ALSO, I've no idea who drew the Shinx in my thumbnail, but I'd love to give credit - so if this is your artwork, please let me know!

Great guide, but here's a couple of things I'd suggest adding based on some observations I've made hunting with the Pokeradar for a while:
    - Super Repels are much, much better than Max Repels. They have less steps individually, but you get more steps for your money when you buy them in bulk.
    - The type of grass you enter will generally indicate what rarity of Pokemon you will find. If you're looking for a Pokemon that's rarer in the area (Gastly in Eterna Forest, for example) the fast-shaking patches are better because they have a higher chance of having Pokemon with a lower encounter rate. If you're looking for a Pokemon that's more common in the area, you're more likely to find it in the slow-shaking normal patches.
    - If your patches are really spread out or really, really close together, there's a higher chance to break your chain even if you have a patch that seems like it'd be good. It's safer to reset your patches if your patches are clumped up or spread out, especially if you're already far into your chain.
    - You should avoid entering patches that are directly next to other patches, even if one of them is four steps away. These have an increased chance of breaking your chain as well.
    - Patches that border NPCs or items that haven't been picked up yet also increase the chance of breaking your chain.
    - You should always research the Pokemon you're hunting to make sure you have everything you need before you start hunting. Nothing is worse than finally getting a patch with a shiny Houndour only to find you don't have a Pokemon with Soundproof or Taunt and it to uses Roar and breaks your chain. This also goes for having a Ghost Pokemon for things with Takedown or the Damp ability for things with Explosion or Selfdestruct.

I just started this whole Thing and i have a Problem: when i Start a chain and after a while no tile is favorable. - i press the Radar again from the Center of the Patch to have greater Chances of a propper tile BUT if i Do that more than one time in a row, meaning i press the poke Radar more than one Consecutive time without fighting a chain pokemon in between, it seems to break the chain. - is that true or am i just unlucky?

This is a really good guide. For any new chainers, super repels are actually more cost effective than max repels (the extra 200 only buys you 50 more repelled steps making supers way better)

    • @ThrE3-GeS

Yes but it‘s annoying cuz you need to put them on more often and you need to be concentraded and focused during shiny chaining. It’s allready annoying with max. repels cuz you need to recharge your pokeradar constantly with stepps. I don’t recommend doing that while doing this but for regular gameplay this tipp can be usefull.

@Oshie this was a really good tutorial. I've been radar chaining for a while. My first was a shiny Snubull from a Swarm in Pokemon Diamond. I have gotten a few Starly, Eevee, Ponyta and a Shinx from radar chaining on 4th Gen. For some reason, I have a really hard time keeping my chain now that I'm getting back into it. The fact that you get a 10% boost after catching a Pokemon is SUPER helpful. Gonna try that next time I chain. Shiny Tyrogue, I'm coming for ya!!

After getting into shiny hunting in Gen 7 with SOS and being disappointed by Gen 8 methods, I've decided to revisit some of my older games, and this guide has been INCREDIBLY helpful, you go over a lot of stuff I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere. Earlier I did some attempts, but never got further than 6 or 7 chain - think now I'm much better equipped to try again. My first target is actually sentret, which I'm aware is on the rare side, but shiny furret is an all time fav, and I actually want to transfer it over for my next HeartGold run (since that game has no cool methods to use)

Well, you explained how the radar works, and the needed items/how to use them :)
      And I have a question:
I really want to catch specific pokemon in "in shiny form", but the only place where I can catch these pokemon is where the pokemon are a very high level; 25+. This makes it very hard to catch them, and I don't have a pokemon with false swipe, or the TM to teach the move to a pokemon, but I want to increase the chance of keeping my chain. Do you know anything that helps when i'm trying to catch a high level pokemon without Attacking it?

Actually I’ve tried a few different things and can hopefully dispel a few myths. 1: you can actually step out of your grass field without breaking the chain, you just can’t have your closest shaking patch go offscreen. 2 in a pinch, you can close your DS into sleep mode In either then menu or the over world. As long as you still hear the music, your chain is not broken. Trust me, I tried this a number of times to make darn sure.

I’ve watched a lot of different videos about radar hunting but this video was the best one I’ve seen? For some reason other videos confused me about what I can and can’t do but dang Oshie, I finally get it. Thanks man

I love the pokeradar! I've gotten 3 of the same species for Ponyta, Shinx, and Starly! It's extremely annoying though, when the forced 12% makes me break a chain at 25 or higher. I'm gonna go after Chansey next! Lucky eggs and shinies are awesome. Together, they'll be the perfect hunt.

I know I'm super late, but I wanna say thank you for this guide. I've been trying to chain successfully for years and only after watching this video did I get a chain of 40 not only for the first time, but on the first try. Unfortunately, something made my game freeze so i didn't get the shiny patch nor the shiny, but it happened none the less. Thanks again!

Michael white no. The poke radar only exists in diamond, pearl and platinum. Believe me, I think Game Freak messed up royally not adding the pokeradar to HG/SS. 😢

I don't remember anyone stating the percentage chance of breaking a chain based on how far it is from you, much less catching the pokemon making it more likely to not break the chain, or even bringing up that hunting in a place with a higher rate of encountering the pokemon you want would be better so you don't break your chain as often by running into the wrong patch. Thanks!
