Stone Gossard and I Teach You How To Play A Song (and have a really good time!)

- Welcome one and all to the grand finale of Stone Week 2023! I'm SO excited and honored to share this conversation between Stone and me as we teach you, in tandem, to play the beautiful song Ten Years From Now from Painted Shield's first record. If you know anything about me, you know that Stone Gossard is the reason I picked up a guitar, and anything I say about what a good time this was and what a pleasure it is to know him wouldn't hold a candle to what it means to me. Therefore I won't even try. But I will express that I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed making it :) :)

I’m still amazed that you can call Stone a friend now. Could you ever have imagined this happening when you started your channel? And kudos to Stone for upping his video quality game since the last time 😂
not in a thousand lifetimes Jason.
Stone comes across as very down to earth person.
This Stone guy is gonna be HUGE because of Ryan!
If he keeps at it.
😀
teehee
Man…. What a legend. That other guy was cool too
hehe
That was so cool, man. I've had the pleasure of meeting him in passing and he's just like he was on this video: nice, down to earth, humble. I'm sure those that come in contact with him that don't know who he is think "what a nice guy". It's funny that you brought up the saying "never meet your heros" because sometimes it's true. I had one in particular just be the biggest douche. There's a saying-Money doesn't change you, it reveals you. And Stone seems to epitomize that in the best of ways. Despite the massive career success, writing some of rock's best known songs (just take a moment to imagine doing that!), playing to millions of adoring fans, touring the world many times over, and being inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame, the revelation is he's a normal, cool, talented as all hell guy. Now, not only have you taught us how to play nearly every Pearl Jam song ever written (some of which I would've never been able to figure out on my own), you've also given us a small glimpse into what it's like to have the guy that was the impetus for you to pick up the guitar become a friend. Thank you for it all. As Stone said, the hours you've spent just on the PJ songs are countless. We all love you for doing it and I'm sure I speak for many when I say that we're anxiously awaiting the first "Lendt Trap" single. Thanks for everything, Ryan!
hehehe thanks for knowing about the lendt trap - and it's one of my favorite ideas, money doesn't change you, it just magnifies your traits, whatever they may be. Stone Gossard is a 5 star gent.
@@RyanLendt Well, I would suggest that applies to both of you. While I have your attention, I wonder if I could trouble you with a question. I have searched and searched, and then searched a bit more trying to find out a certain effect Mike uses. He uses it quite a bit live, during solos. But he's also used it on the occasional PJ song. One that comes to mind is "1/2 Full". He doesn't use it the whole time. He kicks it on during the 2nd solo (not the one the song begins with). To me, it sounds like a rotovibe, univibe...some type of modulation effect. But when I've tried using these effects, I don't get the same sound. Any idea what effect this might be?
OMG it’s happening!!!!❤
This is what makes RUclips magic.
I could not possibly love this video more! ❤❤❤ Stone just seems like such a cool, “regular” guy (who just happens to be brilliant). So fun!!
thanks for hanging out J! :)
LET STONE SING!
if its just inadvertent imitation a pattern in all mankind
That is so cool. Your massive fanship has become a real friendship. I'm so happy for you. I've learned like 30 grunge songs from you over your youtube career and its' amazing how accurate you are and even the real pro's notice you. So cool. What a great journey you have taken us on and thanks for all the great content.
appreciate you David!
WOW! Love that Stone and you are pals! Very jelly!
As happy as I am that you are here on the internet doing all this stuff for us, i am just as happy that you get to have an experience like this yourself.
cheers to you Kane :)
What a nice couple of friends! 😉👌
:)
'Chromatic, I don't even know what that means' - Stone Gossard. I'm going to put that on a t-shirt.
This is awesome. You’re a great teacher, and you’ve done a better job of teaching Stone’s guitar parts than anyone.
cheers to you fellow ryan.
Stone is a legend no doubt, and definitely a deserved craziest friend, but seeing you talking to your hero whilst hugging Elizabeth that you’ve taught so many on was a kinda full circle moment and really cool to watch mate.
i'll add the reason i bought elizabeth 20 years ago is because Stone plays Taylors :)
it's totally effin unbelievable, you go online and you post videos of songs and then one day you are craziest friends club with stone gossard in it - i'm speechless. Ryan, you're a total badass legend! (Stone's fingers and the way his face and body twists when he plays is something so odd that his chord and note choices now make more sense - he is just a super nice but essentially an odd guitar player in one of the greatest bands ever, my level of appreciation for what he does just grew by 1000%...)
quite a bananas set of events indeed, to understate drastically!
Congrats on connecting with Stone! You're right, Euphoria Morning was perfect. That album went unnoticed because everyone was grieving Soundgarden. It should be rereleased. It's a gift. Grateful I got to see that tour.
oh damn what a tour to see!
My friends' friends are my friends, and so Stone Gossard and I are friends, those are the rules!
Don't meet your heroes, unless they play in Pearl Jam. Still can't, after all these years, fathom how great, big hearted human beings they all are.
So happy this has happened to you, and thank you for making us all feel a part of it!
Will see you in the Field :)
those are the rules, along with "if they lie you don't have to do it" and "if they say please you have to do it".
thanks for being here Canoe guy
This is f-ing amazing on many levels!!
:) :)
Incredible video! ❤
Awesome!
thanks james!
This is about the best things get!
in my wildest dreams...
This is a really awesome video. Loved this week.
thanks for playing along Brady :)
What fun. Thanks!
cheers!
This is simply amazing, Ryan... Thx so much! 🍻🤘💯
thanks doc :)
Absolutely awesome! The legend !
:)
You have no idea how proud I am of you, Ryan!!
aw thanks Raff!
@@RyanLendt My pleasure. From being an awesome guitar teacher to taking my requests (I still watch the Falling Down video even tho I know how to play it) to teaching me the theory behind it and now seeing Stone himself refer to your videos. Shit, Im crying again.
Oh man! So awesome. Congratulations.
thank you!
This is so awesome
thanks friend.
Awesome Ryan. I love your channel. Well done to you for the hard work you have put in to your channel, recognized by being personally acknowledged by your and many other people’s hero, Stone. Stone is such a down to earth and cool guy too. Thanks Stone for inviting us into your home.
thanks for that Peter :)
Thank you for the content man, amazing lessons, by two amazing individuals, nothing but ❤️ & ✊ Ryan, From North Western Ontario Canada 🇨🇦

Awesome Ryan! I've been gone for awhile and I open up to you and Stone. Boss!

glad you liked it sir :)
This is so fcuking cool. I don't know how you managed to maintain your composure. I would have been giggling like school kid
So happy for you man, you are a legend
aw cheers to you Leo
Nice one Ryan, top man Stone!!
cheers JT!
congrats! you truly deserve this. long time follower
i know your name well Bruno - thank you
Cool!
thanks!
Ryan this is so cool!! You and Stone together, teaching guitar?! You must still be beside yourself. Thank you for all the lessons.
thanks for being on the other end finger :) :)
So awesome Ryan!
thanks heavy!
Awesome, Stone is the man and my favorite guitarist ever.
That was awesome, Sir! 👍
thank you sir!
I got to meet Stone for like the third time over the years. It was at the Brad record signing at Easy Street...but this time I got a couple minutes to chat. He was genuine in our conversation and very talkative. I appreciate musicians like that.
That was a blast! Good for you, Ryan!
cheers Adam!
Damn Ryan...wow. Loved every sec of this. Great job.
thanks Brook :)
Hey, look at you!! I chose your videos because you were to me a nice and funny guy that explained songs in a really understandable and easy way and look where you are now! congratulations, the future looks bright to you, well deserved!
I loved that Ryan. Great video and such a gentleman. I can associate with the reasons for wanting to be able to play. Although for me it was Mike Mcready that had me finally pick up a guitar at 40 but it was you that helped me achieve it. Thank you Ryan and another great video.
we all have our own el guapo. in this case it's the real el guapo!
Master of minjors, he's pulling his strings... It was a pleasure to watch it, it was funny to see Stone listening to the explanation of his own music. :) I'm happy for you, Ryan, hats off to you! Ceterum censeo, the world needs a Brittany Davis-Mike McCready guitar battle and I keep virtually yelling this everywhere until Stone reads it!
yell at the top of your lungs schober!
I started playing in1970 and sometimes enthusiasm dips doesn't it?! Then by about 1990 with a young family I sold my amp and two guitars...needed money ! Then one night I saw The late show on BBC and there was Pearl jam blasting away in a tiny studio- doing Alive... Marshalls shaking...so Stone Gossard was the guy who got me playing again ! Then this last summer saw PJ at Hyde Park ! Huge respect to both of you for doing this ! Xx
flipping channels and happening upon PJ always kept me coming back to the guitar too Mark - always felt super magical in the times when you couldn't pull up anything you want at any moment - thanks for sharing!
I know a guy who knows Stone. Therefore, I know Stone. That's my logic!
I approve :) Anita LANGLEY - artwork - texas. I remember :)
And you have a great memory. 👍
Dude what a great friend to have…. 🤙
a true gentleman and scholar.
Yes! So f@$&ing awesome brotha!
thanks broski!
EPIC!
Ryan, thanks so much for all you do. I’m so happy that you got to speak with Stone and I think it’s awesome that he relearns his songs from you. I wanted to ask your advice on a Les Paul. Ive played a few Pearl Jam tribute nights over the past couple years covering stones parts. I’ve used an Epiphone es335 and strat. I’m looking to get closer to stones guitar tone. What model les Paul would you recommend and also if you know what pickups he uses? I’m thinking about getting a epiphone version and just upgrading it but since you have taught me all the songs I wanted your opinion. lol thanks again for everything.
THANK YOU RYAN. THANK YOU STONE. Awesome.
thank you Ross!
This is so incredible. Stone is such a lovely decent guy ❤
i'll add kindhearted and brilliant!
@@RyanLendt absolutely agree! Such an excellent video my friend :)
Dude, rad!
dude thanks!
Sick!
thanks!
Ryan, I just stumbled across this. I’m so happy for you that these guys took notice of your channel. We’re all such big fans of Pearl Jam minutes great just to see them reach out.
thanks Brian! as if we needed another reason to like pearl jam.. :)
@@RyanLendt totally, saw quicksand in Phill last week I miss philly,,, thanks as always
Wow, I turn away for a minute and you’re doing a show with Stone Gossard. This is epic.
cheers tomas.
Hah holy shit dude I literally just tweeted out to PJ asking them to raise your profile, having no idea you had recorded this. So freaking cool man!
aw amazing thanks for thinking of me Kee
Reunion of GOATS
baaaaaaaaaaa
Stone is awesome. He’s very humble and self-deprecating about his musical ability, but he’s such a talent and a great songwriter. Of the Girl is an absolute gem of a song. There’s a great clip of Mike McCready talking about writing Given to Fly and feeling stuck on how to bridge a couple parts together in the song. Mike says he called Stone, played the two parts over the phone, and Stone came up with the bridge in about 15 minutes. PJ has lasted this long because the guys support each other and want to help each other succeed musically. Stone is the embodiment of the PJ ethos.
🙏 🎸 🎸 🎸
I build 3 string cigar box guitars (and do my best to adapt playing Pearl Jam tunes on them...I'm working on Corduroy and Wishlist, The Fixer is on my list) and my dying wish is to make one for Stone, Mike and Eddie and somehow get them to them... I need no public acknowledgement, just to know that they actually received them would be good enough for me!!!
Maybe someday...
2 legends
Louise!
Nice man…I can’t wait for the new Brad release in July
so special!
Finally
It might be consistent, but when you can make it sound total unrelated takes talent and hard work. Can’t forget the hard work.
Stone. The best most underrated under the radar guitar god
Please explain how Stone Gossard is underrated?
@@jeff7764 I think it's because absolutely everything is now underrated.
in my house stone's rating is on the very last notch of fully rated
I love stone. He’s so goofy
amen.
Hey Ryan, we haven't chatted for a while!, Wow! It's amazing to see you guys chatting here, you look well my friend.
So, I'm currently recording songs for new project, in the studio most days recording bobs n bits, will keep you updated.
Love your vids as you know! Hope this message finds you and yours hunky dory!?
Was conversing with Dave Abbruzzese for a brief while several years ago, we became friends of Facebook after he had discovered one of my tracks, and posted it with some kind words, for others you hear.
Good stuff! I'm always curious how much "music theory" people like Stone know. I've heard some say they don't know music and it's all just "feel", and they have to hire instructors for their kids to learn guitar. He seemed to know what a 7th was but wasn't sure when you mentioned chromatic. 🤷♂
AARP!! Stone is the best
his timing on that was impeccable.
wow this is so cool! thank you teacher🙏 stone gossard wow .. i was in your concert in manila..thank you thank you🙏 wow
pearl jam in manila 95
stone you threw your baseball cap to the crowd when u went on the stage during your concert in manila
i think we can assume it wasn't that baseball cap then hehe!
I love that none of us Guitarist no what the fuck we are doing and then there are people like you that do and tell us! That must have been a great feeling to sit with him!?
Ryan! You’re friends with Stone Gossard! What?? Secondly, I love how he acts like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Lol. Can you believe he’s cool enough to let you tell him about the key of C? That made my day man.
❤🤘🤘🤘🤘
:)
We need Stone to show us what Cornell songs he's learnt ❤
Wooow!!! I heard daily NO CODE since 1996.
good choice!
I was at all three Painted Shield shows in Seattle… :flex:
two of three from 2,785 miles away. Flex back - too bad we didn't run into each other!
@@RyanLendt I only flew 2000 miles but I did also catch Jeff with Richard Stuverud at Easy Street covering “Why Can’t I Touch It”…
Would’ve loved to shake you hand and tell you that while I love your vids they are clearly meant for higher level guitarist than me armed with my Mexican Tele. Working towards being able to understand them better… just don’t have the chops/shorthand to keep up with “oh this is this and this is this…”
I need the tabs and the slow play through a bit more for my level of understanding/learning style.
Really apprec your efforts despite my learning difficulties. Very cool that you and Stone are so simpatico. Very cool vid. Wish you continued success and I wish Stone’s other band were playing more than nine shows this tour.
Alas, I’ll still attend them all.
Hey Ryan thanks for the vids…if I may I’d like to make a request for a tutorial for the song “The Only Way” by Brad…thanks
beautiful.
I think Stone achieved what Kurt would have love to be: to be a regular guy who plays amazing music with an amazing and legendarious band.
Amaze-ballz
Happy Mothers Day!!!
you're right, ear-ballz should be spelled with a z
@@RyanLendt Obviously
😊My maaan, Ryguy🙏🏻
:)
Off topic but is that a Jeff Ament artwork behind Stone?
Ok I dig it! GREAT! but WHAT SONG IT?
How much do your teaching rates go up now after this?
hehe
Oh how I envy you
SPETTACOLO
grazi!
No way!!!!
i'll stop trying to make a difference no way
Hey Ryan , next time you chat with Stone , tell him about the impact he’s made in my life , I don’t even have words to describe it … and I’ve always wanted to know what arpeggio he plays in ‘ Alive ‘ Pink Pop 1992 right when Eddie sings ‘ while you were sitting home alone ‘ in the video , it’s right at the 1:06 mark
ask me about that next time you catch me on a stream Jake - I'm sure i can figure that out for you
@@RyanLendt Thank You , it means a lot
I would say you are a lucky SOB, but it's no luck, you deserve ti.
next stop fallin'!
How cool is this?
