Hi. Good to see you found a solution. The actual reason for it not working us because IR is absorbed by black. This causes no reflection back. A suggestion is to place whiteout or or white paint.
Nice demonstration. The foil tape looks like the answer, but the engine is already in the street before the signals are energized by the gas tank. Maybe putting the foil tape at the front and back of the diesel so that the sensor reacts once the couplers cross and the signals will go on prior to being in the street. Just a thought.
You are right but, that sensor which you saw me try it, is the middle one. There are two sets of sensors too. The other two are about 25 inches before this one on each side of it, lets say one on the right and one set on the left. The middle one is to just keep the signal going so it won't turn off before the loco gets to it. So, in total there are three sets of sensors. The signal light is on before the loco gets to the middle sensor and the street.
