Hey friends! Cold weather is around the corner and I’m getting stoked for snowshoeing and winter camping! Is there a winter gear or adventure video you want to see? Let me know below! - Miranda
I'd love a winter roundup! Like how to warm up your sleeping bag since the old way of hot water in a Nalgene in a sleeping bag is now disposable bottles and a quilt? And is there a better way to pee in the woods in the middle of the night since women can't just reach for a pee bottle like a guy? If you're in a campground v. backpacking, are the little tent heaters safe? >>You're the freaking best thing to happen to outdoor videos! Kudos to you and REI for these -- absolutely love watching and always pick up something new or even just a reminder, even if I think I know 'all' about it. :-) Today you reminded me I need a new hard shell!
A video of you cross country skiing or dog sledding would be cool.
I’ve never been snowshoeing, sooo....a video on that would be cool 😎
I second a snowshoe video!
What do you wear on your legs when it's raining? Do rain paints make you too warm? Or do you let your legs wet with lighter pants and just keep your upper body dry?
Cheers!
"I just found five dollars!" The best part of the seasons/outfits changing.
Her bumper stickers are the real stars of this episode
I’ve been buying (or getting gifted) REI gear for over 50 years. (Back when it was Recreational Equipment Inc.) Miranda, you and your team make some of the most informative, funny (like laugh out loud funny) content available, anywhere. I don’t know how much you get paid to produce these videos... but I’m pretty sure it’s not enough. Thank you for brightening my day. 🌈🙏🏼🚐
I love that fact about starting your hike as if it was 10 degrees colder thanks miranda
My son and I love your show Miranda! He laughs so hard Everytime you say it's my show gosh darn. Keep up the good work👍
Category 0: Desert! Wherein it's super hot, but weirdly you're covered from head to toe.
I have always found it sorta weird that there's this "bucket curve" of skin coverage vs. temperature. Obviously when it's super cold you need all your skin covered, but also when it's Super Hot you also want all your skin covered. Besides skin cancer, the external heating from the sun/desert will actually be more than what your body is producing, so it makes sense to cover up and reflect as much of that away as possible. I guess maybe in the middle of the bucket curve (i.e. moderate temperatures) our bodies are good enough at heat management to just let them do their thing. But at the edges of the curve (super hot/super cold) our bodies can't cope, so we have to take over with technology and just cover everything.
Pretty exciting though that in the near future we might start to see some high tech desert gear using passive radiative cooling paints. In other applications they can passively cool a surface exposed to direct sunlight by up to 10 degC below the ambient air temp, which seems like a pretty good fit for desert gear to me. Just thinking out loud, but I think if the inner surface was black, and the outer surface had radiative paint, then you would basically have a similar passive thermal control system as what's already used on some spacecraft to reject sunlight and dump waste heat (which is the same goal in the desert).
Even better, someday we'll all get stillsuits from Dune. Then I can finally hang up my sun gloves and not have to pack/cache tons of water for desert trips.
A kayaker turned me on to SealSkinz gloves for winter. I bought a pair one size too large and layer them on top of my regular gloves to stay even warmer when my hands are stuck out in the open on hiking poles. As for socks, I've worn non-cushioned SmartWool quarter socks for years, layer them on top of knee-high liners when cold. Yep, looks pretty goofy, but I've never had a blister! lol The REI wool socks are also great, last just as long as SmartWool for me! I still need to try Darn Tough, but have had poor results with Farm to Feet.
Best advice I ever received for colder weather hiking. You should feel cold when you start. Once you start moving, you will warm up.
So true! Be bold - start cold! - Miranda
These videos are always so much fun!
💯 once you learn layering hiking in any condition is a breeze. Also carry micro spikes if you’ll be hiking in cold conditions and there a possibility of ice or fresh snow on the trail.
Also gaiters! Saved me a few times stepping in a hidden creek under the snow (if not wearing tall boots)
AS always, thank you so much for making these videos! Super helpful and always proud to be a member!!!
Start your hike “comfortably cool” is what I was taught in my cold weather survival class in Alaska. So you don’t sweat. Also, mittens are always warmer so I always bring mittens because my hands tend to get very cold.
Eazy peazy. Thanks for keeping it simple. This looks really easy to follow.
Great advice, I took a marathon training class in Edmonton Alberta years ago..our first run was January 2nd and it was 40 below...we layered up and after 3 or 4 miles no one was cold and we ran 15 miles that day. Love your videos Miranda
I love miranda haha her videos are so informative and entertaining
Being raised in Florida and then moving to NY in my 20s, I never knew how to layer. I moved up north with a sweatshirt being my warmest clothing. I learned quickly that I was not made for the cold, but still here 18 years later. Taking my first cold weather backpacking trip Halloween weekend and finally bought myself some wool base layers for the trip. This is an informative and fun video as usual Miranda. Thanks!
I'm making a similar move next year! Any advice for a clueless Southern person?
@@emmaleec1714 Hank Green of the Vlogbrothers made a video called "A Floridian's Guide to Living Somewhere Very Very Cold" which may be helpful:
ruclips.net/video/KVI-blFfDWc/видео.html
From South Florida? Central Florida and up, we have plenty of days where it's 30 degrees in the morning and then 80 by 2pm, plus the humidity that makes the cold colder and the hot, hotter. I've camped many times in January where I woke up and the water bucket was frozen and I was sweating that afternoon.
Such a helpful video!! Thanks so much, love your energy :D
Thanks Miranda! Best fashion show I've ever seen!😊
Thanks for proving links to the gear we need Miranda!
Great suggestions. I love watching your videos!
I got a few Smartwool cami tanks and it's totally changed cool weather comfort during hikes for me, my cotton camis have been keeping me cold and sweaty for over a decade because I couldn't give them up under long sleeves. Thanks Miranda!
Best layering video ever!
Gloves are warm! lol Always so adorable. I super miss cold weather being stuck in South Florida =( Can't wait to see some cold weather camping tip videos!
I love this big-picture overview. I grew camping and hiking a little, but I'm pretty new to a more technical approach to dressing for outdoor activity. Wearing stuff that's a little more capable is an empowering feeling.
First! Love Miranda’s videos 👍🏼
Gosh darn... that's fun!
Oh! Thanks to Miranda for clarifying some of the layering for me -- in an easy and informative way, too! I didn't know there was a difference between mid-layer and insulating layer, but that's why these videos exist!
Glad it was helpful! - Miranda
I love it! TFS
Love these videos so much, this girl always makes me laugh
Thanks for the Video Keep them coming !
I love these videos! Freaking awesome
Miranda girl you rock! ✨🤘✨
I love all your layers.. wish i could have them all 😊
You make great informative fun videos.
wool tank top: brilliant!
Miranda is the best!
Miranda seems like the best hiking buddy!
It was helpful and so much fun to watch, I love you!
What was your favorite part?
BAM! 😂😂😂 I literally LOLed
Great video, Miranda...👍
Good advice about why to avoid cotton.
I love these videos! I have been interested in snowshoeing but I don’t know how to buy snowshoes! Maybe a snowshoeing gear video please?
Great suggestion! Thanks! - Miranda
Crampons / micro-spikes are much cheaper than snowshoes and work on winter trails when there's just ice or compact snow (rather than fresh powder). Easy to strap on your boots or carry in your bag. Worth looking into!
Rent some msr
I like cotton t-shirts in the heat. I do always take layers in case I have to change.
I love you Miranda!
Groovy ✌️
yay! sundays
Living in Southern California, I don't miss the rain at all. Most of my outdoor clothes are from Columbia it prevent me from sunburn . I made a silly mistake 7 years ago by hiking the Great Wall of China in March with my wool coat, snow on the ground but I was getting too warm from my hike. I didn't do any research on hiking the Great Wall before my visit
I like your bumper stickers ✌️
There are different types of cotton wear. My base layer used to be cotton fit for under -30 degree Celsius. And cotton wear is one of the best for tropical and desert environment.
Miranda you’re truly are a REI goddess…everything thing you do is more amazing than the next! Your so lovely and I can’t wait for the next video! ❤️😱❤️
I'd like to see you check out Duluth Flex dry on the fly pants and shorts. I recently bought a pair of the shorts and pants this summer and introduced them into my hiking/fishing clothes and I think they're absolutely amazing for those applications. Would like to hear your opinion on them for hiking and backpacking. *EDIT* Also would be interesting to see Miranda do an urban/traveling van camping survival video in Vincent. Cause sometimes its a long drive to get where you're going to camp/hike and an alternative to hotels/motels is always preferable to me. You and Vincent Van Gogh have inspired me too, my next big purchase will be a van and having it gutted and custom outfitted for traveling/van camping. Going to name her Vanya Tucker in honor of Tanya Tucker.
Miranda was paid $5 to make this video
Basically, you're showing the seasonal fashion phases of Trader Joes, through all four seasons. Everything that you're wearing, you will find someone in the parking lot of any Trader Joes driving a Subaru, Rav4, 4Runner, or a Honda HR-V wearing the same thing.
😁
Sometime in 2021 REI mysteriously has a Layer My Clothing for the Walking ad campaign they didn't know they needed. :)

I wonder how much time was added to the shoot for the laughing. 😄
Crap. I wish this video came out yesterday. Hiked some trails at Bear Mountain today in NY and could have used some of these tips. :p
I love how this video is info-packed for a clueless person like me who needs to shop for hiking clothes. I just wish she talked slower. Playing it back at 0.75 speed now. :D
Hey REI, I would love to see a video on the best midlayer comparing the Patagonia r1 to all the other brands similar products.
I would love a video on how to store all your camping gear.
Great idea! ⛺🥾🎒
Just stumbled upon this. Cool video! Love the informative, right-to-the-point info and your fun personality. I tend to wear a lot of cotton because I like the way it feels against my skin. I should probably incorporate some more quick dry, wicking items into my wardrobe. Do you know if there are any wool or synthetic brands that tend to make extra soft and sensitive skin friendly clothing?
The best one for softness is icebreaker. Soft as cotton, really comfy. But, minus33 and smartwool are both very good.
cotton is crucial for hotter-than-body temperature hiking though! you kind of mentioned that, but it's actually the preferred material for extreme heat vs. synthetic or wool
You are right! It gets a bad reputation, but cotton definitely has a place in outdoor apparel. Thanks for the call-out! - Miranda
Which is why military combat uniforms are typically at least 50% cotton.
After living and backpacking in southern Arizona for 40 years, I have learned that wearing cotton certainly has its advantages in certain conditions. For example: You may find yourself hiking between May and October. If you're switchbacking up steep slopes to a high ridge and your cotton shirt is soaked from sweat you learn to take advantage of every shaded and/or breezy place. Because when you stop and turn your body so that the breeze is coming from the side and lean back to let the wind flow between the pack and your back, the evaporative affect is very effective because of the generally low humidity. You can get chilled very quickly which is good because it cools the blood in the skin which is then pumped inward to help cool your core. But, I still use mostly synthetics. You are still sweating but you are kept cool by the moisture wicking away without condensing and soaking the material.
As an overall baselayer a wool/synthetic blend will outperform anything else. Thicker for cooler temps, thinner for the heat. A 50/50 blend seems to be the best of both worlds
Hi, i sweat a lot during the hiking and if its winter time i get cold and get sick. Please can you make a video about what to do after sweating and when you stop fpr camping for not getting sick. Please? Miranda? Hello? Mirandaaaa?
One thing I haven't seen in these vids are winter outershells for windy winter dry weather? I just normally see rain jackets.
Great informative video. Thanks, Miranda and REI. It's the exact info I've been looking for for a long time. Except that I'm vegan. What are some easy care, effective, well performing vegan substitutes for wool in winter backpacking gear? Namaste'.
This was super helpful!! Could you do a video explaining why you like the articles of clothing you have in this video? I really am torn because there are so many options for layers. I just like to know why people decide on the stuff they have. I loved the video though! I am just getting into hiking more : ) I want to have good gear that lasts. Always looking for recommendations.
Hi, Kayli. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion! After the basics are covered, gear choices can get subjective, but we've got an idea. Have you ever considered making an appointment with one of our virtual outfitters? They can take a deeper dive with you and make gear recommendations based upon your wants, needs and preferences. What kind of watch do you use? I am looking at buying a GPS enabled smartwatch and I'd love to know what works for you!
When choosing everything else that goes on top of your base layers, do you size up in your puffer and rain jacket to make sure everything fits comfortably underneath?
Ugh u my type of wine buddy 👍😋😘
@REI, please carry more petite sized clothing, especially base layers. It's hard to wear base layers that are way too long and wide underneath petite-sized clothes.
Agree. REI sizing is not inclusive at all. Average US women’s height is only 5’ 4”, but most of their clothes are suitable for broader shoulders and longer limbs.
I wish you would’ve linked those long (taupey) pants you were wearing. That’s the hardest part for me to find is lightweight pants like that that look good.
Hi Carmen! For something similar check out the Halle straight pants by PrAna (REI item #154935).
i love it when my "past" self leave money for "future" self
Do you think merino wool underwear also makes a big difference?
Which shorts are you wearing with the front zip pockets?
I wish people would include temp ranges when they mention “cool, colder, summer, fall” etc. Being from south Florida, everything is hot lol. I’ll go up north a few times out of the year but I never really know how to prepare.
Do you have a link to your tank tops?
GoodStuff™ Good video.
Need a vid on carrying binoculars and gps device when backpacking
What pants are those? I hike where there are ticks and its hot much of the year. Looking for the perfect pair of pants.
There are also a couple very useful outdoor clothing options worth mentioning that aren't typically marketed to average hikers. That's honestly because they're difficult to explain to customers.
One is 'string underwear' (not of the 'G' variety, silly!) They are a shirt and pants made of nylon netted material. I wear this over a merino wool base layer to allow more airflow, which greatly extends the insulating abilities of your mid layers by keeping them extra dry. It also works well without any mid layers in rainy conditions when worn between the base layer and hard shell layer, by lifting the outer shell away from skin to reduce conductive heat loss. Additionally it prevents condensation and/or sweat from accumulating inside of the shell.
Sometimes I also wear a sports jersey type mesh t-shirt over the netted underwear instead of wool mid layers when a slight more warmth is needed. Both materials are very lightweight and compact to carry, but they're best worn while on the move. If I sit to rest a bit and start to feel a little too drafty, I cinch up the cuffs, waist, and collar of my outer layer to trap the warm air in until I'm up and moving again.
I prefer sports trainer pants that are made of a thin layer of ripstop nylon and nylon mesh lining to wear underneath durable shell pants. I opt for these instead of traditional string underwear pants because they're more soft and comfortable and they also work a bit better at keeping the cold, wet outer shell pants off of direct contact with skin.
I do always pack a merino wool mid layer or two as well, in case it starts getting too chilly; especially for relaxing around camp in evenings and early mornings.
Finally, for extreme cold such as in icy winter conditions, thermal-reflective 'vapor barrier' shirt, socks, glove liners, and possibly pants can work miracles. They can be a lifesaver if you've fallen through ice and gotten drenched, or are otherwise just getting too cold. They work by trapping in humidity until the air next to your skin is too saturated to absorb any more vapor. Bear in mind, moisture 'wicking' materials only work on sweat and condensation, but have no effect on vaporized water that constantly emits from skin even when not sweating.
A vapor barrier serves several vital body heat retaining functions. First, it prevents unnecessary loss of hydration by stopping water vapor from leaving through skin, and in doing so, holds in more heat energy that would have normally left the body through that constant evaporation.
Secondly, in locking in that humidity, it keeps the vapor from getting into mid layers and/or loft layers where it would be cooled from the outside to form liquid condensation within those insulating layers. Such dampness (sometimes even ice) within the fabrics would have severely reduced their insulating properties.
Hope these rare insights help you make well-informed decisions in putting together your personal outdoor clothing system. And if you've read this far, you can understand why REI and others don't think it would be feasible to market these products, given their staff would be thanklessly tasked with explaining how it works lol
I'd link you to the excellent garments I personally use, but with respect to REI, I won't promote products here from other businesses. Wish you an awe-inspiring time making wonderful memories in the wilderness, and luck in figuring out the best gear to keep you safe and comfy along the way!
I hike in the northeast (VT, NH). I am always hesitant to wear shorts even if it’s hot outside as I worry about bugs and Lyme disease. Any good rule of thumbs I could use to decide when it is ok to wear shorts?
Do you size up on your rain coat and other outer coat layers so you have room for all those extra layers underneath?
Hey Kristin! I haven't needed to size up anything, but each brand runs differently. Ideally, I like to try stuff on with all of my other layers before buying! - Miranda
Please make a hemp clothing reviews vs wool

Do you wear rain pants ?
Beanies are always really tight on my head. I get compression headaches from tight head gear and wearing a beanie brings on an unbearable headache. Any beanie alternatives or not tight beanies? I’m curious if there’s solutions or other people who also get headaches with tight hats?
The better sweater beanie comes in two sizes. I’ve compared both and the smaller one is big enough for most, the size up is considerably larger and should accommodate everyone else. They rim is now doubled over so it’s easier to get on/off and feels more substantial. Great hat

Why two different puffys? Do they have different warmth ratings?
Here ya go, and I didn't even have to go off brand! ahahahah Good info, hope it helps... www.rei.com/blog/camp/down-vs-synthetic-which-insulation-is-right-for-you
Great question! My Patagonia Nano Puff isn't quite warm enough for the winter, but it's perfect for the rest of the year when the down layer would be too much! Since everyone warms and cools differently, two insulated jackets is likely not necessary for everyone. - Miranda
out of nosy curiosity- why synthetic vs down? (i'm personally allergic, and i find it's real rare to see someone else who doesn't use down, especially when they backpack)
Down loses its insulating quality when wet and takes a long time to dry. Also, down is usually more expensive than synthetic.
Hi Miranda can you do another food show for vegan backpackers? Love the show.
Absolutely! Thanks for the suggestion! - Miranda
I have kind of a dumb question if someone could answer it for me: what does she mean by “synthetics”? Are we talking polyester-type fabric? What are some examples?
I know I'm two years late to this but @rei really should do videos like this for men to... Dont get me wrong I love Miranda in the Wild but I don't think I will be hiking in leggings any time soon. :)
