pace that's best for these heavier max-cushioned shoes. The ride reminds me of those shoes but without the midsole bulk/height and the weight. I smirked at times as I ran, thinking "Well, this is rather different and in a good way." It's not as protective as the aforementioned bulkier and heavier shoes and I feel some soreness in my left knee right now which I think happened when I picked up the pace. My assessment after the first run is that I should not try to run fast in this shoe like I would with, say, the Prime X Strung or the Vaporfly 3 - two shoes I've been running in a lot lately. The ride reminds me of the Mach 5 but is softer. It's pretty soft and stability could be an issue for some people. Trying to fun fast could exacerbate the stability issue. I think I need to remember to run easy and slow when I put this On my feet (pun intended!). It's a very comfortable shoe (the upper reminds me of the Gel-Nimbus 25) and light, but it wants you to take it easy like you would with heavier max-cushioned shoes. Overall, it's a winner - the best On shoe I've tried.
Did a event with my club and got a free pair. It was weird at first because I felt the rear of the shoe was rolling, but after breaking them in they’re so comfortable and I really enjoy this shoe since it felt more natural in my opinion. My friends preferred more cushioning. While I think it was fine since Im used to shoes with a smaller midsole. Really amazed how On is listening and counting to innovate in their products. Your video as always is so informative and I can’t wait to drop more miles in them.

My favorite daily runner and high mileage by quite a bit(coming from Cliftons). Super comfortable! And Maybe the best walking shoe ever.. I spent 12-13 hours walking las vegas Thursday.... including from the airport to my hotel/caesars, I was at about 14 miles when my Apple watch died... and that was a couple hours before I went back to the hotel. Normally when I walk that much I'll feel it. Even after 12 hours my feet felt great and felt great puting back on the next day. I just wish they sold these in Navy Blue so I could wear them with my scrubs at work.

good review. I agree that is a very comfortable shoe.....but it's become more of a "walk around" shoe for me. It doesn't have the structure I want for longer days but they are certainly moving in the right direction. Nike seems to be moving in the opposite direction.

Great video Kofuzi and the Cloud Surfer is a great shoe, love it for my daily runs. They should use this new mid-sole in the Cloud Neo as that is a great idea hamstrung by a rubbish midsole.
On Shoe Co. rep came to our running store (Bryn Mawr Running Co.) 8 am this morning to demo this shoe before our morning club run. We took them out for a ride, most of us ran an 8 mile loop on a very muggy day (no one is acclimated yet). My personal comments are that the Cloudsurfer is like running on pillows. It is a plush ride. I recently had an ankle issue (pain. swelling) not related to specific trauma that is aggravated by pronation in walking/running and I just gingerly started up running (with some pain) again this week. Late last night I ran two easy miles in Saucony Speed 2s and my ankle blew up. I iced and took massive quantities of Vitamin I (Ibuprofen lol) fearing I would not be able to run this morning. I also feared having pain after a mile or two and having to turn back. Surprisingly, this was my first absolutely pain free run in weeks, and 10 hours later I still have no pain (and didn't even think to ice). This tells me it is a stable (not pronating) ride. I am a midfoot striker, heels on downhills maybe. I did experience hip fatigue after a few miles, which I am not sure was due to the horrid dew point/humidity and hills (566 ft elevation) where every muscle in your body hurt and my heart rate lived in Z4 a lot (hills plus my fitness drop after I missed 3 weeks of training ), or was it the softness of the shoe (and no plate or energy rods, etc.) giving my hips an added burden. Some of us concluded that it was a bit too soft for a true daily trainer or long run (over 10 miles) shoe but more suited for an easy recovery day, 5 miles at slower paces. I know one runner loved the Clousdsurfer so much after the demo run that she bought a pair for daily use, and she runs 40+ miles/week in those same hills. Many of the employees of the shoe company said they were liking/wearing them for work, specifically the standing/walking stresses of their job. One is training for a marathon in 3 weeks. Opinions vary, but the arrow seems to be pointing up.
I need to call out that while comfortable, innovative, and stylish. This shoe is by far the squeakiest shoe on the planet! With almost clown car-level ridiculousness, especially when it's humid out, with every single step. Squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak at 170 stm! Am I alone on this? On please Swiss engineer the squeak out of these shoes for the next iteration!
I recently bought my first pair of On's after using my beloved Hokas for year. Tried the cloud monster first. They were pretty good. However, after trying the surfer's, I was hooked.
I'm looking into these in the future, because they're really comfy when I tried them, but given that many people have complained of their squeakiness, I'll wait until On works on that issue.
i got a pair of these at REI since my yearly dividend rewards covered half the cost. But, it's hard to pay $160 for a 'daily trainer' like this one when Asics has the Magic Speed 3, Puma has crazy sales (got the Deviate Nitro 2 for $120) and same with Adidas - purchased the Adios Pro 3 for $138 on sale. But i'll try them out (6'4, 221 lbs)
Thanks for the vid. Been watching more of your videos now that I'm training for a 5k & 10k. Noticed that you pair shoes. Do you suggest having a pair of shoes to train in and a pair to run in for race day? Not sure what you mean when you pair shoes. Thanks.
I wonder how the foam will hold up at the connecting sections where it’s collapsing at the angle of the clouds. Usually foams are engineered for compressive forces, but here the primary cushioning mechanism is more like shearing forces of those sections of foam.
Hey, I was wondering if you would recommend these or Nike Pegasus? Asking just because I’ve ran with Nike Pegasus for so long and seeing people switching over to these.
I love On stuff except the shoes haha Once they get rid of the holes “cloud” stuff I’ll get a pair. I saw some prototypes being worn at marathons that look awesome
Does the 10mm offset actually feel a little lower on the run? Seems like the materials/design of the Cloudsurfer might come together in that way. By the way, recently heard this called “dynamic offset”, which seems like a useful way to think about it.
Are they true to size ? Or do they run a bit small ? I typically wear a 12 in most things but lately in Nike Air Max I can get away with a 11.5. If I get a 12 it’s a bit to big. Any suggestions? I really want to order
Kofuzi - may you kick Boston's butt! I think every brand is worth trying once they get Kofuzi's attn. At 200 pounds I am looking for shoes that won't bottom out so I am interested. Thanks
Both are great. I do like the Cloudsurfer more, but it’s also a bit more expensive. I went with my usual running shoe size and it worked well for running
I wear 9.5 women’s wide so I got this shoe in a men’s 8 and it is so narrow. I love my mach 5s from Hoka, is the rocket x2 a similar feel for race day?
normally, I never have rocks in my On (not an issue with cloud flyer, cloud stratus, or cloud monster). I actually did get rocks stuck in this one (just once though)
They seem like a nice nursing work shoe for me. I typically go with Hokas but ON has been coming out with some good shoes lately. I have a pair of Monsters that I train in and enjoy it. So ill give this a shot. Thanks for the review Kofuzi. 💯
I hate running in Altras, I train in 4mms but zero drop just never felt right running. But they are ace for nursing. Its a great recovery walking/on your feet shoe. If you can find a discounted pair (torins are sometimes 1/2 off) and are ok w/ the laughable durability (usually if I can find them for $70 I buy 2 pair) its IMO the best RN shoe.
On’s suck. I bought 3 pair. They literally fall apart, they use shit glue. Especially their hiking range. Waaay to expensive for the quality, Salomon is much better.
Please do not get me wrong, I don't mean that offensiv, and I do agree in your points that you made in the video, but I just have to report our experience with them: I'm working in a performance diagnostics centre with a running shoe store included, we are selling only shoes with an in depth advice before, means: video analysis, feet scan, pressure plate etc: That shoe feels horrible to walk in, 6 employees, we all had knee problems after a day walking in them because the shoe has so much cushion in the heel area that it leads to an overbending knee. For running they are kinda good with a big fat BUT: Sitting on around 30pairs of them because we can't recommend them for anyone that isn't super stable during their run ankle wise. Most customers had massive supination in them. The Cloudrunner does basically everything better in every section if you compare them if you do want an ON. So we are basically on the point, that we try to exchange them with another model, similiar to the Cloudmonster there are not enough people who can run stable and healthy in them. I'm using the monster for standing during work tho lol.
@@CiluBurk ON DOES produce good shoes, the Cloudrunner for example is one of the best daily use, soft trail, and low intensity running shoe I know. But the cloudsurfer is in "our" opinion just a desaster, it feels great the first 30minutes, really, first 30 minutes it felt like the best shoe ever for daily use. But the longer you wear them (not running, walking) the more you notice, this thing is a desaster for walking at least.
Weird.. I just commented on how wonderful a walking shoe this is. I've put 50+ miles running with these.. and spent 2 days in Vegas walking probably more than 20 miles. Feels like the best walking shoe I've ever owned. My typical shoes the last few years have been the last few generations of the Cliftons, really like those too.. but I'd definitely/at this point buy another pair of Cloudsurfers over the Cliftons.
Strange comment. All the employees/runners in the shoe company where I get my shoes are liking/wearing them when working/on their feet. They had On rep this morning do a demo and the club runners all wore this shoe on our morning long run. I have other comments to post above.
@@kenfromphilly752 That is fine for those employees that they liked the shoe... We liked them too on the demo day, otherwise we would have not ordered so many of them. After wearing them in the store an entire day we complained all about tension and problems on the backside of the knee. Please fix your logic and understand a comment first before posting. Because I clearly said, that this shoe is "GOOD" for running... "BUT". It doesn't matter, if you are a neutral decent runner who wants/likes a max cushion shoe, this is a GOOD shoe. But we have them since release and we have not sold a single pair of them, because you can't sell them to most people after they have seen their video running in them. It is a neutral max cushion heel striking shoe = peoples feet supinate/pronate like crazy in it if they are untrained or just free time runners (or genetics). And the most people are that kind of people. And you get way better shoes, for less money. And for people like Kofuzi they are also way better options in the same price range. You can even see Kofuzi is prone to pronate in that shoe, and he is not even heel striking in them + is cutting really well. This brand seems like a religion to some people it seems.
They said the Cloud Monster was great too...at first, then not so much. Kofuzi never says anything critical either. When he says "not loving" it is code for it sucks. On running is a BS fashion brand and they are worse than Hoka. Stay away.
I think you may be oversimplifying / (unintentionally) misrepresenting what I and what others are saying. I presume you don’t do it intentionally, but please be more careful to contrast what you infer against what people have actually said
Such a confusing review. Honestly there really is NO direction where this review is going. But either way. Rest knowing the fact that .. IF YOU'RE COMFORTABLE with these shoes. Then that should ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS IN THE END.

Cheers for another great review from South Loop! Hope you've been enjoying this fantastic fake summer we're having
Always like your categorization; plush daily, speedy max, etc..
I’m glad it’s helpful!
Great looking shoe.
kofuzi!!!!! im really so excited for boston, can't wait for your race recap and runner's weekend videos about it!
Love your video. Always love On as street shoes, but now seriously consider to get a pair for running .
Quite interested in this model. Seems a good step forward for the brand.
I tested these shoes and I feel like these are like a nice recovery shoe
I’ve always been a bit of a skeptic with On’s offerings but this looks like a legitimate daily trainer.
This is it
I recently bought my first pair of On's after using my beloved Hokas for year. Tried the cloud monster first. They were pretty good. However, after trying the surfer's, I was hooked.
I really like this one
Just got me a pair, i usually wear cloudstratus but these are super comfy👍
Glad you like them!
I saw a picture of Kipchoge training in Boston this week in r/Massachusetts so it's getting real.
very good comparison with the 1080v12. They do have a similar utility.
I'm looking into these in the future, because they're really comfy when I tried them, but given that many people have complained of their squeakiness, I'll wait until On works on that issue.
Your shoe reviews seem to be most inline with my running style. In excited to hear your thoughts on the on eclipse
stay tuned
It's similar to Anta Men A-Loop Running shoes but Anta is way affordable. I haven't bought Anta but it's kinda popular in my country and Asia.
i got a pair of these at REI since my yearly dividend rewards covered half the cost.
Hope it works for you!
Hey. Ko. Fu. Zi . Great. Re. View.
Would love to try an On shoe but they are rarely discounted, this looks really good, maybe you could do a comparison with the new Cumulus 25
I have a pair in for testing
Congrats on your 2:41 Boston marathon time!

@@kofuzi oh still good!
Pairing this with the Cloudmonster has been amazing for my road show rotation. This goes long and slow, monster is speedier.
Seems counterintuitive but I could see that
@@kofuzi How is what’s been working for me counterintuitive?
Hope these are better than the cloud monster.
Have you ever had any problems with sand or rocks getting stuck in the "clouds"?
I haven’t! But I also don’t run the rockiest trails :)
absolutely, my pair are very comfortable BUT stone magnets
Hey, I was wondering if you would recommend these or Nike Pegasus? Asking just because I’ve ran with Nike Pegasus for so long and seeing people switching over to these.
I love On stuff except the shoes haha
Once they get rid of the holes “cloud” stuff I’ll get a pair. I saw some prototypes being worn at marathons that look awesome
good things coming, I hope
Does the 10mm offset actually feel a little lower on the run? Seems like the materials/design of the Cloudsurfer might come together in that way. By the way, recently heard this called “dynamic offset”, which seems like a useful way to think about it.
It didn’t feel like a large drop. I’ve been saying for years now that people over-emphasize drop, and that is exacerbated with modern foams
Thanks
Would you recommend these for walking over Clifton 9? And would you stay true to size or size up? Thank you
Both are great. I do like the Cloudsurfer more, but it’s also a bit more expensive. I went with my usual running shoe size and it worked well for running
Is this pair of shoes comfy and cushioned then Nike invincible 3??
I wear 9.5 women’s wide so I got this shoe in a men’s 8 and it is so narrow.
I love my mach 5s from Hoka, is the rocket x2 a similar feel for race day?
no. Mach 5s are totally different. IMO nothing else hoka makes feels quite like the mach 5.
Yo... ❤️
Kofuji kun, whats your tshirts? It is so cool!
Soon they will make shoes with no holes
They already have. The Cloudgo does not have pass thru holes.
And then they may finally have a running shoe.
How do you think this would work with very high arch feet? I’ve had 2 other pairs of on shoes and love them but need to replace them
Would you recommend this shoe for daily 10k?
my daily run is between 10k and 10 miles. I think that is this shoe's best use case
Run a lot on gravel looks like they might have fixed issues with rocks getting stuck in outsole ?
normally, I never have rocks in my On (not an issue with cloud flyer, cloud stratus, or cloud monster).
Hope you enjoy!
More foam > Holes in the foam
One of ons better looking shoes to me.
I really wanted to like it. It felt sloppy and mushy to me, but liked the rocker.
You might prefer On’s legacy offerings
do you think they are more cushioned than the New Balance More foams?
Yes
Nice video I’m not sure to get the orange or green color way of the on show
how it compare to gel nimbus 25?
i agree, it lost its uniqueness, now it is just a cushy Hoka. Though I am not a fan of how there is less and less rubber on shoes.
I felt like it was often uniqueness for uniqueness’ sake. This is a move in the right direction.
I also prefer less rubber on shoes.
does not having outsole in the middle even out the feeling of the drop? making it flatter
No
Why all those shoes from cloud they all have no arch support? Isn’t that bad ?
Is this a good shoe for starting with Triathlon?
maybe not for racing, but otherwise would be a great shoe for your training
@@kofuzi Thank you🙏
Does On has good shoes for racing?
How does this compare to the Cloudmonster?
If you want an On shoe the Surfer is the most comfortable. Close second is Cloudmonster. They are the only 2 On shoes I would run in
Thanks for the video… and answering my question in advance (was gonna ask for the NB1080 v12). Looks like I’m sticking with NB for now.
Can you use to it to ultramarathon.
Is mostly for 5k to half according to their website.
I haven’t bought them yet, but does anyone use these for daily use? Like are they more comfortable than other on shoes?
yes. that is what phrases like "everyday", "easy day", and "daily trainer" signify
Ok, thanks!
The uppers are too thick and hot, just like the CloudMonster. If they could make a very lightweight breathable upper I would try them again.
I would think any FEM analysis would lead them to the conclusion that putting a bunch of holes in a shoe is stupid
(As half the runnjng world runs in Nike air shoes)
The only on shoes as good as this is On cloud tilt.
On’s suck. I bought 3 pair. They literally fall apart, they use shit glue. Especially their hiking range. Waaay to expensive for the quality, Salomon is much better.
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience
Please do not get me wrong, I don't mean that offensiv, and I do agree in your points that you made in the video, but I just have to report our experience with them:
I'm working in a performance diagnostics centre with a running shoe store included, we are selling only shoes with an in depth advice before, means: video analysis, feet scan, pressure plate etc:
That shoe feels horrible to walk in, 6 employees, we all had knee problems after a day walking in them because the shoe has so much cushion in the heel area that it leads to an overbending knee.
For running they are kinda good with a big fat BUT:
Sitting on around 30pairs of them because we can't recommend them for anyone that isn't super stable during their run ankle wise.
Thank you and with that you said it all. I don't buy them anymore 😅
Fresh Foam More though…
Comparison with the Cloudmonster??
They said the Cloud Monster was great too...at first, then not so much. Kofuzi never says anything critical either. When he says "not loving" it is code for it sucks. On running is a BS fashion brand and they are worse than Hoka. Stay away.
I think you may be oversimplifying / (unintentionally) misrepresenting what I and what others are saying. I presume you don’t do it intentionally, but please be more careful to contrast what you infer against what people have actually said
But perhaps this is just on brand satire from an account with this name, and I just missed the joke
So if you had $160 to spend on a easy run, everyday use running shoes, would you buy these shoes?
Not Kofuzi but the rec I'm seeing for that price bracket: Puma Deviate Nitro 2
on, will never be a real runner shoes!!!
You are The GOAT , JOHNGHOLLYOD From The Philippines idol
Friends don’t let friends run in on clouds.
Overpriced hype shoe ❌
Different people value different things.
if you feel overpriced then it's not for you
Such a confusing review. Honestly there really is NO direction where this review is going. But either way. Rest knowing the fact that .. IF YOU'RE COMFORTABLE with these shoes. Then that should ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS IN THE END.
Thank you for the constructive criticism
Those splashes! @vo2maxproductions take note!
