If TOPAZ DENOISE AI has Sharpening/Detail Recovering built into it, is good enough? ((Do I still need to use TOPAZ SHARPEN AI?)) Find out in todays tutorial. I have talked about this subject in the past but I wanted to go over it again and provide more clarity with some image examples.

I use Sharpen AI for less than one percent of my images. Sharpen AI is as savior with impossible but much needed images - like the one of your dead dog - but the result will always look like a reconstruction. DeNoise AI is a blessing.

Dave, I’m confused about linear profile. You stated that you could not use the linear profile with Denoise or AI Sharpen however, I noticed that your first images’s profile was a linear. Would you please clarify this point. Thanks Dave!

I purchased the suite (Denoise, Sharpen, Gigapixel) and I'm very happy with the results. They may not replace Lightroom/Photoshop - but they certainly enhance them. Nice review.

As every very clear, informative, and helpful. if I need to use Gigapixel do I use it before or after Denoise, and or Sharpen? The herons in question were just too far away, ISO mostly 320 but some up at ISO 2000+

I have an odd question Dave that I am hoping you can answer. After using Denoise, my photo does not show back up in LR until I I synchronize the folder. When I do that, it shows 1 image needs to be added and it does so. When I use Sharpen AI, I do not have to do that step. It automatically reappears in LR without synchronizing. Bot DN and SAI are set to place the image back in the same folder as original. Any ideas what I may have set incorrectly to cause the extra required step in DN?

Denoise AI is GREAT! BUT ... I find the results from Sharpen AI are almost always artificial looking and not something I want in my images. Creating artificial-looking edges/details in a photo does not make it sharp or in focus. But that's just me 🙂

I have tried to set Low Light as my standard AI Model but it seems not to save it as my standard for the next time I use it in Photoshop (plugin). Is there a way to set it as such on a permanent base.

Hi Dave: Another great video. Have you considered processing the butterfly image via DXO PureRAW2 to see how that application would deal with the image. Cheers, Keith

Good question Keith. I have and it is the same as DeNoise. It can’t bring focus back to the butterfly.

I work with film scans a lot and I struggle with where to stop and still stay connected to the analog capture- when the film grain is sharp or go further and tweak any motion blur for example? Also don’t want to wipe out any character from film grain with too much noise reduction. Still experimenting but taking these digital tools to film scans sometimes leave me scratching my head.

Thanks for some clear understanding of the two programs. I am studying Denoise AI for purchase for my night photography noise. Will use this video to make my choice and maybe needing sharpness too. Thanks John from Oregon

Hi, Mr. Kelly. You cleared up totally on how to deal with noise and focus issues in a pretty esasy workflow. Thank you so much.

As always, I admire your ability to communicate knowledge in a simple and understandable way. In addition, you have perfectly grasped what and for what you use. I believe that your work helps self-taught people like me a lot and for that I thank you as always. By the way, I also solve my problem, because so far I have been working on Windows and I have a bite whether it would be appropriate to switch to Apple computers. As usual, greetings from Poland from the city of "Twierdza Przemyśl", I have now taken a break from shooting in the IR and returned to Makro with the spring.

Your results speak for themselves although I’m not sure that I care how the image looks when blown up to greater than 100%

I quite often get better results if I initially ignore the Sharpen AI and use motion first. (Nature, sometimes telephoto, normally hand held.) I have yet to see a bird or a flower on a tripod.
I’ve learned a lot from you. Thank you.

In the email reply to me was this question: Is The Sharpening in TOPAZ DENOISE AI Good Enough? | The Joy of Editing with Dave Kelly. I suspect that Topaz will want to improve the product to get closer to perfection :) I can improve it now with Motion first. And I do my photography mostly to satisfy myself. :) Maybe you will try it and be converted. :)

Great video Dave, a great comparison and clear explanation. But the sharpening of the butterfly clearly shows one of the issues I have with Sharpen AI (and advanced machine learning / AI tools in general). First though, it's important to clarify what I mean by machine learning / AI and how it differs from the wonderful - bordering on magical - tools we already had at our disposal. ML and AI is the process of using a vast library of images to allow a machine to recognise patterns and then apply knowledge about these patterns.
My understanding is that in the case of Sharpen AI, the reason you've uncovered so much detail in the butterfly wings is not because the app could find that detail in the information you captured, but that it found it in images *similar* to yours and used that information to fill in the gaps.
It poses a fundamental question of whether that final image is actually a photo you captured or not. I believe some photography competitions have started preventing the use of AI or ML tools, though it will be interesting to see how these are actually defined. If a mask is applied by recognising the subject via ML/AI prior to some custom adaptations to that subject in isolation, is that AI or ML? Personally I'd probably say no, because it's still your image. The critical part is when information is added to the image which wasn't originally captured, and I think this is both where Topaz AI tools get their power.
Whether the average Joe will (or even should) care is another question, but it's probably something the photographer should be conscious of when using these tools, and I'm not sure many are.

Your comment about linear profile is not clear (to me) please explain. So there are times when I should not use linear profiles?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 года назад

No I use Linear Profiles mostly all of the time. But when I use DeNoise Ai or Sharpen Ai and Process my images as RAW files with these pieces of software I am unable to use Linear Profiles. In other words, they are no longer available as an option in Lightroom.
