“Wave goodbye as I outgrow the shadow of Peter Pan, It’s time to be a man.” Matt will always be the king of metaphor. Always makes me get a tear in my time every time I hear this song 😢
I think this is my favorite song on the record. I've actually teared up a few times, thinking about the plans I had when I was 18, 19, 20 and where my life went from there. And as I'm turning 27, this song just hits so close to home. Especially with the references to Peter Pan (and of course the symmetry with This is the End (If You Want It) from FANSD), it's just such a well-composed song. I love it.
Swear they write songs for every moment in my life. Love and respect Relient k more and more with every song. So grateful they let us grow alongside them.
Its so weird how their music can do that. There is plenty of other art that came out at the same time, but RK just has that sound that really takes you back then.
I know people are gonna disagree with me strongly, but this is their best album. I don’t care if the pop punk sound is less in this one, it’s their greatest because of how it’s written and how it sounds. Had so many memories with this album in 9th grade. Amazing memories.
I was in my early 20s when this album came out, and I agree wholeheartedly. I've been in love with Relient K since MMHMM but they've only gotten better and better over the years and this album is their best. Can't believe it's been over seven years since it came out... feels like yesterday
This song inspires us all to grow up a little, to stand strong, and to leave childish things behind. Paul said that when he became a man, he did things in the way of a man and let go of the childish things.
But when I became a man I put away childish things. Just like the bible says. This song is a tearjerker. But It gives me some serious insight on life and the future. It makes me cry yes but it gives me realization i know the man i can be is so much more than what I've been.
"I used to see all of the world in positivity, and I've been lost at sea inside a house of Driftwood Avenue, and I, I made a mess out of the life that lay ahead of me...the clock is ticking faster now...the clock is ticking faster now..."

What I love about the "clock is ticking faster now" line is that the music and beat intentionally pick up speed throughout the song as if to reflect this sentiment. It's something that just adds depth to these lines as a whole.
I’m sad I waited so long to really get into this album. Grew up loving Relient K, but got mired down by disliking some of the newer stuff when I was in college. Listening to this album again though, as my first child was born and I’m approaching 27 years old, it’s such an incredible album. Love you Relient K!
First show I attended was on back to the few tour 2002. Never a disappointment since. At 32 my khaki pants are pretty worn out and I've probably eaten too many skittles and combos. This tune is fantastic. Also, pretty sure Hoopes should qualify to be a junior member of the Zissou Society.
Samuel Blenke, what you mentioned is correct but I think he was referring to the last track on the album Forget and Not Slow Down. The last track to parter This is the End mentioned how he wants be like Peter Pan and sail to never land and escape his problems as he was dealing with the after math of his breakup with his fiancé
I think it's more pirates who don't do anything over peter pan, but Renae just blew my mind and got me thinking with the Neverland reference in This Is The End from forget and not slow down...lol - he's so genius
I usually get most of Matt's lyrics, but I'm hung up on this "Hoffman" character he speaks of in the first line of this song. Can someone shed some light?
From my perception about the lyrics, it defines someone who has lived not thinking about consequences and, for that, woke up in a middle of a mess made by oneself. When he realised this, he decided not only to accept consequences but, also, live a real life. Free of the kid ways of living impulsively... Thinking with his upper head, IFYKWIM
Jeremy Deutch psh, you kidding me? Don't think I could ever dislike a Relient K song. Especially a challenge like this B) I think about it when I start to fall asleep again..
As a father of three, its hard to be a man. Providing, being strong, guiding and spiritual leadership. Thanks for the reminder Matt

Best comment!
I feel the freaking same!!
I hear you! You can feel the heart in every lyric.
I really missed their stuff. Listening to an actual album by Relient K makes me feel so much nostalgia.

I am currently in 8th grade and I am slowly getting a feeling for this music

Listening to This Is The End (If You Want It) and listening to this directly after is such a beautiful experience.
This album is beyond epicness
I really need this lyrics
So Much Thanks RK!
I have a lyrics site that I just started, and I have the lyrics for all of the songs from the Air For Free album! relientklyrics.weebly.com

I wish you could post the lyrics of their previous albums also, if you could
Just posted the entire FANSD album! I'll work on the others when I have time.

Put away childish things for sure but don't put away the child
This is a really nice song to wake up to.
0:37 Pirates Who Don't Do Anything reference.
Lol, I thought that sounded familiar;)
Nah, Peter Pan reference.

This song directly says "Wave goodbye as I outgrow the shadow of Peter Pan"

I googled "Hoffman in a swimming pool" a few weeks ago and didn't really learn much.
Matt is referring to Dustin Hoffman's character swimming scene in the movie The Graduate
+Tj Brooks Awesome! Thanks for the light. I'll check out the movie.
Is it the scene where he's floating, or the one where he's submerged in scuba gear ("under the weight of society")?
This song makes me so sad 😭 I WANNA BE A KID FOREVER.
same man
0:49 I want it to be my alarm clock
Not a bad idea, building.. not a bad idea.
It's been my alarm clock since this song released 😁

How do you define "man"?
From my perception about the lyrics, it defines someone who has lived not thinking about consequences and, for that, woke up in a middle of a mess made by oneself. To take responsibility for your life and actions.
this song triggers me
you one of the 4 that disliked it?
You must not have woken up ;)
