According to Corny, when he, The Express and Horner were all still in WCW, Horner came up to him and told him he had a guy on the line to kick some cash towards an independent wrestling territory. None of them were happy, they were all looking for a door. Horner's backer had "just enough money to piss people off" is how Jim put it. Jim didn't want Horner to start up what he probably couldn't see through so he offered Horner a spot. Figured him into the office, out him in charge of merch, the ring truck and clerical work. From what I heard about the wrestling school was all he ever taught people was how to write a check.

1:29 - No, Horner wasn't trying to start a rival promotion to run opposite SMW. As Cornette tells it, at the same time Corny was planning to start Smoky Mountain, Horner had found a guy to put up $40K for Horner to start his own promotion in Knoxville only, which, Knoxville was a big part of Cornette's planned territory of SMW. So, concerned that Horner's idea with only a 40k start-up would muddy the waters and screw-up his bigger plans for Knoxville, Cornette decided to let Horner in on his SMW plans with the agreement that Horner would be "figured in" with the company as being featured as a hometown babyface (Horner lived in nearby Morristown) and a position in the office. Tim did promote an event on 7/22/94 in Johnson City, TN. It was called Tim Horner's National Championship Wrestling that drew 200 people.

Well at $20 a ticket that's $2,000 in one night better than most jobs in Johnson city except Dr but they may not even make that much in a day

The way KC was talking about Tim was a nice way of saying Tim thought more of himself and thought he could help more than he did. He was a nice guy, but might not have been the brightest person alive.

I’m from Morristown Tennessee. I’ve met Tim Horner. He’s a class act and awesome in our community. I remember seeing SMW at our local Highschool. Jim Cornett lived in the neighborhood just over from me.

Here’s the long and short of it all. Whether you like him or not, Jim Knows his shit when it comes to the wrestling business. He’s been successful in every promotion he’s ever been in and that’s counting SMW. He gave Tim Horner, who at best is second third match and that’s when he was teamed with Brad Armstrong. Jimmy wanted to help him out and of course his wife started jawing at Tim to stop letting everybody take advantage of him. We all know what happens when that happens. Never ends well. Men should handle men problems and that includes handling their mouthpiece wives. Put a muzzle on that bulldog or put her on the road.
