Blown away. I just found you, Tim Pierce. I had no idea you were the genius behind "Runaway" and "Love Somebody": 2 of my all-time favorite guitar solos. It only took 30 years and the internet.
Thank you Tim!! As an American "guy" fan of more than 30 years, this might be my favorite RS interview ever. Nothing but gear, music and stories from the road - LOVE IT!
"Rock Of Life" is one of the most important records of my life. It's a shame that Rick had that accident back then so that the album and those songs never really ended up in the public memory. "Tear It All Down" and "World Start Turning" are some of the best rock tracks that never became hits. So thank you Tim & Rick !
Oh man. Love Rock of Life. I had loved Oz so much. When that accident happened I was terrified we'd never hear from him again. There was a several year period with that RS accident, Rick Allen lost his arm and Steve Clark died. I thought Rock was over. Of coure if you listen to the radio, it kind of was after that. Thank god Rick got back up like he ALWAYS does.
Tim Pierce is SO right in this. Rick was at the time they were recording this interview, and still is, doing his best stuff. SDAA, VIO, SFTEOTW, and Rocket Science. Eight years later I STILL can NOT get enough of What's Victoria's Secret?
Great inside talk. It is great to know that you both can hang out shoot the shit and play. In world with so many musicians who do not talk to each other this was a great breath of fresh air.
I love learning about the production side of making music and hearing the stories behind the music. The "living room" feel of the interview was great; it was one of the most relaxed interviews I've seen Rick do...and thank you for using my question,Tim!
TIM, YOU ARE AMAZING! I REMEMBER SEEING YOU SITTING IN THE AUDIENCE AT THE WILTERN A FEW YEARS AGO, RICK CALLED YOU UP ON STAGE,. WHAT A PERFORMANCE!! YOU ARE IN A CLASS ALL BY YOURSELF, DUDE!!!!
Thank you Tim. You're a shining member of the Fabulous Eels!! My Mom drove me from Monterey, California down to L.A. when I was 10 years old in 1982 to see Rick and you guys at the Universal Amphitheater. An amazing show and one of the best days of my life. Thank you.
Tim, just so digging the talk and the jam at the end. You two were my guitar heroes over all the great guitar players in the 80s. I poured over Living in Oz. When Rick talks about Cliff Richard and Hank Marvin it's cool to hear you guys talk about a similar admiration. Thanks for getting me started on a pure joy in my life.
You have done some amazing work with Rick.Affair Of The Heart and Love Somebody are some of my favorites.Rick absolutely rocks as you mentioned in this interview and one of my favorite CDs is his Greatest Hits Alive.
Love it! Access to things like this is gold. Being in Western Australia, we miss a lot of tours etc. Hopefully, Rick will tour here one day with his band! Thanks Tim. I try to use a lot of your licks when I play most weeks! Cheers.
I really really loved this interview and almost 'forgot' how talented you two guys are and what brilliantly crafted music you made/make....thanks very much Tim !
Awesome. In all seriousness, it is nice to sit back and listen to a relaxed conversation with two grown men where they are not trying to act like ignorant 19-year olds.
Great interview, I love seeing old friends talking about back in the day and roasting each other. Rick seems as mellow and laid back as you, I wish I would have went to one of his concerts when you were playing in the band, I'm know you just tore it up. Thanks again for being on youtube now and having you own webpage, you have become my favorite guitarist and online teacher and being in my mid 50's I have had a lot of guys I looked up to "Jimi, Jeff Beck, Alvin Lee, Slash just to name a few. I watch you listen to a song and ad what it needs and were it needs it that turns it from a good average song to an awesome song.
Since this was nostalgic video, let me join in and state that I saw Rick in Sydney with Zoot. One of the songs they played was their national hit at the time "Eleanor Rigby". Hey Rick, I too have moved to the US.
I really enjoy Tim's channel. What a great player. And Ricks still the same cool guy! Hey Tim did you ever shop at wild west guitars in Albuquerque NM when you lived there? That was a great store...
Oh, this is just fantastic. Really a gift to get to watch the two of you talk. I was fascinated to hear about the Marshalls you had made, based on Giraldo's 4140's. I've always been super curious as to what your live rig was like back on those early 80's tours. I also remember seeing lots of Roland JC-120 heads. Is my memory playing tricks on me? Thanks, again, for sharing this. I can't wait to see what's to come!
I’m watching this in 2021. Rick is 72, now? I seem to remember Rick being a Teen Hearthrob in the early-mid ‘70’s and even had an animated character series, unless I’m misremembering. I didn’t know any of his music until Jesse’s Girl, etc. Seems like a real guy. I like these types of interviews. Old friends getting together and reminiscing. Being old, myself.
Rick is the only human on earth ever to master the deadly art of guitar throw and catch. Others like Yngwie, GE Smith and and Blackmore have done it. But nobody throws it higher and catches it with one hand right when the song ends. He has probably done it more than anyone. Nobody does it better. I wonder how Rick perfected this. Would you happen to know Tim? I mean you must have been with Rick more than anyone else. Wish Rick could shed some light on this. This is the coolest show stunt ever done in all of Rock n Roll. Rick is the King of Pop Rock.
Thanks for posting this. I find it interesting that Rick names his vehicles. I actually named my 9 year old Ford Escape after him. Alas it was recently totaled. You and Rick are great together. New subscriber from Nashville.
Tat was very cool!! man all profession aside, how cool it must be to play on all these great musicians albums. I would love to cut a lead on a Rick Springfield album!! Really inspired to see you doing this man!!
Hey fellas - Tim and Rick, awesome electric players! But I have to say, the acoustic jam at the end speaks for your talent. You both need to feature more of this playing. I'm a '53 model whose been playing some sort of music since age five. Love your style of interviewing an old friend and bandmade Tim. Glad I discovered your channel. Can't wait to delve into the old and new. Rock on Sound City!
See you in Germany live at "Rock am Ring" (Nürnberg Ring in Germany) in 1985. And already at that time impressed in your guitar playing. There is a live stream of that Gig on RUclips.
Rick, Tim Pierce is by far the best guitarist you have ever had play in any of your touring bands ( and you have had many decent touring guitarists over the years)
Tim Pierce Guitar I have to ask you this because to be honest, I will never get to ask Rick Springfield myself. About 30+ years ago I saw an interview with Jimi Hendrix where he actually said, "I think that Rick Springfield is the best rhythm guitar player I ever heard". Everyone I tell this to thinks I'm crazy and that I heard wrong, YET recently I read in the book "Jimi Hendrix Experience" that Jimi played with many musicians in his day in the various night clubs in L.A. It mentions a YOUNG Rick Springfield as one of the many musicians he jumped on stage with. This somewhat confirms I heard right. Do you know anything about this? Did Jimi Hendrix say this about Rick Springfield to your knowledge? Anyways, thanks for bringing us some awesome guitar playing. You are one of my favorites!

I've appreciated Rick way back from Zoot, in Australia. Pity the reunion and revitalised line-up with Russell Morris only produced one single. There's still time!!
Hi Tim, u are a huge influence! Are u going to post lessons of your work from Living in Oz or any of the other work u did with Rick? I would too see u break down the licks and tones from the albums.
It's fun to see this in Tim's den. As an old school rock guy, I would have preferred the interview take place somewhere more like Naica's crystal cave or in some underwater lair. Let the rock gods play.
Tim I'm a 55 year old guy who believes he has good taste in music. Also been playing since i'm five ( always learn a lot from your lessons). I firmly believe if Springfielsd wasn't a good looking guy who was sold to little girls he would be remembered today as one of the greats of power pop.

Haha. Rick asked where all the guys were in the 80's at his shows. I'm a guy (51 now graduaded HS in 83) Trust me I was at his concerts in the 80's. Guys would say, "why do you go to his shows? Seriously I owe Rick a lot of thanks as the best wing man ever. As an 18 to 25 year old back then if you couldn't get a hot chick that was ready to "rock and roll" after (or at) a Rick Springfield concert, you just weren't trying. Tim,
Is that an ovation tornado behind Rick‘s shoulder on the left-hand side?
