Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno (Monumental cemetery) was designed by the famous Genovese architect Carlo Barabino in a Neo-Classical style, the Staglieno Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno) opened in 1851. A compromise between the formality of the traditional orderly camposanto layout and the newly fashionable wilderness style of boschetto irregulare, seen in Père Lachaise in Paris, the grounds included cloisters, garden paths, and a reproduction of the famous Pantheon in Rome. The new cemetery quickly became the fashionable death option, and increasingly was a showcase for world-class sculpture.

I did Highgate with my Mum on 12th of Sept.I thought of you whilst I was there.Unfortunately the west cemetery was closed so no circle of Lebanon for me but having said that I did spend the night in the west part some years ago and at the stroke of midnight I was in the circle of Lebanon.Completely peaceful so it was and still.

The sculptures need a hose to them. Some water to clean them off and a good scrubbing. Then people can see the realistic beauty of the master's who sculpted them looking like reality!
Hi.. I had a chance to view these statues up close, a hose (and water) will not clean them up, they need to be cleaned carefully since dust has been glued to them and penetrated the upper layers of the marble..
@@VicStefanu Vic, you are right. Hosing them down might destroy and break them. But they need to be restored to their glory they once had before the pollution in the air got to them. They are like a beautiful oil painting or fresco, they need some people who love them to come clean them. If not the embedded dirt will destroy them forever. Permission should be a given because the original families are long dead and gone. The people responsible for the upkeep of the cemetery should take responsibility. If Italy salvages fresco's of long dead artist, then why not these magnificent artists marble images and likeness of the person who died and their families. It saddens me to view them with so much filth on them. I will always remember them the way they were meant to be scene, white pure marble. This cemetery is a national treasure. Should not go to waste.

What is the saddest for me to see AGAIN, is that these beautiful sculptures are not cleaned. The dirt of time is still on them. Back in 1965, when I was there, they were clean, no dust no dirt. 50 years past now, and they are filthy! This is what make me so sad when I visit Staglieno, one of Italy's finest and grandest cemeteries in the world! Why can't the care takers of the cemetery clean these up. Most of the families of those entombed are dead themselves and cannot clean their tombs. My cousin is buried there, and her tomb is being taken care of by her son and grandchildren. But most of the families who were buried there some 80 to 100 years ago are dead and gone. I hope they clean them up, they look beautiful but the filth is to much for me.
Thank you for your comments. When I was there, workers were cleaning one beautiful white marble statue and I spoke to them. They explained that in most cases, the marble is covered with dust that has been glued to the surface, thus making it difficult to remove it and this is why it is a laborious process and an expensive one.. now, since most of these beautiful monuments cover tombs of people that have no relatives anymore, nobody wants to paint for this expensive cleaning process..
Vic I truly enjoy ALL your videos but it breaks my heart that these priceless works of art are so filthy, covered in soot and mold and pitted and stained by pollution. Is there any public or private organization tasked with preserving all this irreplaceable beauty? With much love and admiration, J.
I know what you mean.. most of the priceless marble statues are covered in thick dust that has been glued on them... the descendants of the deceased have disappeared (or, do not exist, or, no one knows who they are) and as a result these monuments look neglected and abandoned.. the city of Genoa, of course, does not have the funds to clean them all up - when I was there, they were cleaning one and the cost was running into thousands of Euros, imagine having to clean 4-5 thousand of them?

Civic organizations 'adopt' streteches of road, monuments, etc. Our attitude is, it belongs to us, we should take care of it.' In fact, if every Catholic church in America adopts one monument, every church in Italy, adopts a monument...i cannot believe such beauty could disappear from the world. At least heroes like you preserve what you can on film But why oh why is this not a World Heritage Site? Like the Taj Mahal etc.?

Cuando estuve allí, la estatua estaba cubierta con una tela gruesa y especialistas la estaban limpiando del polvo que la había cubierto a lo largo de los años.
Precioso video, y precioso arte funerario.Lo que no entiendo es es la falta de mantenimiento en limpieza para que todo ese arte luciese en su maximo explendor, es un legado que el gobierno italiano deberia proteger.

These monuments and statues you see here, were definitely afforded by the wealthy and the upper class...
Why don't they clean them, it would more spectacular to see them in the snow white of the marble. The dirty gray just doesn't do them justice.
True.. However, the dust has settled on the statues and has penetrated the upper layers of the marble, it is now a very expensive process to clean them..

7 employees of the Staglieno cemetery, including three communal inspectors, were arrested by the carabinieri for systematic looting and desecration of graves.
