Bro, yours is the ONLY video out there that is even remotely helpful, let alone as descriptive and accurate as yours. Thanks. I think people should be aware that how they name the video determines whether it will ever be found and seen by the tight people. Thanks again!
FINALLY!!! Someone who actually did a video on how to disassemble the lower unit on these Evinrude/Johnsons. Chris you did an awesome job. I was considering doing a video, because I could not find one and I have so many people asking me how to do it. I wish before I had someone to point them to, now I do. Thank you.
Chris M . great video i have a 96 Johnson venom 200 with exact same problem however looks a little different. how do i remove the bearing assembly on that? is it threaded in?
The timing on is perfect. I’m about to do this work on a 1988 Johnson 90 hp that jumps out of gear under a WOT load. Best video I’ve seen about the disassembly. Thank you.
Remember to measure the shift rod length before removing or count how may turns you make unscrewing it. It will make your reinstallation much smoother. 😁 Nice video
I have a boat I just bought it has a 35 horse Johnson on it it's a 1959 and watching your video I see you know what you're doing going to start tinkering with it this weekend so I'm looking forward to some helpful hints from you thanks for your video that was awesome
Bob Bell I just did mine. I used 3 large snap hooks i bought at home depot $2.50 each(marine section) and some chain. A puller from auto parts store. Open up the small end of the snap hook(where rope would go) that is what will hook around the 3 supports of the carrier. The top support is a little smaller than the other 2 so I had to adjust the hook by putting it in a vice and hammer it down about a half inch. This way all chain lengths were 3 links. Removed long puller hooks off of the puller and used the shackles to connect the 3 chain pieces. I had to widen the link that went to the hook as it wouldn't fit through. 1983 Johnson 40...once ready had it out in 5 minutes
Excellent video Sir, I personally use a slide hammer to attempt bearing carrier removal (short of doing any damage of course) prior to using a puller, but I liked this video. Always looking for easier more effective ways to make the job less painful and irritating. Thanks for sharing.
Great video . I have evinrude 1977 75hp I messed up my shift gear ajustment. My neutral locked in reversed gear ffs I lower it in water and got a whole new problem . Now these snap rings giving me another battle mostly because not having the right tools .But this video is giving me some hope .
What a great video You're easy to learn from you give good direction you should be an instructor You're easy to learn fromThanks for the lesson and all the information I look forward to more videos from you
Wondering how similar this unit is to a Johnson 130 1998 lower unit with the V6 case. But very informative and appreciate your knowledge you were very thoughtful and thorough to sharing
great video, the other three videos i watched skipped over a few VERY IMPORTANT steps that had me a fighting to get my lower unit apart. glad you could clear things up for me.
Bear in mind that for clutch dog damage, you can easily use a Dremel with a properly sized and beveled wheel to grind a one degree angle back into the dog. Start at the base and don't be tempted to go more than one degree or it'll lock in gear!
thank you saved 2 grand doing this. Got my parts off eBay around 400 with the special wrench for pinion gear nut . I would have scrapped the outboard in not for this video. really not hard . marina wanted 2.400 outboard isn't worth to old but for 400 and little fun project thanks again
For everyone trying to get the lower unit back on and cant get the shifting rod hole to line up w the pin i figured it out, adust the throttle either in forward or reverse till it lines up. Took me hours to figure that out
great video! Simplified but still very informative. Using your video I have gotten to the point of removing the prop shaft which I can not figure out how to remove since it has a different shift assembly than yours. It's a 76' evinrude 85hp with hydrolic oil pump. Can you shed some light on my predicament... Greatly appreciated
I have a 1988 Erude150....theres a phillips screw thats on the starboard side of the lower unit just in front of the water pickup. If that screw was removed in thinking it was the lower unit oil fill hole, then it was put back in....is there anything that could damage to the gears by removing and then replacing that screw. Thanks for your time, hope to hear back
Yes Sir, Thanks.. my top Needle Bearing was Locked up, and I got the Nut off of the Pinion gear.. The Drive shaft wont Come Out through the pinion gear.. I have Another foot with a cracked Housing with All Good parts.. How Do I force the Top drive shaft Out Please??
This is excellent, just what I needed. I have one lower unit that I cracked up the gear casing on a rock but the internal parts seem fine. I have another lower unit that the gear casing is fine but there is definitely something wrong as there is a loud noise in the lower unit and metal shavings. Plan is to rebuild one good lower unit out of the 2. Any idea if or where I could find torque specs for putting it back together?
4:25 my gear fell out with a bunch of small pin rollers. Where the heck did those come from, and go back to? I'm having a very hard time getting the shaft and gear changing mech out...I think some of my gears that have shaved off, have got lodged and wedged making this portion very hard....lol. Thanks for showing the steps....
Is it a bad sign if I can pull the bearing assembly out by hand without a puller I put my puller on and went to tighten my puller to the shaft and noticed it started to move without any tension
Great video here. I was doing a impellor re kit on my lower unit of a 1985 25Hp Evinrude and i removed the gear dog locator pin. Now ive got the unit back up attached to the leg but the pin won't go back in and i tried moving the gear dog around, I cant get neutral or anything. The lever jump from forward to back skipping over neutral and nothings really engaging. Is it a full pull apart job from here or is it possible to get it bck in?. Ive tried pokejng aroind in there and in through a il drain plug hole right next to it. The dog clutch i think it is moves a fraction but then returns to where it was making it impossible to locate a hole.
I have the same lower unit on my 200 2 stroke Johnson (1999) and my problem started with just not engaging in reverse. No noises, no vibration, no nothing... but then I noticed that the prop has about 1/2" of in/out play. Haven't gotten into it yet... but I know the prop nut is tight and that the play is in the shaft. Any thoughts?
I like the way you did that and am considering overhauling the lower unit in my 1985 Evinrude 60. Some of those parts you took out look pretty problematic to get back together. Do you have an instructional on re-assembly? Also, where did you get replacement parts?
Thanks for this video! Can you make one for reassembly? I'm particularly interested in the pinion gear re install. Is this the basic equal dis/reassembly for a smaller OMC lower unit? I have a 99 50hp. Thank you!
I noticed the forward gear was sloppy on the prop shaft. Mine is the same way but my bushing looks a little worn. Is that normal? should the forward gear bushing be sloppy on the prop shaft?
Hello sir....great video, you are highly skilled for sure. I have a 1999 Johnson Ocean Pro 150. I had water intrusion in my lower unit. I also heard a slight metal to metal sound while in gear...and I believe it was coming from the lower unit...again the sound was slight. When I checked my LU oil after a fresh change...it was milky and burnt smelling after a short time on the water. Note ...I have a parts motor and have the LU dropped with shift housing and water pump removed. Those should be easy. My question is....to replace my prop shaft seals on my 99 I see I have to remove the large LU bearing carrier...I have seen the pullers used for this and that is no problem...but in my shop manual it has me confused into thinking that a reverse gear is somehow inner twined with my bearing carrier....so to simplify my question....on a 99 Johnson OP 150....using a puller....can i simply remove the large bearing carrier.....or do I have to disconnect the reverse gear in any way....???? My guess is that I am reading the manual incorrectly and that the reverse gear will be like yours in the video...behind the snap rings.......thank u sir
great info. have a 73 85hp that i have disassembled, however, the trust bearing cover will not come off and the drive shaft is seized (will not turn). gears look fine. any suggestion on how to get drive shaft out when stuck
What were the symptoms of the damage that led you to take it apart? I have a 115 evinrude that has a slight knocking when engine is in gear. when Im in neutral I dont hear any noise.
When you use the 7/8 wrench inside to take out the lock nut, ours is completely rounded off. How can we get it out since there isn't anything for the wrench to bite on?
I am having trouble getting the snap rings out of the case. It's a 1990 60hp long shaft. I got a pair of 11" needlenose pliers and ground them down to fit in the holes. That thing is loose and rotated in there, but I can't get enough clearance to get it out. And ideas?
I don't know if you will answer this, but I see the problem, which is failure of the gear, but have you determined what caused the gears to fail? Was something else wore to the point it cause to much or to little clearance in those gears? Did the metal fail? If I reinstall, will just placing new gears and seals going to solve the problem, or is the samething going to fail because the actual problem wasn't corrected?
How similar would a 1976 70hp Evinrude be to this? Got one that won't stay in reverse even if I manually shift it with the linkage disconnected. It just bucks and kicks.
I have a question. I accidently took the Philips screw out of my lower thinking it was a drain plug. Now it won't go back in. What will i have to do to get this in order
GULF ASSASIN I have the same lower unit Johnson 115 1981 and can’t get it to shift forward or reverse . Can I still get the prop shaft out without shifting to reverse ? Water was in the oil and it sat up a few years. Shifted fine before for 15 years plus . Never knew to change or check the lower unit oil lol 😂
Awesome video Chris. I have a Johnson 115 1977 outboard. I noticed that oil is coming out of the hole where the "setscrew" is. The hole and screw are located right next to the water intake screen. I'm afraid that the screw has become disengaged from what it was holding in place. Do you happen to know what it is supposed to keep in place? Thanks so much. Evan
I had a blown forward and pinion gear that I replaced last season. The rebuild worked for only a month until it destroyed both gears again. Did I possibly miss something on the rebuild that could of caused this? Incorrect shimming? or a high idle? Any help is appreciated, thanks. Great Video!
No fancy intro. No music. Straight and to the point video. I clicked like and subscribed as soon as the video was over.

Thank you for the excellent video, that helped me out so much to figure out the lower is fine, now the pain begins.....
Thanks very much. Nice clear video showing the sequential steps, and only took 7 mins.
Loved this video! Straight to the point and no babbling on and on. My kinda video, awesome job!
John Mcguire Thanks, I appreciate it.
You're a good teacher. Not a lot of wasted words. I've got an OMC Stringer 800 and this will help me with that. Thanks

thank you learned a lot from this video
yeah I really liked this video! you did a great job explaining it and showing and telling really helped me with my 85ETLR78C motor
Nice video. It sure helped on my disassembly of my Evinrude.
good video. informative. working on a 75 hp evinrude. didn't know about those four bolts.

Very good job all around, Chris !

Thank you for the video, great information
Thank you for this. Do you have a video putting it back together?
Thank you for taking the time to do this video.
What socket is used for the drive shaft so you can remove the pinion nut?

Very helpful! Thanks - but question, why is it important to have it in reverse before removing it?
it needs to be all the way down for the assembly to slide out.
Great video, thanks for posting!
Do you have one reassembling the lower unit? setting the shift rod and things?
